********************************************

Fellow aircraft modellers!

We need more campaigns! Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the Suez conflict! I suggest that we commemorate this with a campaign here on Armorama!

The conflict included an extensive variety of early jets (and late props) from a wide range of countries. These are arguably some of the most beautiful - and coolest! - aircraft ever built. Just go through this list of aircraft, and tell me (honestly!) that your mouth does not drool and that your fingers don't start itching! You can see some examples at the bottom of this post. Many of the planes used in the conflict have been subject to recent releases.

The rules will be very simple. Any aircraft participating in the conflict (and marked as such), in any scale. You may choose English, French, Israeli or Egyptian aircraft. Historical accuracy is key!

I suggest that the campaign will start in May and end on the eve of the 50th anniversary, i.e. the 28th of October (when the first kill was made by an Israeli Meteor NF.Mk13).

Please tell me if you support this campaign idea! If you have any ideas for improvment, let me know!

Cheers!!! :-)

I,m all for it!...... I've got at least 6 56' Suez canal 48th kits waiting to be built. That link has some very colourful omissions, such as the French naval Corsairs.

since Tamiya's is not the right one for the IAF-
is there a 1/48 kit of the Meteor?

Elad,

I don't usually build 1/48 but I know that Classic Airframes has a couple of versions of the Meteor in 1/48 (the F.4, T.7, F.8, FR.9 and NF.11/13, all used by IAF during the war), as well as the awsome-looking English Electric Canberra, some different Vampires, the Westland Wyvern S.4 and the Hawker Sea Hawk (both with Suez markings) etc, all eligable for the proposed campaign!!!

Hmmm.... I was thinking that perhaps there should be more than one ribbon. The "bronze" for one entry, the "silver" for two or more entries (single or multiple nationalities) and the "gold" for a Grand Slam, i.e. at least one aircraft from each of the four involved nations! What do you think of that idea?

I agree!! It was actually TedMameres excellent Corsair in the Air over the Sea Campaign (see page three and forward) that got me hooked on the idea of a Suez campaign here on Armorama in the first place!

Great! The Canberra is soooo cool!

Hi all!

Count me in for that! I already did a French F4U7 Corsair in Suez markings but there are surely other interesting subjects... Did F6F Hellcats flew with that kind of markings

Hi Jean-Luc!

Great to see that you wish to join!

Are you sure that F6F Hellcats were flown in the Suez war, though? I know that they were part of the French Aeronautique Navale in Indochina 1954, but I have not seen any indication that they were around in 1956.

Even so, there are plenty of interesting subjects. How about aiming for a "Grand Slam" (see my post above)?! :-)

Now, just a few more participants....

(btw, 007 wishes to join, too!)

Yep, I'm in too (although I suffer from very serious modelling-blues at the moment).
It's a very nice campaign idea with great and colorfull planes as far as I can see.
It's a piece of history I don't know so much abou, so that makes it extra interesting; to do research and 'dig out' the history books!
Thaks for the link PolarBear!

Good thinking, 007!

It would be nice if we could all a lot of history to the campaign.

Now, all we need are some more interested modellers!

This is a historical campaign, following the events that took place 50 years ago! The rules are very simple and all aircraft that were involved in the conflict will be allowed.

Will the campaign still be run with the 'Bronze, Silver and Gold' ribbon setup?

I've joined this campaign, and you're right, there really are some beautiful aircraft from that era. Now to track something apporpriate down!

Hi Björn!

I always enlisted in so many Campaigns that one more won't make a big difference! :-) Count me in of course!
I didn't choosed my plane yet but I'm tempted by the Wyvern... let's see if I find something today at my LHS in Metz.

Sure thing, Frank! I'm aiming for at least Silver (two aircraft). :-)

I'm planning a group of early jets. I think I'm going to start with my own little "duel in the sky", i.e. an IDF/AF Gloster Meteor FR.9 flown by Captain Aaron Yoeli and one of the two Egyptian De Havilland Vampires that he shot down (both available in 1/48 from Classic Airframe). This battle took place before the Suez hostilities, but it was the first jet air combats in the region, and is considered as one of the sparks of the conflict. - If I manage, I'm going to try to build a French (Both FM and Special Hobby are releasing F-84F in 1/48) and a Brittish aircraft as well (perhaps a Venom, if available) = GOLD! But that's a future story, though...

Then again, I must admit that I feel slightly confused. Until now, I've only built Swedish aircraft in 1/72. Where am I going to place the Swedish markings on these aircraft!? And how big is 1/48?!?

The Thunderflash is definitely one of the most beautiful aircraft! I love the nice boxart on this Heller kit:

Thanks to all of you that wishes to join! :-)

Hi there

I'll have to think about joining up too! With my bad reputation, I'm loathe to have to drop out of yet another campaign, but October IS a nice long way off...

All the best

Don't think (a highly overrated and often dangerous activity)! Just do it!

Something Brittish perhaps?

Cheers!

Ps. The camaign will last until October 28th!! Your reputation may have changed by then?! :-)

LOL! I doubt that! :-)

But I did have a quick look at the shelves this morning - there are the Classic Airframes Sea Hawk and Wyvern grinning at me. I was lucky enough to receive the stunning Goffy Model detail set for the Wyvern, so that might be the one to go for... But then there are those Vampires in your list of aircrtaft - and I've got the Aeroclub correction set for my Classic Airframes kit, so that would be fun too! Or the Israeli P-51D... Decisions, decisions!

I'll have a ponder! The real laugh would be to do the Halifax! No! I won't even THINK about that! :-)

I agree! Doing the Halifax would probably be madness!!!

But how about a Lancaster???

I just happened to see this set from Xtradecal at Hannants!!

Cheers Polar Bear

I've got two Tamiya lancs in the stash... and I can assure you that's where they'll stay for the time being! :-)

If I join in, it'll be with something much smaller and more manageable (so an Israeli B-17 isn't going to happen either! LOL!).

I've been thinking about a nice ribbon as an award in this campaign. I'm not sure if it can be done, but I was hoping to have one "Gold", one "Silver" and one "Bronze" (see the rules).

Here are my first ideas and sketches. Any thoughts?

Some touching up is definitely needed! Please note that I only have "Paint" in my computer. For anything more elaborate, I'm going to need assistance!

Cheers!

Hi Björn!

I like the ribbons to! I don't know if it is possible to award multiple ribbons for one Campaign though... you should ask Jim (GunTruck) first.
I wouldn't use blue, green or purple for the background but rather gold, silver and bronze colors.
