Probably is time for another Korean War campaign. The last one was back in 2011. I'm sure I've got a few candidates for another one.

Good idea. We've all probably got at least one kit in the stash that works for both.
A quick look at mine I can see a Churchill Croc I have Korean markings for, a Skyraider AEW and Israeli Ouragan. Bound to be other stuff still packed away.

In the meantime I need to get this one done first. Hoping to get some decals on the F-5 tomorrow.

Got the decals on my F-5 today. I used the ones form the PM kit, so I was surprised that they behaved themselves and stuck on. I think the blue on the national insignia is a little bright (in the photos it's showing a lighter shade), but I'm happy with it.

Here’s my rendition of ESCI’s M48A3 Patton in 1/72 scale.

This classic kit from the early 1980s has a lot going for it, but I did make a few changes:

• 14 road wheels and 10 return rollers corrected to doubled configuration
• track horn guide channels added to the centers of the drive sprockets
• mounted tracks and spares on turret improved with Hasegawa M1 Abrams track inside surfaces
• headlight guards made from lead foil, headlights hollowed out and acetate lenses added
• tool boxes on fenders improved with new plastic lids, hinges, & wire handles
• air cleaners on fenders improved with wire and sheet plastic details
• Xenon light improved with wire, facial tissue cover, and hand painted MAIN DEALERS logo
• wire securing ring and lead foil clips added to blast bag at base of barrel
• .50 cal machine gun replaced with a Hasegawa part improved with wire and plastic stock
• various handles, lifting rings, antennae, MG barrel deflector, and hatch mechanism made from wire
• raised casting codes on turret top are numbers shaved from plastic model sprue labels
• turret basket scratchbuilt from plastic, wire, and nylon mesh; stowage from various sources
• markings hand painted and assembled from model railroad stencil decals

The model depicts DISASTER, a M48A3 (late model) Patton of the MAIN DEALERS, 2nd Platoon, ‘C’ Company, 1st Marine Tank Battalion during operations Southeast of Da Nang in February of 1970.

I only see two problems:

1. That's an M48A3 as you state at the beginning, not an M4A3E8 as you say at the end (even I know that difference).

2. No way that's 1/72, it's gotta be at least 1/35. Very nice job!

Ha, you are right, Michael! I did build a 1/72 scale Korean War Sherman a while back, must have been thinking of that (the .50cal machine gun used on this Patton actually came from that Hasegawa Sherman kit)… anyway, I‘ve now put the pictures in the gallery and corrected the above entry to read, “M48A3”.

Tim I had to actually scroll back a few pages to check that You did in fact build a 1/72 kit, not a 1/35. What else to say ? The lights, the equipment, the .50 cal. just perfect. And great presentation too...I like the smell of Gunze in the morning...smells like... end of a succesfull aeroscale campaign

I tried to dress it up a bit with weathering, it nearly worked. I also tried to create an appearance of a ceiling in the cockpit. I added a piece of paper with a diamond pattern to represent the sound deadening pad and a panel with switches between the green glass.


I had hoped to get the Navy one done in time also, but that's not going to happen.


Some wear and tear in the cabin and lots of red dust.

Tim, really nice job on the M48.

Spent this afternoon doing some of the final fiddly bits on my F-5. Would have had it finished this afternoon but got dragged out by the other half.

That'll happen. You've got all day tomorrow, you can do it!

Tim, no way is your Patton 1/72! Fantastic work and finish.

Mr K, great wqrk on your F-5. The paintwork is really nicely done.

Mark, great work on your Heuy and ingenious use of the paper for the interior insulation. I've got something similar made form foil I'm planning on using for the flak padding installed inside AC-47's. I think it was the foil seal from a large tin of coffee.

And finally making at across the finish line is my F-5A finished in markings of the 4503rd TFS 1966.
Built form the Matchbox 1/72 kit, using the belly tank and decals from the PM kit and M117's from the spares box.







I think it needs a little weathering with some pigments and a wash in some places to make it a little more visually interesting. Looking at the photo's it looks a bit plasticy and toy like. I might attempt that over the summer holidays.

Still it's a kit I'm glad I finally got around to building as I'm a huge fan of Matchbox and it will do until I can get the Wolfpack kit.
