Don't worry, Merlin! We'll find something for you! Right now, we are a little bit short on Egyptian and French subjects. There is a nice F-84F from FM in 1/48! And it would be a shame to have a Suez Campaign without a Mig, don't you think?!

Hi PolarBear

Well - I've got FM's Halifax on the workbench - and I have to say, one FM kit per year is enough. I have my sanity to consider! LOL! I agree about getting more Egyptian aircraft. I don't really fancy building a MiG (I've got quite enough Soviet aircraft on the go at the moment! LOL!), but I just spotted this on your list of aircraft link:

He Gomhouria T.Mk.1 (Bόcker Bό.181): over 300 of these light trainers were build under licence at the works in Heluwan. Aluminium overall, roundel on the rear fuselage, and national colors on the fin.

I think I've still got an old MPM Bücker Bestmann tucked away somewhere - I'll have to check - and maybe I can take the decals from Flashback's Magister. Hmmm - Magister! I don't suppose the Egyptians were still flying them?

I won't be able to start for ages, so I'll see then what everyone else is doing and if there's a gap to plug.

All the best

Hi again

In my effort to find potential gap-pluggers, I took advantage of a lovely 1/2 day at work and looked in at Comet Miniatures on the way home. Guess what I found; a Heller 1/48 scale F-84F on sale for... wait for it... £3!

The Thunderstreak has always been among my favourite early jets - and for £3 I can't complain even if the kit will need some work to bring it up to scratch. The question is - are there any decals available for Suez Thunderstreaks?

All the best

Nice one Andy!

I did a Google-search but drew a blank - just a ref that made it seem like the Carpena sheet was long out of production.

Many thanks

Great price on that Thunderstreak, Merlin! £3 is a far cry from the £ 46.40 for the FM/Xkit version (i.e. the Heller kit with some improvements - but hey! - who needs improvements?) charged by Hannants!

Here is an updated - but still very preliminary - list of partipants so far! There's room for a lot more participants, especially in the Egyptian forces!!!

Vanize - Any thoughts on which Mosquito version you might be building? Check a bit down on this page for a picture and some info.

Cheers!

I think i'll put my Isradecal set for mosquitos to use

Great! I was hoping that there would be a Mosquito entry! Are we talking 1/72 or 1/48!?

actually the Isradecals include both. I have a 1/48 Tamiya Mk. IV kit in the stash, but that option leaves me with only an overall silver (not even NMF, just overall silver) finish as far as i can tell. Seems like there are going to be lots of silver/NMF aircraft in this campaign though. If I do a photo recon version (with glazed nose), then I can do the beige and slate blue camo scheme. If I go that route, there is some chance I'll do it in 1/72.

(don't even tempt me with that gold ribbon!!!)

And is every egyptian aircraft during this period NMF?

Wow!!! This is just getting better and better!

A Thunderstreak, a Venom(!) and maybe a Hunter (I didn't even think of that one)!!!

And just a little while ago, I got this message from GunTruck (with a special message to TedMamere):

Bring-it-on! I'm going to do the 1/72 scale Trumpeter Wyvern - just put the order in for it a few minutes ago. I'll be anxious to see the larger scale one done by Jean-Luc, he renders artistically pleasing aircraft models.

Seeing the Wyvern in both scales should be cool for the Aircraft Focus on site. I can't wait for the kit to arrive...

Jim

But wait a minute! - Ain't nobody gonna build an Avenger!?!

Just kidding! Cheers!

This had totally passed me by until today.
Thanks for the pm Bjorn:)
Can you believe that a Sea Fury that came as a 2 kit pack on Ebay,,( I was after the 2nd kit and the Sea Fury was a bonus),,arrived in the post today.
The decals are very yellowed and I was wondering what I could do with it
All I need to do now is find some.
Am I right in thinking that only the Egyptians used Furys?

Hi there

Here's my £3 beauty! :-)

The tattiest box I've ever seen - but the parts inside are perfect! As good as the day they were made - mid '70s?

