To me the double bogie undercarriage marks it as a handley page.
No idea which model though. The HP Gunbus I'll call it

Hi JP

Tony got it with the 1913-vintage Sopwith. There was also a bomber version with a modified nacelle.

All the best

Ok, lets have a quickie! Graeme, are you out there?

Which italian pilot had a connection to cars, and what's the connection?

Is it Francesco Barracca? The Ferrari emblem Cavallino Rampante was originally the personal emblem of Barracca, and Enzo Ferrari used it with the permission of Barracca's mother on his race cars (Alfa Romeos until 1948 then Ferraris).

That is absolutely correct Gabor. I was afraid this would be fast, and it was.

Thank you. As I could not find a suitable photo of another skeleton in the wardrobe of the aircraft industry, I am asking a simple one as well:

What did a Boeing 777 do on Nov. 9., 2005? Why is the person of the pilot interesting?

Wasn't that a non stop around the world flight, with a lady at the helm?

It was not exactly an around-the-world trip. Yes the pilot was a woman. Actually it was a commercial flight distance record, 21.602km between London and Hong Kong, taking the Atlantic-trans American-Pacific route. The pilot was Suzanna Darcy-Hennemann (now test pilot of Boeing).

Over to you Tony!

I'm sorry I've been a bit slow here, but here's the next question.

Straight and simple - what's the airline?

Oh, me major stoopid! I didn't see that one, but yup, you can go in the corner with Graeme ! A big Ni Hao to both of you.

The chinese, by the way, have a way of weathering their 1:1 airliners. I've taken a pic or two over there, to learn how dirt spreads. Sometimes you wonder what the combined weight of the wing stains is. Pure art really....

Ok I cheat at monopoly I admit it.

Is it all the air pollution that brings up the staining?

I've got a little detective work for you but the picture must wait until tomorrow.

I'll also be away all next week so it'll give you plenty of time to work it out.
Cheating and coping answers is positively encouraged

What has happened here, where has it happened, and who nearly had a Buddy Holly moment?

Hi JP.

The air is not as fresh in urban China as in the scandinavian north or scottish highlands, and the Yelow River is not as much yellow as it is tan brown. Think Marseilles #14.
But I don't think that alone is the explanation. I think they have different priorities when it comes to maintenance too. Function wins over looks and appearance every time. It's only a bliss that the same doesn't go for the stewardesses

Li Lin (Means plum tree, sort of, and is the closest the chinese come to pronounce Lillen, which means shorty in swedish)

At last one of these that I think I have the answer for!!!

1. The plane has tripped over
2. It has happened at the end of the runway - but the water was too cold for it to jump all the way in.
3. Darn this bit could be hard....... Buddy Holly - rock singer...mmmmmmm.. I know - the hostess she would have had the microphone up to her lips telling everybody what a wonderful trip they were about to have. So she was probably singing something along the lines of "HOLY SH@T" when the plane first tripped.

In fact I bet a few of the people on board wished they had worn brown underpants that day.

Brian, if it was up to me, you'd win, but I'm a bit concerned about the irish connections.

I can't figure them out myself, so I'll have to pass.

Tony

(And JW, you'd be insulted deep into your irish bones if you knew all the things I've Googled to solve this)

start with the basics what plane is it? Did any of those crash? Any of them got any thing to do with gods own country?
I'm going to be flying in one of these on Friday! To the same airport, hope its not raining and the tide is out.

Still no skill with that, but I'll cross my fingers for your flight.

A Shetlander I met on Kastrup in Copenhagen comes to mind. He ordered two double Gammeldansk snaps when the boarding call came, and when I asked why, he replied "when flying home you've got to be drunker than the pilot!"

story it has to tell.

Hi again JP

Courtesy of our best friend Wikipedia:

"Sligo Airport.... A current safety concern surrounds the fact that the runway ends just metres from Sligo Bay. In addition, the peninsula upon which the airport is situated is less than 2 km (1.2 mi) long. In 2003, a Euroceltic Airways Fokker F27 aircraft carrying the band Aslan overshot the runway and the nose went into sea. The accident caused no casualties."

That took some heavy sleuthing! LOL!

Small world Tony I have a Scottish friend who lives in kastrup. He is from the hebrides though not
shetland.

Yep it is quite a landing coming in to sligo! Just like tony says it is better to be
drunker than the pilot.
I'm off there tomorrow so I'm glad to see it solved before I go. See y'all next week.
West of Ireland no work, no internet, just fresh Atlantic air, surf and pints of stout.

Hi JP

Have a great trip - it sounds idyllic!

Next question - what's this wind-tunnel model?

The tail reminds me of various Bell aircraft. Is it a Bell of some description?
