I am on for this - maybe with a Me 262. I assume that will qualify as both pioneering and record breaking.
The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft.
Speed record holder? doubts have been raised in the past
about the speed atained.

Here's my entry for this campaign with friends. Fastest return journey between England and Australia in 1934. Came 4th in the MacRobertson Air Race but was loaded with film and immediately returned to England. Grosvenor House (the red one) won the event. I've always wanted all three and at last Airfix have done it. Kit is not good, although I noticed that Black Magic was quite a bit better than Grosvenor House when I built her about three years later. How about a 1/48th one Airfix with decals for all 5 of the examples built.

The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft.
Well if you're dividing rabbits, No. 616 squadron was declared operational on Meteors 6 months before the first official Me 262 Gruppe, but the Schwable does hold the record for getting into combat first. The aircraft involved were part of a test wing though, not a true operational fighter unit. It wasn't until January 1945 that JG 7 was officially stood up.
Here ends my pointless trivia. You may now return to your modelling
But of course, now I've established that the Meatbox F.1 is also eligible for this build.

I've already got the Voyager and Global Express earmarked for this one. I think that I'll leave it to someone else to do a Meatbox.
Besides, mine is going to be wearing Yank markings[1], which rather takes it out of the running to be a 616 Sqn bird.
[1] Yes, a Meteor 1 was loaned to the USAAF for testing and evaluation. It wore standard RAF Day Fighter camouflage and USAAF national markings. I plan to display mine alongside my RAF Airacomet.

Well, it's now settled - I'll go with Bell XS-1 in 1/72 from Tamiya. Still hope to find the Eduard one in 1/48. Do have any clue if it's their own model or a re-box with upgrade parts?
As for the 1/72 offer - I'll need 2 more... Just saw that the white one is with Natural metal wings, crying for some Alclad...

There are versions of the prototypes 262 in 1/72 and there were a few in 1/48. As for operational service Kommando Nowotny sept 25/44. Erprobungskommando 262 in July. As for what I am going to build is up to grabs, still tossing around options.

howdy,
Would an F-104 Starfighter work for this campaign. One of my books says the Starfighter was the first aircraft to hold simultaneous official world records for speed, altitude and time-to-climb.
I also read it was the first aircraft to fly at twice the speed of sound.
or does it have to be the exact model and markings as the actual record breaker?
I'm a bit unclear on this part.
but maybe its just me

Hi Trevor
Looking forward to seeing your choice.
Hi Delbert
F-104 will be fine,it would be a bonus for us to see F-104 in decals of the actual record breaker.

I'm still undecided what to go with but I am edging closer to the Matchbox Vickers Wellesley. I believe it held the record for longest ranged bomber until broken by the B-29, but I'll have to confirm that before I make a decision. I think it was also the first production aeroplane to be built using Barnes Wallis's geodetic framework (not sure if that qualifies for the campaign?). Also have to dig the kit out!
On the bench: 1/72 Mosquito, Lightning F.6, DH.2,
AMT Vulcan Shuttle Surak.
Cyber-Hobby 1:35 Sherman Firefly IC - still stalled.

Great..
Afraid it will be a standard F-104G
I have only done one post WWII Jet so far as I tend to stick to WWII Armor mostly with an occasional aircraft.
I was at a Discout store on Sunday and they happened to have a fresh order of Scale Models from a warehouse buyout.
I picked up a bunch of minicraft one of which is a 1/144 Starfighter, which happens to be my favorite modern era Jet.
And when I saw this campaign I thought it would be perfect.
see you at the starting line

Info I found on the net:-
""The RAF received its first Wellesleys in April 1937, serving with No.76 Squadron at Finningley, and eventually equipped six RAF Bomber Command squadrons in the UK.[2] Five aircraft with provisions for three crew members were modified for long-range work with the RAF Long-Range Development Flight. Additional modifications included the fitting of Pegasus XXII engines and extra fuel tanks.[2] On 5 November 1938, three of them under command of S/L R. Kellett flew non-stop for two days from Ismailia, Egypt to Darwin, Australia (7,162 mi/11,525 km) setting a world distance record. All three aircraft succeeded in breaking the existing record, but No. 2 aircraft landed in West Timor, 500 mi (800 km) short of the final objective. The Wellesley's record remained unbroken until November 1945.[4] To this day, though, this flight remains the longest by a single engined aircraft.
Go for it!

Richard,
Thanks for the welcome, I just spent some time in Wikipedia and found several subjects. The Wright RB-1 looked like a canidate if I can find a kit or if I get really motivated maybe scratch if some plans (3 views) can be found. I am stll looking over my options though.

After some searching I found that [quote] Flying F-104A 56-0762 over NAS Point Mugu, California US Air Force Lt William T. Smith and Lt Einar Enevoldson set several time-to-climb records on 13 and 14 December 1958:[quote] I may try my hand at an F 104A if I can find the markings of this a/c.

Well, the
RCAF's 12700 set a Canadian altitude record of 100 110 ft in 1967 by zoom climbing (it also set a Canadian speed record of mach 2.4 immediately prior to the zoom climb). It was a pretty bog-standard F-104A converted to the CF-104 standard which was externally identical to the early G model the Minicraft kit represents. You can get markings for it from
Canmilair. Bill will print you the correct serial numbers and likely the crests for the nose as well if yo ask. The only non-standard items are the shock cone extensions that were fitted for the record flights (which can easily be seen in the
pictures).
During the record breaking flights the aircraft wore no markings apart from the serial numbers and flag on the tail.

I love the idea and Im in on this. I was going through my stash to see what could be suited for this, but decided not to make any compromises. So after reading an article on the X-1, I decided to buy the Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak in 1/48 from Special Hobby. The Skystreak was a purpose build experimental speed breaker of the US NAVY and NACA. It broke the speed record set by Me 163 Comet and was the first jet plane to get past 1000km/h. It was considered the most serious competition of Bell s X-1. In fact it was more promising since it was a fully independent jet plane, not just a rocket attached to a bomber.