With regard to combat aircraft operational in 1956, there was one great exception - the Meteor NF.Mk.13 night-fighter! (See more info here under Egypt/Camouflage Colours)

I think so! The Sea Fury will be a great entry! Good luck with the decals! I take it you've seen the profile on the site linked above?

Welcome to the campaign, Nigel!

Nigel! You might be able to use the roundels from the Egyptian spitfire? They appear to be approx. the same size.

Hi Bjorn.
I was thinking that something like that would be an alternative.I would imagine the markings would be pretty generic.Maybe someone could give me an answer on this?

Edit - I added EDC:s Mig 15, to even up the forces!

Finally a Mig! Great choice (and a sorely needed one for the Egyptians)!

I noticed that there are decals from both Cutting Edge and HiDecals!

I have just signed up. I have actually got quite an odd entry to this campaign. I am going to enter a flat figure. I know this sounds odd but read on. Western Miniatures have recently started to produce flats of WW1 aircraft and recentley they have added some WW2 planes to the list. I bought a few at a recent show and amongst them is a P-51D, which for this campaign I am going to paint up as an Isreali machine.

Hi Ross

That sounds like it'll easily win the prize for the most unusual entry!

Hi Ross! Welcome to the campaign!

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know what a "flat figure" is!

Will it be flat like this?

Cheers!

Ok, I think i have my specific aircraft pinned down - a mosquito mk.vi, serial #67, from the "valley" squadron painted in tan and slate blue.

here is where i could use a little research help though - I don't actually have a picture of it with the suez stripes, but i do know it was painted this scheme, as were some of its stablemates in the squadron, as evidenced by this photo which claims to have been taken in 1955:

note the spinner is clearly not black, so it must be red, since only two (non photo rec) squadrons used the mosquito at this time - the "knights of the north" and "valley" squadrons, with black and red squadron colors respectively.

here is a color profile of this plane from "wings pallette":

and here is a color profile of a tr.33, sn#78, from the same squadron during the suez crisis:

that last profile seems accurate compared to photos i have seen of that same plane.

so basically i would guess sn#67 would have similar campaign stripes to sn#78, given they were in the same unit.

so far so good. my only concern is that sn#67 might have been written off before the suez crisis. there is also a lesser chance it was repainted in silver dope, but i doubt this, as it seems that all other mosquitos painted tan and blue before the campaign remained that way, plus no other type of aircraft seemed to revert to silver either (i think).

to the crux of the matter then - essentially i am asking if any of you happen to know of a resource where i can find inventories or write off lists of israeli aircraft during the '50s so that i can check if sn#67 survived until the start of the suez crisis. I have found this sort of info for 1960s IAF inventories, but not for the previous decade. anyone out there know a source or actually have the info?

thanks for any help,
-v-

Hi Vance,

A couple of thoughts regarding the entries. - The subjects that enter must not neccessarily have been flying during the Suez hostilities, as long as they have a substantial connection to the conflict. Two of my entries (the Meteor and the Vampire) are going to be "dressed" for an air battle that took place in 1955 - a prelude to the war to come. I found the story interesting and the subjects connections to the conflict more than sufficient, so I thought them suitable for the campaign.

Speaking of Mosquitos - One of the reasons for the Israeli success was the reconnaisance and intelligence gathering made by their PR.XVI:s prior to Operation Kadesh. These will of course be allowed! Should someone wish to enter a Syrian aircraft, or a unit from the American Sixth Fleet in the eastern Mediterannean on hight alert 1956, it might be allowed.

And of course you may enter the FB.VI!!! Preferably with stripes! (Btw, is it hard to rebuild as an TR.33? PolarBear loves folded wings!)

Keep doing the research, though!! This is a historical campaign, and hopefully we will all learn one or two things!

According to this page, 13 Israeli fighter bombers took part in the conflict. I haven't found any list of the individuals though.

But there is good news (I think). Aren't these the stripes that you are looking for!?! (Check the wing tips!)

The caption reads: "Mosquito Mk6 from 110 Squadron at Ramat-David during operation "kadesh" 1956".

:-)

Ps. You can find a whole lot of IDF/AF links here: http://www.iafe.net/links.htm

Cheers!
