When I promissed to have this submitted by the weekend, I really had good intentions. A few hours later I was hit with an upper respiratory infection that became pneumonia. But is is an effective way to drop 20 pounds. Not reccomended, but effective.
But the good news is that I have made a recovery and submitted it this morning, to run June 1, 2009 until December 31, 2009.

I've been thinking about this back and forth, but sometime I will have to build the P 51 Twilight Tear, currently flying from Duxford. This might be the right spot.
It'll most likely be Tamiyas 1:48, but does anyone know if there are markings to find for that one, or if I'll have to go with Big Beautiful Doll and make name and code letters some other way?

Glad to hear it is submitted, Carl. I will look forward to join this one.
I have to do some research first to find an aircraft from the eight airforce, but that only makes it more fun.

Has this come up for enlistment yet? I can never find the enlistment page before it becomes official.

Ahhh, what the heck. I have enlisted!
I have to hone my code-letter-masking-skills, so I better join in. It will be the P 51 D Twilight tear of Duxford.

I am in as well. I have never made a Mustang in 1/48, so this will be a good excuse.

Carl, one question please. I didn't see any specific info on what years were allowed for this one. Is this just gonna be the 8th during WWII or could it also mean modern jets of the 8th?

I have been trying to find a P-38 kit for this campaign, but I cannot seem to find one which already has some decals for 8th air force in it.
As far as I can find out the 1st, 31st and 14th Fighter groups flew the P-38 in the 8th Air force, but I have not succeed in finding a suitable kit. Any suggestions?
Otherwise I will have to go for a Mustang. There is no shortage of 8th Air force Mustang kits.

Hello Jepser,
Academy has a kit in 1/72 and Minicraft in 1/48 also some older boxings of the Monogram kit (The one with the actual model on the box lid) also have ETO decals. Another suggestion, how about some aftermarket decals? There is quite a number of them still around. Here is some Aeromaster Decals you should be able to find.
1. Lightnings in drab battle dress II 48084
2. 20th Fighter Group 48289
3. Lightnings in the sky part II 48350 and 72162
Hope this helps,
Brian

As my History masters always told me (and I never heeded them). Read the question carefully.
From the campaign page
The Rules and Regs
1. The build must be of an actual aircraft that was assigned to the Mighty Eighth. The aircraft must appear as it did when assigned to the Eighth Air Force. Any era of the Eighth Air Force will be allowed.
Lets see some shiny jets among these mucky old thunderbolts and mustangs
:)

Yep, you have a good point JP. Reading has always been my strong point......however paying attention to detail is my downfall.
If I can find the right decals I'd like to do an F-15.

Thanks, Brian. I considered aftermarket decals as well. Hannants has quite a lot in stock. But I was trying to avoid buying aftermarket decals.
I was planning on doing 1/48. How is the Minicraft kit? 60ties? 70ties details? Have you build it? I have seen it is still in stock a few places on the net.

Hello Jesper,
I have only built the Monogram kit (Which I really don't think is all bad) I have a friend that has the P-38 squadron book with model reviews and I know its in there. I'll get back to you this weekend.
Sincerely,
Brian

I asked because I have an F-15 I'd like to build, but I'm having a heck of a time finding out which fighter groups are or have been assigned to the 8th. I have to build something outta the stash so buying anything else is out of the question.

Hello Jesper,
The review in Detail and Scale for the Minicraft P-38L indicates;
Engraved panel lines, cockpit detail is average, trim tabs should be removed (for an L), sanding /filling required by wing root, wheel well detail less than Hasegawa kit but present, tires are vinyl and smooth (no tread), No gun camera for the inboard pylon (correct for a J though). Ordinance includes 10 rockets and 2 rocket trees (for an L version not J), 2 165 gallon drop tanks and 2 bombs. Overall parts breakdown is less complicated than Hasegawa and assembly is easier.
It also recommended aftermarket cockpit and wheels.
Hope this helps you.

If anybody is going to be in or near Savannah, Georgia, be sure to check out the Might Eighth Air Force Museum. It is well worth the 2-4 hours you will need to get through the whole thing. The little Restaurant serves up some real good Country Cooking also. Yummmm-yum

I have found my build for this campaign. The P-38H/J. I bought the Hasegawa kit while visiting Budapest in the weekend. It has an option for a P-38 of the 55th FG. Perfect for this campaign.
The aircraft in the instructions is a H version. I have only been able to find one picture and two colour profiles of this aircraft, but I will keep looking. If anybody can help with additional photos it would be great.
The aircraft details are:
Lt.Col. Jack S Jenkins, HQ 55th Fighter Group. P-38H 42-67074 CG-J “Texas Ranger”.

Jesper, I built that kit a couple of years ago for a campaign here. When it's finished it is a beautiful aircraft, but you will be tempted to smash it into pieces while building it. There were numerous fit problems with the one I built and I spent around 50 hours filling and sanding it since mine was going to be a NMF aircraft. Don't let me scare you though, as I said, when it's finished it is a really beautiful aircraft.
