I just opened a couple of boxes.
These Arii RA-5C Vigilantes were for the Air Recce campaign of 2016. almost ready for paint.


here are two Aeroclub P2V-7 Neptunes well along, and a third kit in a bag (and in need of scratch building missing bits)

Need to cut, install and mask the vac canopies, noses and windows for them, and then can move ahead.
Also some N scale Ford Galaxies that need detail painting.

those two boxes have been on the top of my pile all year in 2016, and I open them from time to time and contemplated entering HQ6, but never did.

now this box, I admit I cringed as I opened just now to take this picture

Two Welsh vacuforms I built several years ago, almost ready for finishing except for all the problems I wont go into right now.

I think I'm going to join in this one for a specific reason. As I'm sure everyone here knows, a true American (indeed, human) hero recently passed away: John H. Glenn. I'd like to honor him with a model and have a couple of kits that fit the bill, but both are fairly well along:

I'm leaning towards the Mercury spacecraft, but we'll see when and if I get the chance to get going on one or the other. What do you think?

John Glenn was a wonderful man. I'd love to see that Mercury capsule built.


"Redstone booster not included" at 1:12 scale the rocket would be seven feet tall!! :O

You know - there is a Redstone rocket with a Mercury capsule standing outside a air and space museum in Concord NH, Ive been to see a few times. (recommended for anyone within driving distance)

this was Alan Sheppard's ride.


John Glenn's Mercury capsule was mounted on an Atlas rocket, and put him in orbit.


Up close, that rocket really looks like a toy, now that we've gotten accustomed to the SaturnV, and the Space Shuttle vehicles - it took some serious intestinal fortitude to climb into that capsule and let them light it off and send him 130 miles into space!

No less for John Glenn, because those Atlas rockets didn't have a really great success rate!

Monogram 1/72 F8F-1 - Ready to button up, and paint, but the windscreen has gone missing. Maybe somewhere on the bench. I’ve already got AM cannons and decals to finish it off with.

Airfix 1/72 DeHavilland Venom T.11 - Ultimate Build Off Campaign(?) - looks like the seams are done. Need to add the stabilizers and canopy. Then it should be ready for the paint shop.

RS 1/72 P-400 - Guadalcanal Campaign - In process, some issues to resolve then button it up and paint.

Tamiya 1/72 P-51D - Russell Anderson Campaign - Stalled when I had to pack it up and move back to Seattle.

Airfix 1/72 Commonwealth Boomerang - Ronnie RAAF Campaign - Mostly built on the road, just stalled when I headed home,

Airfix 1/72 F-105F - Century Series Campaign - Buttoned up, bottom is painted, just need to continue painting. Also need to find the fiddly bits. Stalled When I packed up to move.

Testors 1/48 P-51D - Mustang Heaven Campaign - Floquil new Old Silver. Looks like the painting’s all done, just needs the canopy and fiddly bits.

Frog 1/72 P-51A (Mustang 1) - NWSM Mustang group build - Heavily warped wing, fire damage, nearly straightened out. Just needs finished and painted.

Ace 1/72 A-7D - Corsair the Sky Pirate Campaign - Wonderful box art depicts this a a Navy plane (LOL). All buttoned up, started to try a wrap around camo, wasn’t happy about something, then it got put away for a move.

I'm right there with you mate, plenty of stalled builds from past campaigns. My thoughts - keep the Boomerang aside for when I start my Multi-Boomer-Build thread again, finish the rest here.

AMT 1/48 B-26 - Long term project, I might have stated it back in 1998. Lousy fits, terrible research, the 9 cylinder engine front is an AM part, as the kit engine only had 7 cylinders.. Has decals for “Big Hairy Beast” but all the bits are under one big coverlay. Instead of 5 invasion stripes, there are 6. Most of the parts are still there, some actually assembled.

Toko 1/72 P-63 Unsung Fighters Campaign? - Started while on the road but not a lot of progress.

Fujimi 1/72 RF4-B Pifty Years of Phabulous Phantoms - Cockpit, photo bay and inlets started. Then stalled.

Hasegawa 1/72 T-34 Trainers Campaign - fuselage together, ready to mate the wings and move towards the finish line,

Emhar 1/72 F-94C Interceptors Campaign - fuselage started, cockpit done, then I got an AM cockpit. Started while traveling, clearly not finished…

Academy 1/72 F4F-4 Battle of the Atlantic - Started, AM engine in progress. Started on the road and then stopped.


Antares 1/72 SC-1 Float-plane campaign - fuselage and cockpit started. Looks like the float is ready. Started on the road and never finished.

