This is all you get in the Jewel Like Models Electra kit - one sheet of plastic and one sheet of paper.


I couldnt discover how old this kit is or how many were made, or who made it, but I'm going to go ahead and build it, so collectors will see their remaining stock increase in rarity.

sanding out the landing gear struts and wheels should be interesting. I like that wheel wells have been provided.

I promised myself not to join every campaign or group build for which I have the fitting kit in my stash but this time I'll brake my own rules. Not because of my weak will but in an act of solidarity with Jessica and her thoughts and comments about the Lost Arts and other Aeroscale related matters.

This one came in about three days ago, all resin with just few bits of PE. As you see the kit box is still sealed by the producer.

Step 1 is to cut the sheet up to give access to all the parts

Everything looks ok, but i hate the props. I think i will order some nice metal ones from Contrails.
Since we mentioned the nose gear Ill start there.
A simple strut in two halves and wheels again in halves.

not sure yet how the wheel well will go into the fuse, or how the strut will go in. Instructions? pah. will engineer as needed.

AHA, I see. In the first picture only 1 of the 'braces' was visible on each strut, both on the same side. Well, you succeeding far beyond what I would have done.
Any special tricks for cutting the parts out? Just a single edge razor blade?

yes. You score downward diagonally along the edge of the part, then grasp each side of the score with flat nosed pliers and SNAP the part away from the waste.
Jessica provided these images, (sadly all the other tutorials in past vacuform threads have been lost to botophucket. )

ITs important to color the intersection of part and sheet, so that after the part is snapped out, you can see what needs to be sanded away.

There is actually an advantage to the vacuform medium, at least for airplanes - you can get really thin trailing edges

I like how this tail goes together. the upper part has the dihedral built in, and you just glue on the lowers.

the advantage is that the mating surfaces are absolutely flat, no gaps to fill, if you do it right!

Jon, I assume you mean sand to the bottom of the blue line, not sand off the blue line.

exactly. the surface of the sheet is the bottom of the part. everything below that line is flash that has to come off.

Found an old RAREplanes SB2U-1 lurking in the stash. You guys keep this up I might give it a try. Might have to scrounge an old tool Airfix SBD for a few detail parts.

Yes, I started as well, and against all good advise of people on this site to start with a less complicated kit first, I embarked on the Sanger B-52.

It appears that I now start understanding the true meaning of Vac form, or, my list of known unknowns (where I am aware that I have a total lack of skill to deal with an issue) has become extravagantly long after one weekend of building and I have of course no clue how long the list of unknown unknowns still is.



Still, this thing is promising. I've never seen such big 1/48 scale kit.

@Mark: nice kit and Jonathan has you on the correct path.

@drabslab: nice looking kit, just take your time. Plan out everything before cutting and I will watch this B-52 with pleasure.

Ive usually used pencil or a marker to mark the piece before sanding, but I will try your method Jonathan.

Well, I actually part-built the solid-nose variant of MPM's Fw 58 years ago and the main parts go together really nicely. I didn't think it was fair to resurrect that old build for this Campaign, so I'll start again with the bomber-trainer. I can see a problem ahead with the glazed nose - but more on that when we get there.
