Hi guys, is it ok if I join in with this?

I started it earlier today and then by chance saw this campaign. Progress so far is just prepping a few parts for painting.

Cheers

Simon

Hi all, I'm thinking of joining this campaign. I have never entered a campaign, but I usually build 1/35 armour. After reading "lancaster men" by Peter Rees and I'm in the progress of reading "Australia's Few and the Battle of Britain" by Kristen Alexander which has got me inspired to try a plane. I have a 1/48 academy Spitfire ready to go with Aus decals...just need to find (or make) the time to get it started.

Oh yes - getting started is often just as challenging as actually finishing...

I havent lifted a finger on my Orion project yet, but I did pick up an other kit, so now I'm determined to make it a double build...

Hi all, I have just enlisted in this, my first ever campaign. Pretty excited as I usually build 1/35 armour. I will be building academy's 1/48 Spitfike MK .XIVc. I have got some decals to portray J. Boulten's invasion stripe spitz.. Will hopefully make a start tomoz.

Nice project

building kits out-of-the-box is fun and all, but model building is most interesting, imho, when you have the narrative history of what you are building in front of you.

Hi Jonathan, I agree completely. Sometimes a bit of background and history brings the models to life a bit more.

I have made a start on my spitfire today. After a small setback with the seat support, I have a resin seat with harness in position.

Here's an update, I have sprayed the cockpit light green, as well as added the seat and seat support, which have also been spayed light free. I am in the process of painting the seat and also detail painting the instrument panel(not pictured)

Ive made a start on these P-3Bs.
In general, I don't build combat aircraft. Orions can carry torpedoes, but these ones carry only a load of 16 grams of lead ballast epoxied in place.

In this scale there is not reason to paint or detail the interiors, you can just get a glimpse of color through the tiny windows. The instructions call for orange upholstery, I dont know how accurate that is, but it should add interest to the finished model.

Airframe major assembly complete. This is a good quality kit and just a small amount of joint fairing will be needed.

I should say I have a specific historical interest in these aircraft. I am building an airport model of Bucholz Army Airfield on Kwajalein, a US Military base where my family lived when I was a child in the 1960's.

here's what I have so far

there are some more pictures in this gallery, if anyone is interested.

RAAF Orions visited Kwajalein from time to time.

Just a progress shot. I have finished building and painting the cockpit. As can be seen I have glued the two halves together and now it's dry I'm starting to putty up the seams and sand flush with some wet and dry. I enjoyed painting the instrument panel and dry brushing all the dials on. I wish I had taken a photo as I was quite happy with the outcome.

Jonathan: love your P3, I had the privilage to serve on those during my enlistment. The 2 bunks and galley were a God send.

Nick: watching your Spit build has made me want to go out and pick up an Academy kit.

Hey Bob, These RAAF P-3s are part of a larger project of Orions seen on Kwajalein.
The first out was this JMSDF one.

JMSDF Neptunes were also seen often, well into the 1970's, but sadly, 1/144 Neptune kits are not easily obtainable.

I'll be building at least three USN Orions in the near future as well. (I have that many kits unbuilt in my stash! )
I have decals for VP19, VP40 and VP45, but the Pacific squadrons positively seen on Kwajalein were VP1 and VP4.

VP19 units out of Moffett certainly might have called at Kwajalein, though I have no proof of such.

The bunks and galley are absolutely necessary on a craft that can stand on station for 20-30 hours.

Id be glad to hear from anyone who has ever called at Kwajalein, if you are in contact with your mates.

OK, got in the 20mm cannons for my Boomerang, didn't need the MG I ordered since they're recessed into the wing..

Any hints on prepping brass parts for assembly and paint??

Hi Bob, yeah whilst they aren't the most complex or highly detailed kits OOB, they are fun and construction is straight forward, which makes it more enjoyable sometimes.

The models and airport are impressive. Did you scratchbuild the airport or are they 1/87 kits?

Its 1/144 as are all the aircraft. It's all scratch built from Evergreen styrene sheet and angle, except the control room and aerials, which were part of a Sankai laser cut kit. THere are a number of N scale details in the scene as well, handrails, figures, etc.

progress report: have assembled and glued the wing halves and added to the main air frame. I have also added the rear flaps. I can say all is going well, quite relaxing after my last detailed build/diorama... A nice change of pace.

Cheers Bob. Yeah its a bit different from 1/35 armour. I just purchased Dragon's 1/32 Wing Tech BF-110, its huge. Wing span over 0.5m....

Hi All,
While going through my Italian planes to find something for the Overshadow Fighters build I ran across this kit and noticed it had Australian Markings with it so I thought what the heck, I'll join Aussie Build as well!
I will probably make a few extra decals and make this into the Roulettes Aerobatic Team plane.
Here is my starting image.

Just an update, I have finished the majority of the build, and primed the entire plane, now just pre shadowed the panel lines, probably a bit thick but it's going to have d-day stripes on it.

The boomerang fuselage halves are glued together and tail bits have also been added. Need a bit of tidy up on filler at wing fuselage join but almost right to add some paint.

We have a nice little group build going now.

top of the page, KrisMax nice looking Kittyhawk kit, hope to it goes well!

Nick Pal, looks like your Spitfire might be the first over the line!

Jeff D. nice SuperModel kit! glad to see another modern era model in here.

Shorty, coming together nicely, the resin challenge hasn't held you up at all.

Ive gotten the cockpit glass masked on the P3s and a coat of primer.

thats one of the hurdles that often holds me up, cutting tiny, tiny bits of masking tape...

I want to do a bit of work on the wing root fillets, but besides that I'll be painting soon.