All, save the -60 are within striking distance of being finished this year.
Plus a few more more deeply buried in the stash. Amelia Earhart Lockheed Vega in 1/72, Rutan round the world jet and White knight 1.. an F15E or two.. including a whot-if Japanese version (LOVES me some stencil decals)

Academy 1/72 F-84E - Started on the road got the fuselage closed up, the wings are nearly ready, tip tanks in work. Getting a NMF finish was holding me up but I think I'm ready for it now.

Airfix 1/72 P-61 - Unofficial Black Widow Campaign. Got the painting started then got the DML kit and stopped on this one. No progress on the DML one at all.

Hasegawa P-40E - P-40 Workhorse of WWII Campaign - Started on AM for cockpit and wings but the photoetch overwhelmed me.

Italeri 1/72 PBJ-1 - Anti Shipping Campaign - Opened up the bomb bay, added AM to the bay doors. Lots more AM in the box. Got it started and then it just fizzled.

Condor 1/72 A-36 - Dive Bombers Campaign - got started, found out there was no cockpit detail (seat had gone missing). Waited for the AM in the background to arrive, meanwhile life happened.

Kitech (Zhengdefu) 1/72 F-16A - Knock off of an Academy kit?. Weak detail, I think the box said F-16A, but all the decals are for F-16Cs. Got started, even started a build log. Inlet wasn’t too bad after I shimmed the front end to match the lip. Looks like the joint failed in storage, Some progress on the cockpit.

Minicraft Academy 1/72 PV-1 - been in a couple of campaigns. Poor fits made worse by poor assembly work. Still on the desk, just painted the wheels last month.

Not shown Testers (Hawk) 1/72 XF-92A - Started this one by sanding off the rivet farm on the wrong wing… XF-92A should have had smooth wings, but several of the in-flight photos show tufts of yarn glued to the wings to visualize airflow over the wings. The rivets might have been a good way to show the yarn on an otherwise bland kit. Typical first generation kit, no landing gear, no cockpit, thick canopy, giant rivets and poor fits...

That makes 24 hanger queens, plus I found 4 stalled armor projects, 3 ships and 2 cars. Plus there were 3 stalled projects my son left behind.

Now which one to target for finishing?

Bob, thanks for the encouragement, but instead of the Wildcat, I'm going with the Testors P-51D. It's the closest to finished of the batch.


I figure:
Glue up, fill and sand the spinner.
Prime the spinner (yellow stripe), propeller blades, exhaust manifolds and rear tire (made from rubbery material).
Paint the spinner and propeller tips yellow
Paint the wheels in Mr. Color Tyre
Paint propellers black
Paint exhausts rusty
Touch up interior green bits
Red stripes on spinner
Touch up canopy frame
Detail Radios
Install radios
Put instrument panel back in
Add pilot
Wire up antenna and canopy and glue in place
Assemble propeller
Add antenna
Glue up landing gear and install
install rear wheel
Install gear doors
Install exhaust
Add Decals
Install wing tanks
Declare victory?

OK! Mark I will be waiting to hear you yell VICTORY

I hear good things about the ZM kits, but not my scale so I've never dabbled.
Seems a shame after all that work NOT to finish and get a campaign ribbon for her.

And Mark, when you list out all the steps like that it seems pretty daunting, huh...
You've got all year for this one we will be rooting for you!

Thanks Damien, Rob and Mike. I thought I had a project, that Horton is a real handful.

I picked the P-51 cause it was closest. That list made it sound daunting. Some of the others would have seemed worse. I had been thinking og the Thud or Corsair II next. I'll keep the Wildcat in mind.

Confusion say trip of 1000 miles begins with the first step.

Mark, I use those same clamps and never thought of how you are using it at this time. Thanks for the tip Ill try it out.

Invention meet necessity. I was trying to use a ratcheting clamp but it wouldn't clamp, took me two tries to make this work. I've gotten a bunch of these clamps IIRC they run 6 for U$2 at Harbor Freight. I've used them pads in for wings, gripped fuselages inside the "C" and at least once before with the pads out.

Time to walk the walk.
Monograms (wildly inaccurate) B-1 bomber w Two Bob's decals. I do love their stuff, but dayummm, put some freaking decal numbers on the sheets... which teeny tiny stencil goes where is damn near impossible to tell. Add them to a dk grey airframe and they all but disappear.




My weekend progress..



The two-part decals were, surprisingly not the biggest difficulty. Squadron badges in two layers and rescue flags.




Dont worry, the glass is just fixed in place temporarily to get the paint coat on, I'll get it faired in better when it's done.

Between this and next weekend, I might even get this one done.. in the first month!!

Progress, got the spinner glued together and sanded out, chucked it up in the cordless Dremel and went to work. Got a few of the Interior Green touch ups done, Started on the radios, they're actually black, not the silver that the camera showed.
