Got loads done over last couple of weeks

Under carriage done just need to get the decals on. They are a pain as they are pretty old and the ones I have used so far have broke in parts. So the tail section could be a mare.

AN/ALQ-131 installed in place of one of the front Sparrow missiles.

Yes Phil correct. Thats all that was available in the kit, I spent enough on upgrades already lol.

So, I've been procrastinating on getting back to my phantom. But this AM I went to start putting the canopy mask on and started wondering about whether the front window should be tinted on mine. Anyone know whether the front oval window on a Marine phantom in 'nam should be tinted? And if so, in what color?

I don't believe the front oval windscreen window on a Phantom is actually tinted. I have shot a lot of photos of Phantoms and have sat in numerous Phantom cockpits over the years and none had a strong tint. They are usually armored glass which would have a subtle greenish tint but I think the best way to capture this is not to tint the oval window of a model. It is way too easy to over tint the window. I'll try and dig up a few photos in the next few days.

I've got a completely unworkable idea. The two big dogs in the quarter scale F-4 world right now are Academy and Zoukei-Mura. There's also an IDF campaign going on Armorama until the end of the year and wingey-things are welcome. How about a dual (duel?) F-4 build? A ZM F-4E for the IDF campaign and an Academy F-4J for this campaign. I'd probably start a separate build log thread for it and link both campaigns.

I know I'm being wildly optimistic about this, but it sure could be fun!

I have not. And I've only partially started on an Academy one. So learning experiences will abound!

I have not built one. I have been looking at the early E but two things have made me hesitate. First, the kits seem only to have a2a weapons. That's fine, but I'd like to have some mud ordnance with the kit.

Second, I was more interested in a later E, which they will get to, I'm sure.

Folks have talked about the fit of the plate on the back. It's a great concept for doing the back of the plane, but it seems like everyone who has built one complains about that fit. I'm eager to hear your experiences on it.

Indeed it's my understanding that they do plan to do a late -E with slats, and a -G as well. As for fit issues, I generally seem to find them all if they exist, as well as creating my own.

I think my issue with lack of ordnance doesn't really matter. It looks like with any of the phantoms you need to get some after market to build a cool mud moving loadout.

Are the 1/48 Hasegawa weapons sets nice?

The build that I have been working on is getting to the point where I now have a little time to squeeze another project in while things are drying so it is time for me to start on my Phantom build for this campaign. I posted earlier that I will be doing a 1/72 JASDF RF-4E in one of the 50th Anniversary schemes. I am using the Hasegawa kit as it comes with the decals that I need.

I have built a few of the 1/72 Hasegawa Phantoms before and am unexcited about the cockpit detail that comes with the kit. For this build, I will use an Aires F-4E resin pit as the differences are pretty subtle in this scale. Here's the Aires cockpit with the resin ejection seats after some clean-up and before priming/painting.





On to the build!
