Well the other Mk.XVI stalled as I was waiting for bits to arrive in the mail. I have those parts now and work can now continue.

My first attempt at the new Airfix kits and I'm quite impressed, they just need to vary the subject matter a bit I think.

Beautiful spit! I like the foam blocks you're using to support the plane, I'll be using that idea in the future.

Its probably time for an update, its been a while. Ive been working on my Italeri/ocidental spitfire IX focusing on the cockpit. Its nearing completion and paint will be soon. Its a bit excessive considering aftermarket is available (not to mention better kits)but I really wanted to do the work myself.





Its not intended to be super accurate mostly representative but based on what info I could find online since my personal spitfite references are lacking. Im going to laminate the instrument panel with some airscale decals on a backing plate. Im not yet decided if Im going to use after market harness and gunsight, which I have or if im going to continue the theme and make my own.

I've also obtained an Aeroclub correction set for the nose to correct this kits biggest fault, the nose. More to come!

Wow! There have been some brilliant builds since I last checked in!

I've got a short break from work next week, so I hope it'll allow some time to try to push my poor neglected Spit towards the finishing line. A rather chaotic summer meant I didn't have a chance to take any in-progress shots while I tinkered with the kit occasionally since my last update months ago. As well as adding the armour plate, I've made a couple of other changes based on photos of Battle of Britain aircraft, removing the flash-hiders and the crowbar. The model will be sat on its wheels, so I sliced off the elevators to give a bit of their characteristic droop.



Touch wood, I'll have some fun throwing paint at it next week.

I'm aiming to use Alclad's Mil Spec enamels throughout and have gone for the partly-black scheme to give a varied canvas on which to try out Life Colour's washes:

The Spit's provided my first opportunity to try Tamiya's Masking Tape for Curves and I'm pretty impressed:



It's quick and easy to use - and the Alclad dries so quickly, I should get the basic camo done this evening.

Well, as I hoped, the topsides are done and the masking's off. The result?... the contrast between the Dark Earth and Dark Green isn't quite what I expected, but I want to see it in the cold clear light of day before drawing any firm conclusions.

I don't know about the "cold clear light of day" - it's more of a dingy overcast this morning here on the Island.

Anyway, here's the result - there's obviously a little repair work needed where I sprayed the Dark Earth to thin in a couple of places:



As for the colours - well, the Dark Earth is definitely less red than the RAF Museum colour chip:



And the Dark Green is a tad muted:



As I've noted before, the colour chips in the RAF Museum book have been found to vary, so shouldn't be taken as "gospel". Both the Mil Spec colours are lighter than than the museum chips - call it "scale effect" (in fact the Dark Earth is a good deal paler) - so it could be the lack of red in the Dark Earth that counts towards the lack of contrast that struck me last night.

No progress to show today, because I've been busy gloss-coating. I started with Alclad's own enamel gloss varnish, but then realised I need review some Wilder oils too, so I figured Klear (Future) would be safer.

I'm going to go with the kit's decals and have read some ominous reports of them silvering badly, so I'm going to take my time and try to make sure I have a really nicely polished surface ready for them...

Awesome work guys, I have just taken some time to scroll through the pages of this thread and the work going into these builds is super impressive. Everything from basic builds, after market upgrades to scratch detailing, then such a variety of masking and painting and weathering techniques. This is going to be a thread that is bookmarked and reviewed as reference material for a long time to come, by a lot of us I'm sure.

Looking forward to more progress reports.

No pics (again!), but just proof that every tool has it's moment of glory! I recently bought a great set of polishing cloths... perfect for the Spit to get a glass-like finish ready for these somewhat notorious Tamiya decals.

Except... when the time came, could I find the b*ggers? No chance! Instead, I spotted a MasterCasters Miracle Polisher that I reviewed 10 years ago lurking forgotten in my tool stash. 10 years?... it seems like yesterday! - Ohh my goodness, I feel old!

And, yes - it did a brilliant job - just like it did back in the Dark Ages of the Noughties.

Hi guys. I'm still plugging away the Spit. She's had paint and decals applied. Photos later or if not sometime tomorrow.

Great work going on here! I haven't forgotten this one and have the fuselage together on The Pac Coast 1/32 Mk.XIV. Now working on fitting the wing. Pretty typical Pac Coast Spit, but I'm getting the hang of them. Pics soon,I hope.

The radiator flaps are in paint, as are the prop, chassis and spinner.

Lot of great work has been here. The removal has been accomplished and the man cave has been re-installed successfully. But, there still is lots of annoying dust from renovating .

My Spit has been closed for painting now.



And I tried to mix up the correct color with Tamiya acrylics.



The mixing instructions given by Tamiya were not convincing. Maybe, these colors will come close to the original?



What You say? Any clues are welcome.

Still some tidying up to do on the paintwork before final finishing.

And she's done. My last airplane model for the year. Now back to my beloved military vehicles (my first love) So this model depicts a Spitfire LF Mk.XVI of the Central Gunnery School at RAF Leconfield in Yorkshire in 1946-1947 where the Spitfire's along with Mosquito's were used in the Fighter affiliation role at the School. The Central Gunnery School later became the Fighter Weapons School.
