imho this must be a Nieuport, obviously a prototype exempt of any markings, probably 1918 or postwar (big ailerons). The spinner looks like it's stolen/borrowed from a Morane or a Bristol but the fuselage-topwing struts are a recurring Nieuport feature albeit without the usual hard connection with the flight controls. i've had a look for photographic evidence but to no avail

Hi Jan,

No, not a Nieuport. I have removed a national marking from the photograph. Photograph was taken on June 25th, 1915.

It looks like a Morane-Saulnier BB for me but I don't understand yet why I see a single-seater on your picture...

Certainly has some similarities Michal, but this aircraft's wings have dihedral, whereas the Morane-Saulnier BB's wings are flat, and this is a lot smaller. The spinner on this one has a central opening for cooling the engine.

A big clue- the aircraft was designed and built at Farnborough.

That is a clue. SE4a? the cabane struts look right. not so sure about the massive spinner though.

Henceforth to be known as the Shane Warne

J-P has it- S.E.4a. This is the first prototype- subsequent ones didn't have the spinner.

I think it was originally designed to have a perspex canopy (hence the high back behind the cockpit), but no pilot would fly it with the canopy in place. Later prototypes had lower backs.

Course the 'Experts' also declared that soon dogfighting will be impossible because the planes would fly so fast that it would suck the air out of the pilot's lungs.

sorry nick no. I'll give a clue as this is a total bugger actually.
It would normally be a single seater.

Hi JP

Drat! - I nearly plumped for a Czech CS-199 this morning, but the pic I found had a standard front canopy. Now I've found one with the sliding canopy.
