I'm in with an Old ESCI molding in 1/48
ESCI F-4C/D 1/48 by mawz_models, on Flickr
I'll most likely be using the XtraDecals sheet shown for an early F-4D in LGG/White despite the kit having slotted stabs.
As a question, does anybody know when the centreline tank came into use? I'm not sure if it would be a valid store for a ~1966 F-4D on alert.

The Revell new tool Phantoms are really nice, I'm planning on doing their RF-4E as well. Just watch out for the decals, the early boxings had those horrid, matt decals in them.

Well, I at least slathered some paint on mine last night......

Very cool color scheme, Richard! Looking forward to see it finished.
Nice choice of kit, Adam. I have a ton of these in my stash, but never gotten around to building one. Looking forward to follow your build.
Please share any findings during the build if possible.

Hi everyone,
I'm going to do the new Academy F4-B. I'm doing it SOB since it's been several years since I worked on a kit. I'll post pic's as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Just to liven things up a bit, I've got at least a small bit of progress to report!

Jesper:
Rob/Dragon164 is in fact building the same basic kit in its F-4E guise. The only differences are in the forward under-fuselage section and presence of a nose extension. The kit was engineered to allow pretty much any USAF thick-wing Phantom to be built if you have the right sprues (it's got the wrong tail tip for a Naval Phantom).
It's a pretty simple kit to build. unfortunately my ESCI decals have expired, so no instrument panels to be seen in the (simple) cockpit.
ESCI F-4C/D 1/48 by mawz_models, on Flickr
It builds up very quick and the only fit issue to be seen is at the joint between the wing and the forward fuselage under section, where a large gap is present. I'll need to fill that with some styrene strip and sand to shape.

Of course that didn't stop Esci from trying to flog the beast as a Naval Phantom anyway...

ANd I'm doing a tad of filling. Not much required except one underside gap which helpfully turned out to be the same size as my spare styrene strip

You guys are fast!
I made just a little progress, cleaning and fixing some parts, and dry fit to check accuracy. The Kit´s quite good, but it´s not falling together. Have to fill the holes in the Wings too, because this one will not have weapons.

Thomas! Looks like a really nice kit, the engraved detail in the cockpit is something I wish my Hasegawa kits had!

My first sub-assemblies are almost there! I decided to "kitbash" the Aires and the Eduard Brassin F4-E bang seats (I didn't fancy the cushions on the Eduard seats - too smoth and wrinkle free).
Some minor detail to add, then on to the rest of the cockpit! Yes, this build is going to take a while...
First time with PE seatbelts. Fiddly indeed (and I did not use all the parts)!
Cheers! // PolarBear

Adam - don't know if its a trick of the camera, but the forward fuselage on your Phantom looks like its pointing slightly to the left?
Bjorn - OUTSTANDING bang seats! Proper little works of art they are

Hi there! Looks likes theres several nice build going on here.
I'm also joining the campaign. I have just completed my last exams for this year so finnaly i have some time to build. I hadn't planned to build a phanthom but i picked up the new academy one and just coudn't resist it. The plan was to build it OOB but i have bought the same bangseat that Björn got, Eduard. Otherwise i'm planing on adding some scratch built details to increase the level of details.
Enough talk here are some pics:
The cockpit is painted according to Academys instructions but i think it looks a little dark, what do you think?
And finally some extra details in the wheel wells. I havent looked to much on refrence pics as the goal is to learn the ways mostly.
Hope you like it!
Jakob
EDIT: Just notice the ugly blob of goo, it's blu-tack

Perspective error rather than a warped nose thankfully. I'm holding the model a little crookedly.

hello folks, that last Phantom that I build was about 30 years ago when Revell had their four 1/72 Blue Angles Phantoms so here is what my entry will be
Don't know about the technical stuff but the box say its a Phantom II S and it come with US Marine markings so that will be what I attempt hope its correct

You'll need to search out a proper Navy cockpit; the kit is the old Esci mould which only ever had the Air Force cockpit.

I'm back, after spending 2 weeks in northern Chile (with some spotting of their F-16A in Antofagasta AFB), and some weeks before with high work pressure my spanish F4C has its body closed. due to the bad weather this spring in northern Spain I cannot use my airbrush as this cold and wet ambient is not good for the paint (I paint in a garage with no heating system)

Thanks Jess but the cockpit is so small that I think it will be real hard to tell the difference

One look at the rear cockpit consoles is all it would take; Navy Phantoms didn't have them. The right side was a vertical wall from the canopy sill right to the floor, and the left side had a huge box taking up much of the available space between the canopy and the console location.
Right side
Left Side
In 1/72 it would not be very difficult to duplicate this with plastic card.

Well half way there on this rather poor Phantom.
I must say this has been a poor effort on my part with a poor model but god bless Airfix anyway.
Anyway having nearly lost the will to live
I can remember why I didn't model jet aircraft.
Anyway up will get this phantom finished and be a better modeler for it.
Regards all

We have a saying where I work Martin - you can't educate pork!
A good paint job and she won't look so bad from 6 feet. Just don't park her next to a Hasegawa
