April 3, 2009, Pre - weekend report Aeroscale Early Aviation Hangar #1.

We find the figure of Liet. Gen Jack Flash busy at his work / hobby desk with;

1 @ 1/48 Eduard Camel
1 @ 1/48 Eduard Fokker Dr.I
2 @ 1/48 DML / Dragon Fok. Dr.I
1 @ 1/48 Eduard Fok. E.II / III
1 @ 1/48 Eduard Roland C.II
11 @ 1/48 kit reviews ( 6 a/c & 5 figures)

"I think I am forgeting something. . . Ursula!, darling where is my Bengal Spice tea? Where is that woman? I hear laughter. . . " Peeking around the office south corner all becomes clear. It seems the all-girl ground crew has sparked off an impromtu training session. Pillow fights in daylight. Nothing but nether garments. "This is going to be a long weekend folks. These situations usually wind up with my uniform trousers hanging from the flag pole and me sleeping off my exhaustion. Well, a man's got to do what a man's got to do. I did sign up for this. . . Ladies, uh ladies now see here!"

The Hangar door slides shut and a "do not disturb" sign is hung on all chain locked entrances.

Aeroscale Early Aviation Hangar update from last memo.
Greetings one and all;

Good news! I have just been informed that I just won my second Thornton D. Hooper award for excellence in historical research from Over the Front League of aviation historians. Letter was dated Sept. 1 2009. This is a league award from members and writers that vote for the best articles in a given year on specific subjects. Mine seems to be unit history for the year 2007. "Jasta 64w Eight Months in a Field of Thorns". My first win was back in 1994 concerning the late Herrn Josef Jacobs and a portion of his personal diary "Kobes in Fokkerstaffel-West" by Stephen T. Lawson. This is represented in a small commemorative goblet with the article title and my name and the year.

The League awards the annual Thornton D. Hooper Award for Excellence in Aviation History to the best articles and artwork appearing in several categories in Over The Front. This award is named for Thornton D. Hooper, a pioneer American bombing pilot of the First World War, who lost his legs on a bombing mission while serving as commanding officer of the 11th Aero Squadron, United States Air Service, during the summer of 1918. Hooper's wartime career was chronicled in The First Team, a book published by the League.

http://www.overthefront.com

While I have several awards that I am proud to have acquired in my life I have just been given another.

Regards to all
Stephen T. Lawson

As the holidays approach I offer this short treatise on a subject near and dear to our hearts.
"...The subject of this memo is burnout. That dread affliction first diagnosed in 1916 by Dr. Hertz Van Rental while he was but an intern at Sister Consumpta's free clinic / bar and grill. It is noted in that with the diagnosis of AMS (Advanced Modeler's Syndrome) that the patient may find that there develops dry and scaly (1/72) patches. This is often accompanied by bouts of lacko-n-trest in modeling. These are but symptoms of larger issues.

Most critically is the visual aspect of wide open pupils, noting constantly "...I will never build all of these kits..."

The road map to modeling longevity is a healthy outlook.
1. Never let healthy competition (contests) and their out come taint your enjoyment of the build.

2. Build for yourself, but never be afraid to try new things. Variety is the spice.

3. Stay out of ruts. Consume solid norishment and beware of fast internet feeding frenzys. Take your reference information first hand not the from 30 year old speculations and regurge that lead to disappointment when you discover your triplane should be red and white not blue and white.

4. Have a life away from modeling. Life is short and you can't take anything with you when you go. Enjoy yourself.

5. Nothing is permanent, there is always room for one more build.

6. Revisit an old friend. take one of your favorites down from the shelf and build it without aftermarket PE, resin or decals. Out of the Box therapy.

7. Evaluate your condition and pick the therapy that gives you the fresh perspective.

8. Never mix alcohol and cyano...it does not make a better bonding agent. Trust me on this one.

9. Visit the local internet modeling hangar and peek under the tarps...Especially over on the editor's side...

10. Have fun, its a hobby enjoy the praises and critiques of people you admire. Never take anything personally.

Here is a bit of Christmas fun. It may not be earth shattering but my challenge to you is to find a yong person who has expressed an interest in your work. Then give as a gift one of your completed or unbuilt kits to that child. When you give a completed kit as a gift you are actually giving from your own time as well as the money it took to purchase a kit. Maybe it is a child in a hospital under going radical surgery and has to be away from home for the holidays. It is a sure way to put the joy of the season into your life. Older kids may find an unbuilt kit, books, video more appealing.

I do this often. I think it is better for me than the youngster. Many kids in the 'hood have had exposure to modeling they would otherwise never have gotten.

Rumor mill: Camogirl has herself laid up with a broken leg. Officially she broke it riding a horse. Unofficially she was upset about the score of a sporting event and climbed up on the bar to kick the TV, slipped on a wet bar towel and took out 3 burly construction workers. The last thing anyone heard her say was "!@#@!%%*&^%##$!(%$ crooked zebras!!!!!" So its easy to see the confusion.

Rumor confirmation: Mrs. CaptainA told Mr. CaptainA not to use the wood from the old Doghouse to make the diorama just yet, because it may come in handy for other uses.

Many 1/48th Albatri are currently in stock. 1/32nd Albatri are a bit harder to disguise, especially with that darned mailperson ringing the doorbell all the time.
