Tarp turned out awesome

is that just cling wrap that you painted? Please give a little tutorial

thanks,

its actually really easy, i checked out a few tutorials from other people and they all made them straight onto the model which is fine but they don't come off, well not easily.

i covered the model in cling film/sandwich wrap (wrinkles don't matter as they will help when you do the next stage).

cut some kitchen towel to the right size then use a mixture of pva/wood glue mixed with water (50/50) so its nice and runny and wet the kitchen towel while its on the model.

i WOULDN'T brush the wood glue/water mix on as it will tear the kitchen roll, just load a big-ish brush (a scrappy old one is fine) and dab it on and use the brush to carefully make the folds and creases.

WASH YOUR BRUSH OUT WITH WATER !

let the initial mixture dry overnight, i then gave it another coating of just pva/wood glue, full strength, not diluted. if you want to put a couple of coats on that's fine.

once its all totally dry you can lift the tarp. off the model as it doesn't stick to the cling film, then all you need is paint and weathering.

easy !

i can do a tutorial with pictures if you want, its up to you.

Finalized the base. I started out with the Verlinden PSP base, but the scene quickly outgrew that one. Next was the Masterpiece models PSP base, larger size but the detail was just too soft and too uniform. I finally decided on the Just Plane Stuff PSP base. Good size, but when I decided to put a Dodge WC towing a fuel trailer, it was back to square one. So I just expanded the base at the dirt line by 1 3/4" on both dimensions. I used gatorfoam from work for the extensionthere is also a sheet of aluminum that all of this is attached to. Next I did the groundwork using True Earth desert/shore sand colored paste. Don't know what's in it, but it sure looks and works great. Did some experimenting with some sprinkled on fine sand, looks ok I think... well it's back to the groundwork, happy modeling everybody

Does a duck swim?!

Please do a tutorial. Your instructions were very clear and I think I got the idea but I learn best visually. Nothin big or complex necessary, just a demo of how to perform each stage.

Or if you don't have time yourself, then plz provide a link to wherever you learned it from.

Thanks ahead of time Paul

Base is finished and the figures are in their final location. I will primer the base and the completed figures next. 2/3 figures still need to be completed, arms on one, head with hat on another, waist detail on the kneeling ground figure. I will set this aside and continue on the Corsair, the Dodge WC, and the jeep. Here are some updated pics.this figure will be handing over a fuel nozzle to the figure on the wing. Until next time, happy modeling everybody

Wow roland that looks great! Seeing that your figs are aiming the gun i'm just wondering how often this needed to be done on planes of the time.

Thanks Jakob, while doing my research this procedure was done on all freshly delivered planes. There was a standard that the air corps used, but in the field some pilots preferred a wider spray pattern, and others wanted all six guns to converge on the same spot. Also some planes were delivered with no guns installed, the guns were sometimes delivered in separate crates to be inspected and checked by the crew chief prior to installation. They used a boresighter that they installed in the barrel. They could look thru this and adjust for windage/elevation. There was also a unit that was installed under the fuselage to confirm that the plane was level, some kind of level that you can look thru. I will be scratch building this level also. Most likely they wouldn't have been fueling up or working on the engine at the same time, but since I am using the Aires detail set, which is pretty extensive, I decided to use some artistic license to show all these activities going on at the same time. Thanks for looking and I hope your project is going smoothly also

As i see it the plane is just being prepared for a testflight to check if the adjustments were succesful.

This was done on the SAAB Viggen as well. In its original configuration the cannon was so accurate that it fired in the exact same spot every time. This made it very hard for pilots to hit their targets so in the production variants the mounts of the canon was redesigned to decrease accuracy .

I have this Ozmods Caribou kit

which I plan to arrange in a maintenance bay with ladders and trucks and so on, like this,

In exactly these grey/black/white markings.

This picture was taken in Oakland, but Ill be building the Kwajalein Aircraft Maintenance building to complete the scene, Pictures of that later.

JOn

A little off topic but here is a picture for you, when I was a C-17 Loadmaster and flew to Kwaj. It was still a crushed Seashell tarmac. I will dig for some more pics I took a bunch I also have a pic I took just above Wake Island.

Hey Eugene , thanks for that! I have a sort of inventory of aircraft on Kwajalein, this is the first time Ive seen a C-17 there. now i have to add it to the long list of models I need to build.

If anyone's keeping track, I haven't posted any progress pics yet. Reason being the Verlinden detail set for the Tamiya FW-190D SUXXXXX

Have had fitting and technical issues at every step. Thinking will have to start from square one with a spare 190 kit I have and only include the Jumo 213 engine and NOT the gun bays.

Anyone else suffer the misfortune of this Verlinden set?

not that particular one but i've had problems with them before, its a shame as they do some nice parts but you do have to work at getting them to fit...

Finely making progress!

Verlinden's cockpit was pretty nice though I had to make some command decisions. Anyone uses it in the future, the films that make up the dials need to be painted white on the back side or else the clear plastic film adds nothing to the display.

Also, realized too late that my cockpit is a little too...green. Was going for Green-Gray but, eh, I can live with it. I never let historical inaccuracies get in my way

This campaign seems to have slowed down a bit? The nice weather, is everybody travelling or busy finishing the "anything goes campaign"?

I got something today:

32 plates of aluminium, 3 mm thick, 715mm long and 420mm wide.

In 1/48 scale that is good for +/- 22000 square meter of airfield.

I just started two new kits for this campaign:

The academy 1/48 scale T-33. this seems to be a nice model with a limited number of parts but fit is excellent.

and the 1/48 scale Tamiya Skyray. this looks a fanastic model, fit is perfect, decals look great.

With the already launched Demon it means that I now have 3 kits going. Its a bit "over the top" but I aim at finalising at least one before the end of this campaign.

Next week, I will concentrate on the Al plates that I posted about in the previous message. That is the real job for this campaign.

;-)

Don't think that being an adult keeps me from flying the plane around my room while making engine and machine gun noises....because it doesn't

yep, 20m by +/- 55 cm. Now I have to find a trick to cut that thing precisely into 119mm by 60 mm pieces. Sounds masochistic, doesn't it.
