Hi all
We are upto 17 campaign members so far so a big thanks for your support.
I think I have made my mind up and going ahead with my project to produce a Spitfire PR Mk XlX [PS890}in 1/48 scale. I have ordered Academys 1/48 Spitfire Mk XlVc and Quickboosts Spitfire MkXlV cowling and exhaust. Not sure if the exhausts will be correct for this version though. Now to find a contra rotating prop.

Hi all
Nice to see we are now numbering 19 enlistees. Thats great!
Just received my Academy 1/48th scale Spitfire XlV
Photobucket
and Quickboosts resin cowling and exhaust pipes for the kit.
Photobucket
Unfortunetly the exhausts are oval in shape, were as the PR XlX [PS890] I want to model exhausts are round . A good friend of mine said the engine and prop of PS890 is from a Shackleton. Having said that the quality of the casting is superb and I am sure they will be used for another project. Now to find that contra rotating prop and some round cross sectioned exhausts.

Hi

I believe I am the 21st enlistee of this noble adventure. I'm not the most capable builder, but, I'm in it for fun.
In my stash, I've counted sixteen different Spitfire/Seafire kits, so I doubt I have a problem with the physical advancement. Obviously, my mental state may be an issue, considering my habit of collecting kits.

None-the-less, here I am in the campaign. I have time to think about what build I will do. The only assurance I can give you is that I'll try my best, and I mean to have fun. Hope you all do the same.

Hi Guy
Welcome to this noble cause, yeah 21 enlistees so far is amazing. I like your attitude , it is for fun!! Wow 16 Spitfire/Seafire kits! Maybe we ought to have a special commendation or mention in dispatches for the person with the most unbuilt and built Spits in their collection.

Mark I enlisted after looking for the campaign on the wrong page for 15 minutes. I need a new set of eyes. Hey D. let me look in my stash there may be a Revell 1/48 Spit MkI that you can have (the kit stinks) Oh wait I remember why I did not build it, it is so warped that the box is curved. Sorry D. Let me look again.

Gents,

I am definitely in! I have kits/conversions etc. in 1/48 for every production Spitfire fighter mark, so I'll stand ready to fill in a gap, or maybe more than one And a couple of 1/32 up my sleeve as well!

Can hardly wait to get started!

I found an old ICM Mk VIII in the stash and all I need is to find some decals then I am in business. This will be my entry, US desert markings in the African campaign. Well D. I guess the Revell Spit Mk. I will go back and gather more dust and warp some more.

Hi Rob
Welcome to the party. What scale are your projects? With the number of entries coming in so far I think we could adopt Air Vice-Marshal Mallory big wing on this one.

Hi all,

Against my better judgement I've signed up. At this point in time I have no idea what I'll be building.

Given that this GB starts a massive 9 months away, can I ask that the campaign leader sends out reminders closer to the time? Most likely by that time I'll have forgotten I've enlisted

Hi Rudi
Welcome to the campaign. Good idea Rudi , I will be sending little reminders every now and again up until the start of this campaign. I will send huge reminders a few weeks before the campaign.

Hi Tim and Gents

I have not modelled a kit for about 30+ years so I will have to take it slow
My passion and love are Photo Reconnaissance Spits and Mossies and as Tim knows I have quite alot of reference/research; so if anyone needs some reference on PR stuff let me know.

I have decided to build a spit straight out of the box first , the Airfix Mk1 as I want to cut my teeeth before trying an extensive project..

The 4 Spits are all 48 scale, the kits are:-

Airfix (2 bladed prop)
Special Hobby (Malta Defender)
'Revagawa' (2 x Mk IX as they are the Hasegawa tooled Revell boxing which include the Mk VIII components)

The Mk I will be OOB (Airfix)
The Mk Vc also OOB with 4 x 20mm cannon (Special Hobby)
The Mk VIII's will be in RAAF markings:-

I now have the Eduard Spitfire 22/24 (48 scale) which I'll include on this campaign build.

1. as that flown by Bobby Gibbs, with PE and Superscale Decals
2. as 'HavagoJoe' as 3 tone Green bird with a White tail also with Superscale Decals (as per the pic below {which was built some years ago as part of the RAAF Contract})

Note: The older OTAKI kit [now Airfix] with AeroMaster Decals.

Note: The Superscale sheet that will be used for the 2 x RAAF subjects.

Hi Rob
You are going to be busy early next year! I have been tempted to acquire the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Mk22/24, but the price has put me off. Maybe a self birthday present. Havago Joe looks superb. Any idea what the story is about the pink elephant? The white leading edge and tail makes for a really distinctive finish. The teeth on the Superscale sheet looks great and suite the Mk Vlll. Nice one Rob and looking forward to seeing your builds.

Tim,

The Eduard boxing of the Spitfire 22/24 is an Airfix tooled kit, that includes an Aires resin interior, coloured PE and masks, but if you just want the subject of the 22/24 the Airfix kit is still listed as an available kit.

As with 'HavagoJoe' the Mk VII A58-517 of 79 Sqn RAAF, I believe these aircraft were striped to BMF during the middle of '44, when stationed at Darwin, but prior to the squadron being deployed north to Moritai, they were repainted, I don't know the full issue as to the 'Pink Elephant' motif forward of the windscreen on the port fuselage. The aircraft did fly on opps coded only as UP which was later changed to UP F. The white tail / wing leading edge is an RAAF order of ID for all forward operational squdrons, but not all RAAF Spit's had white tails or leading edges of the main wings.
There are some interesting features on several Aircraft the RAAF flew in opps as to how their leaders were identified when airbourne, as with CR-C (A58-484) it had 2 white and a black rear fuselage band along with 2 black bands on a white spinner, RG-V of 457 Sqn (A58-602) had 56 inch upper wing roundals, a narrow cord white wing leading edge, ZP-G {se pic below} also of 457 Sqn had a smaller shark mouth, as this was the mount of Flt.Lt Compton, which was used to identify him as a flight leader.

To add several options into the marques of the Spitfire, I've added some pix of previous builds with a foot note on all, these are all 48 scale.

Tamiya Mk Vb AeroMaster decals depicting the mount of Don Gentle.

Tamiya Mk's I and Vb The Mk I fuselage married to the Mk Vb wing too make the Mk IIb version that appeared in limited numbers during the later half of the Bof B and the Mk Vb fuselage married to the Mk I wing too make the Mk Va.

Hasegawa Mk IXc kit Using the Mk VIII options as per the box, with Tasman decals - A contract build.

Tamiya MkVb Trop Depicted as A58-163 the only type to fly opps with the RAAF in the Pacific - This is a contract build for a client in China.

Hi Rob
Thanks for posting the pictures and the information. It great to have Spitfires that are a bit different to the usual northern european/med/north africa schemes. I have made the Airfix Spitfire 22/24 before, [one of Airfix's best kits me thinks] but I fancied the racing colours of the Eduard offering.
have a good day.
