Got the first colour of grey on my build yesterday but all I had in light compass grey were enamels so the kit is in the airing cupboard drying until tomorrow. hopefully it'll be a quick bit of masking and then onto the topside grey this weekend.
I'll upload some pics in he morning
Well I didn't say which morning
More progress has been made since then and I have finished decalling here's all the progress photos to date
The masking and painting
And the decals, I have to say the Fightertown decals are really good. I hate no step decals at the best of times but 144 scale just takes the biscuit.
(Macro really shows some flaws)
I do like that the names are readable even in this scale. Next will be a coat of Klear and then onto the weathering

So, I realize it is not early in the game, but I have too much spare time before and after work. So, I am building the 1/72 Hase F-14A Low Vis kit. I want to get some practice in on naval weathering, and have enjoyed seeing many of the other builds on here. I'll post pics, but as of this morning I simply have the cockpit painted.

Allen, that makes two of us.
If just one little "no step" decal is out of line by a fraction the eye catches it immediately.
Incredible how unforgiving close up photos are. That is a nasty gap behind the cockpit.
Nice progress, Michael. Very neat preshading. Looking forward to see more.
I hope to progress my Tomcat a little over the weekend.

I noticed that as well when I posted it but I'm hoping the oil wash will hide it

To compensate for the increased hours at work, I have increased the coffee consumption, and resorted to waking up earlier yet to work in the cave! Must Have Therapy Time!!! Anyway, I built up the shades of grey on the kit, and after looking at other builds on here, as well as google searching pics, I really like the dirty birdy look. I lightened the top shade with some flat white, and went over some spots, and used some heavily thinned Tamiya greys as well. I masked off the engines, and painted those, and finally got the gear doors on and assembled. So this cat is finally standing on her own legs.

Nice progress, Flyboy. Very nice lightening of the panels. Sounds like you are running a tight shift with work and modelling.
I have made a little more progress on my Monogram Tomcat. Basic construction is now finished.
A lot of problem areas with this kit. A lot of things did not line up properly - maybe because I was not careful enough. I have more monogram Tomcats in my stash so I will hopefully do better on the next ones knowing where the problem areas are.

Hi Tim I noticed that you filled the gaps in but what would be best is to fill the entire area over with some filler. These are actually air bag that inflate and deflate to keep the wing fold area sealed hopefully the following pictures from the book uncovering the Grumman F-14 A/B/D Tomcat by Danny Coremans (which I would highly recommend to any Tomcat Fan) will help to show what I mean.
Well I reworked the areas where the inflatable seals for the wings are situated, using the images that Allen supplied. The majority of the fill is laminated plastic card and a fair bit of filler. Looks a lot better. Thanks for the suggestion Allen.
I applied some paint to the airframe and done some very light weathering. I was waiting for some resin seats from Quickboost, but impatience got the better of me so I painted it without the canopy. As luck would have it the seats turned up in the post after I applied the paint. Very good looking seats though.
All the best

I use both and primarily MM,if it's drying up try thinning more and Val.already comes pre mixed all you have to do is spray I use these in the cock pit area as they don't tend to hold up well to masking or really get a good grip on the plastic.just my 2cents.great build sir and thank you for taking part in my campaign

Thanks Justin, so the Vallejo would be comparable to the MM paints in terms of sub par adhesion to the plastic? That stinks. Well, lets hope that Tamiya hurrys up and starts shipping paint back here.

I generally use mm paints on the out side because I havnt had any lifting problems with it yet.I can mask over it with no problems

I don't have a problem as long as I prime, but I never really did except for my last couple builds. As long as I prime first, it is good. But if I do not prime, it gets ugly. Have you tried the life color acrylics yet?

Great build, Michael. The finish is great. Well done!
I have made a little more progress on my Monogram F-14. I have decided to go for a relatively weathered look although I do not have the courage to go all in and make it a completely bashed up and partly redone colour scheme.
I have used an overall grey and then brush painted slightly thinned grey along some lines and details on the wings and fuselage using pictures of real life aircraft as a guide.
After that some Tamiya smoke in different areas and along some details and especially around the engines.
Next is a coat of clear varnish and then the decals.
More to follow.

Thanks Jesper! I really like that panel shading on yours! I still need to practice that technique a bit more, and have not mastered the completely stable hand . I'll do the preshade because that gets covered, but fear the post paint lines! So, Kudos to you!
