Carl;
The ribbion looks great.

Ihave both Academy and Hasegawa 38s in the stash. Based on Hermons comments maybe will stick with the Academy offering

Hi, I'm no expert on WW2 aircraft, so I found tons of Mustangs, P-38's, some B1 & B2 also some WW2 carrier-fighters.
I'm not sure if the markings were correct for the 8th, so I was wondering if someone could point my in the right direction of some Academy-Revell-Hasegawa.Tamyia-HobbyBoss kits, mostly 1-72.

Thanks

Edited post: .. couldn't wait so I got a Tamyia Mustang

Count me in but my build will be a little different. A 1/72 RC-135 Rivet Joint. Finally an excuse to build it.

Btw there were never any F-15's in the 8th Air Force. It has been Bomber based for several years. The closest you can come to a fighter is the A-10...

Well I think I'll crack open academy's Old crow p-51b
Fitting since it is d-day tomorrow.
Found this great site for very in depth detail of old crow

http://www.cebudanderson.com/p51bdetailpage.htm

Will build with invasion stripes and white wall tyres,
looks inviting.

I just dragged a 1/48 B-17 out of the closet. I will be starting it next week if the weather does not cooperate (i.e. if I am not out on the links). I was hoping the 1/48 B-24 would hit the shelves before I got started.

Is this the official thread for the entire campaign or has a new thread been started for the "build" portion of the campaign? I haven't seen any progress and wanted to make sure I had the right thread marked. I had to pull out of the campaign due to work issues but hope to return should things calm down. Looking forward to seeing some of the builds

This is the thread. I have made a little bit of progress on my fort. But, a run in with some weeds in my yard have had me on the sidelines. My fingers looked like wieners.

aeroscale sure is quiet these days.

Well to liven things up I'll bite off more than I can chew.
Academy 1/72 P51b as old crow. eduard PE inside and out.
Aires packard merlin in an exposed engine bay. Has all the
ingredients for disaster. I'm really quite nervous about slicing
the nose up. So I'll do that first. I'd hate to waste all that nice PE
on a balls up. This could well be an abortion as the whole engine
bay including the mounts will need scratching. I think coke can
is probably the best bet for the mounts, and the cowling panels.

Wish me luck. Any references/plans detailing the engine bay
very much appreciated.

well cracked out the ol razor saw and started hacking away. I've now liberated the top and bottom engine cowlings
Next up to thin the walls and test fit some engine mounts. They should give strength to the structure enough to continue
with the build as per the instructions. Must say this academy kit is very impressive and like their p-39 pretty well fitting.
This could get complicated so I'll start a build log in case I overrun the deadline.

Update: Build log started

Good luck on that. Anything in 72nd scale is intimidating to me. Something that involved is reserved for 48th or larger. I do believe you will impress us, as always.

I am sorry JP, but it is going to be a mucky old P-47 from me, the Trumpeter Bubbletop in 1/32 to be exact... Now should I paint it NMF, or aluminium? NMF... gulp!

Sorry Guys and Gals, but i'm going to gracefully bow out of this campaign

Unfortunately due to work and home life my modelling time is limited and I have to finish a Phantom FGR1 build for a client and my P-47 for that Campaign Build before the end of the year.

It's my own fault as I started to re-scribe the Hasegawa B-17 I had planned for this build but it'll take too long for me to get right and time is limited.

You never know I may get involved if circumstances change

Wait a sec! I just looked in mystash and as well as the B-17F 'Memphis Belle' kit I have the limited edition B-17G Nose Art kit that is packed to the rafters with 8th Air Force Planes!!

So no boring old 'Memphis Belle', but one of six aircraft covered by the kit, 2 NMF, 3 Olive Drab and one that is half OD and half NMF!! Might go with that one yet. Depends on how good I get the seams etc for the NMF.

Tally Ho!!

nice one warreni I'll be flying escort for you with Old Crow.
After a bit of scare where I thought I'd lost the wings but found them
,under the toolbox, yes I am a messy worker.
I started on the cockpit ather butchering the fuselage to get the cowlings off.
The eduard etched seat is really finely detailed should look great when primed.
Nothing worth photographing yet. The use of a soldering iron would been
handy but CA will have to do.
Also corrected my mistake when cutting the cowling open and bevelled the cowling
edges so they look thin. Will detail the inside of them too. Once I've got the fuselage
and wings built I'll have a stable base to start scratching the firewall and engine mounts.

Question:
If the engine is run up (under maintainence as this has the engine exposed)
will/could the flaps and gear doors go to the up position?

Once a Mustang has hydraulic pressure the gear doors will go up. The only reason they droop open is due to having no non-return valve in the hydraulic line and once the engine is shut dow, stopping the hydraulic pump, the pressure slooowwwly bleeds out of that line and the doors open.

They close the doors after gear extension is complete to prevent damage to the doors due to FOD. It may also help in cross wind landings as the doors would act as a sort of ventral rudder if left extended. The less effect you have from cross winds the better in my experience..

B-17 progress - Interior constructed and painted. I forgot how basic 1/72 cockpits are!
- Lots of little windows glued into the fuselage. Fit not fantastic.

Just about to go and glue the fuselage halves together.

So I figured. That gives me the excuse for a little less butchery of this nice little kit.
I may buy one to build normally without all this fannying about. Why must I always
make thing a little more difficult?
It is a serious character flaw. But perhaps some good will come of it.
You're already way ahead of me Warren. Good luck!

"Tony" of the 5th ERS.
I'm using the Tamiya Razorback kit, Loon models dinghy set, Eagle Strike decals and Eduard seatbelts.
Made a start on the cockpit, photos as and when

I will follow this with pleasure, Nige. It would be too egocentric to do it myself!

there is no way I'll get time to do old crow with the covers off. So I got a little airfix p-51b to do in it's stead.
I'll do it like this

As the kit kill markings are awful and it'll teach me how to mask the codes and invasion stripes properly
to avoid the dread see-through the decals problem. Before I do it for real on Old Crow.

Hi all
I mostly lurk over on Armorama being a clanky, clank tankie builder ,
I found, on a rainy Sunday afternoon (with a bit of help from Google) that there was a P-51D with the nickname "Torchy" ,mmmmm, a plane with my name on,thats a must!!!.
Now armed with the Tamiya 1/48 kit ,AeroMaster decal sheet(48-634),Eduards ED49216 pre painted cockpit set and some Alclad2,its about time I built one of them there wingiethingies .
I've looked at Lampie's, Alclad Adventures and it looks quite fun!!
I'm going to start this in the next week so be prepared for some silly questions
Will post some progress pics soon.
