wlecome to the hangar torchy.

I'm glad I got the little airfix p-51b kit.
Sure it's raised panel lines and no cockpit. But a bit of stryene strip,
a seat stolen from an academy p-51, and you've got a nice little cockpit.
another few minutes gouging out the oil cooler intake. Build it gear up,
as the is no detail in there either. And all of a sudden in an hour or
two you've got a grey plastic mustang ready for some paint.
I needed a session that like to get me moving again. The fit is really excellent
better than the modern trumpeter I'm in the middle of too.
The only thing extra I'll add is smash mold a canopy. After all I want to
see my homemade cockpit. I'll post pics once i find the camera.

A little more detail added to the pit and a coat of green (humbrol 80 super enamel I got free seems a decent paint)
Also Lt Henry Brown got a grey undercoat.
Sorry for the shaky pictures, OK in small res, but very little light 1/8 sec exposure and couldn't find the tripod.

airfix p-51bairfix p-51b

And just to show how good the fit is.. look no glue
airfix p-51b

I knew you wouldnt be able to resist the P-47 decals Torchy!, and that Mustangs looking like a nice easy build Jaypee
I've made a start on my contribution to the group build.
Cockpits finished and fitted..
I drilled through the rudder pedals and added a set of Eduard seatbelts and a bit of representative wiring at the rear of the instrument panel.

And the main airframe is now together and primed.

Hi all
Nice looking stang Jaypee I'm looking forward to building a 1/72 a/c for the 1st time in donkeys years when my P-47 turns up.
Nige, lovely job on that 47 so far mate, very nice
Well heres a few pics of my stang so far,my 1st a/c build in many a moon!!!
I've used the Eduard set 49216,I've never come across these pre coloured pe sets before, bloody marvelous!!!!
I made the oxy hose from copper wire wrapped around a thicker copper core, but now it's fitted it looks overscale!,oh well live and learn!, the seat braces were retro fitted and look a bit odd.
As I normally build AFV's my paints are quite limited to a/c use,so I used Tamiya XF-4 yellow green for the interior(is that taboo?????)

Hope you like, please point out any errors!!!

Looks great Torchy. I've been adding the eduard PE set to the 1/72 Academy stang that I'm slicing up.
It really makes a great difference.

The p-51 cockpit is usually dark green for early P-51B and eariler (Old Crow) or interior green for later ones
(non camouflaged like hunhunter which would have been supplied in NMF). Makes me realise why
the eduard PE is so dark.

Probably not as straightforward as that even, depending on factory, field repairs yadda yadda yadda.
I'm no authority on it so check your refs Or better still dont worry about it you've done a good job of the cockpit. The hose might be overscaled but you have artistic license to remedy this
Some info if you are interested.
http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004/02/stuff_eng_interior_colours_us_part2.htm

A few hours tonight allowed me to paint the underside of hunhunter with humbrol polishing alum, and the
upper surfaces humbrol dark green (not OD). According to some refs they used RAF paint to camo
this NMF supplied aeroplane in the field. Looks darker than OD in the photo.
Next will be masking the invasion stripes. For such a simple scheme there is a lot of masking.
All good practice for the "old crow" build. Pic once the paint is dry.

Looking great Torchy, especially for your first aircraft

Personally I use Tamiya XF-5 Flat green for my US aircraft interiors as by the time I've added Klear and weathered it has the right shade of darkness (well to my eyes anyway)

This is the one I did for my 1/32 P-47 recently

Aye thats a good Dull Dark Green for a p-47. P-51 either that or interior green.
Well enough about that. Here is the first coat of RAF Dark Green on Hunhunter.
img_0530.jpg
and the NMF underside
img_0531.jpg
I've polished different panels in different directions to pick the light different but highres images are not kind to me. Looks like a little
sanding and filling yet. On the air intake and lower cowling panels especially.
Blades snipped off as it will be in flight and I'm not a fan of plastic discs or the PE blur blades. Best thing is leave the blades on and photograph them spinning IMHO, this is the next best. I'll smear some gray to see if it looks like a spinner .. erm spinning.

Thats a couple of very nice Mustangs coming together there fellas.
I'm planning on a P-51B for Aces 2

Managed to do a bit more on my Razorback. Undersides painted and faded.

The lights not so good today and it looks lighter in the photos than it acually is.

Big ol ugly jug. in ugly OD. Loving the look of it. Tony is really war weary.

Got the AB out last night. To do the invasion stripes. It didn't spray any paint. Darn.
I'd never stripped it right back before. God it was full of crud. 5 mins had the AB
broken, cleaned, and reassembled. Good as new.
Here are the results. I know I shouldn't have but I couldn't resist unwrapping it.

Hi there everyone,

After completeing my P-61 Black Widow for the "Rumblings in the Dark" campain on Friday I came across this campain, needless to say I signed up in a flash.

Let me start by saying, there are some fantastic builds going on right now, I can't wait to see the B-17's come along.

I actually hit the ground running, I am going to build........................yes hold on...............another P-51 Mustang. Col. John Landers mount "Big Beautiful Doll" of the 78th Fighter Group. Marking will be from the summer of 1945.

This is the Tamiya kit in 1/48th. I will build it OOB with the addition of Edwards PE seatbelts.

Like I was saying I actually got some work done over the weekend.

I have managed to get the majority of the coskpit completed.

As always comments/critics are more than welcomed.

I appologize in advance for the lack of inprocess pic's.

Needless to say I had a blast building this famous Mustang
I will be following the remainder of this campain with great interest.

@klimmer Looks like a fun build and plenty of interesting markings on it.

I've been a little swamped with
life/work recently but I did get the stripes stickers put on Hunhunter. I brush painted the black
and I wished I'd been patient and got the airbrush out as they are not so neat and had a fair bit
of touching up after. The airfix decals went on fine no silvering and hugged down nicely with some
microsol. Omitted the no step decals and the victory/nameplate decal as it was removed for d-day.
Got the starboard side codes back to front. But I'm only showing the port side so you'll never know.

Wow tough crowd. Well for what its worth here is hunhunter finished.
A little panel lining done with acrylics, no exhaust staining as the photo doesn't show it.

In flight just as it returns from patrol over Normandy. The only thing I'll add is too experiment
with blurring around the spinner, but it might ruin it so for now its done.

JP ,

Your Hun-hunter has turned out very nicely indeed, as for the exhaust staining, I left it off my build as well. I could not find any pictures of P-51's with noticeable staining.

Great build.

P-51s carried the standard star and bar on the underside of the starboard wing. It was only really the P-47s that had the extra one ( and oversized insignia) added due to the similarity with the FW190. Naturally, there may have been exceptions to this!
As far as the ariel running through the canopy, I didnt think this was the case with the P-51D. I presume you mean running through the canopy in the same way as an FW190 ariel?

Hi Nige
Thanks mate,I'm a bit of a thickie on these wingie thingies.
The decal instruction sheet don't show the underside star and bar ,but every pic I've seen has it!,also it shows an ariel 190 style, but I can't find any pics of it,so it 's not getting one!!!
More pics soon
