Greetings all,

Here is a build of the Roden 1:32 SSW D.III kit using the Loon early production conversion set #32006. I want to approach this build pretty much as a straight conversion. So here are the relevant links from the kit reviews.

Kit #610

Set #32006

To begin the usual clean up of all parts is begun.

Picking up from the review on the Loon set parts we see the match that needs to be made. The early SSW D.III had slightly longer wings with unbalanced ailerons. Also see the header image above.

Crop the kit wings and addd the resin wing tips. Matching the slots for the ailerons is a good place to start.

After you make your cuts, drill matching holes in the kit wing and add your brass rod. (Use only brass rodd when including resin components.) You can make the process go quicker if you use cyano by including cyano-accelerator.

Before cutting into the resin trace the pilot hole locations ansd stay within the border when drilling on its edge.

To match the kit aileron cut outs with the lay of the Loon ailerons I had to add some plastic shims. See the white sheet stock.

Sanding down the shim and the combined surfaces with a heavier grit then go back and use a tighter grit.

The ribtapes are indistinct on the Roden kit wings. I will add the HGW wing rib tapes.

The header image shows us the locations for the rib tapes even on the ailerons.

Hi Stephen.
I will be following this build!
I have a CMR 1:72 Schuckert D.III in my stash and look forward to seeing your build (1:32) and wing lozenge decals.
Any leads on a 1:72 lozenge supplier?
Richard.

Hello Stephen, Nice one – this is one build I will follow with great interest. I have two of these in my stash – and plan to make one of them as the early version.

Hear you one that one Mikael . I just need a few more items and then I will be starting my some time this winter . It's not bad that no one makes a resin or even etch seat to replace the kit one .

Sorry for the hijack Stephen ...

Now here is a bit of fun. The resin kit full ring cowlings don't have cooling slots. But I am sure they had them.

Can you see it?

Yes , there are cooling vents on the bottom of the cowl .

Bottom center of the cowl there should be three long cooling slot's divided down the middle forming six . Off to both sides there is a circle hole for cooling as well . You can make out the left cooling vent in the photo .

Yup – I can see them as well!

Here's a question: – I read somewhere that Dan San Abbott once claimed that "all" early versions of the D.III had the underside 5 colour lozenge covering on the over sides of the wings as well.

Your image here, Stephen, seems to contradict this?

Best Regards

Mikael

Greetings Michael,
Here is one of Dan's comments on the subject. from 2009.

Quoted Text

A. When the SSW D.III was originally issued in early 1918 to Jasta 12, 13, 15 and 19, they were covered with the light pattern on top surfaces of the wings, elevator, rudder, wheel covers, cabane and interplane struts. The under surfaces of the wings and elevator were covered with plain unprinted fabric and plain tapes.

B. When the SSW D.III were reissued in August 1918, they were rebuilt and re-engined. The upper surfaces of the wings and elevator, rudder, wheel covers, cabane and interplane struts were covered with intermediate dark pattern printed fabric with matching taping. The under surfaces of the wings and elevator were covered with the light pattern with matching taping.

This discussion started with Ltn. Walter Göttsch's SSW D.III 8346/17, which was in the early SSW D.III configuration A above."

From 2004

Quoted Text

From photos I have studied show the early SSW D.III machines were covered with the 5 color light (lower) pattern on the tops of the wings, elevator, rudder and wheel covers. The under surfaces were covered plain unprinted linen fabric. The fuselage, fin and stabilizer were stained a reddish brown.

I have seen the images that Dan used and I understand his draw to the conclusions he made. BUT I have the high Resilution images from Jasta 19 pilot, Ltn. A.Rahn's photo album. These I have used here concerning Goettsch's SSW D.III 8346/17. They clearly show the lozenge is on both surfaces. Dan's sumation was made using Pete Grosz' 2nd or 3rd generation photos (copies of copies). While I can't speak for all of the early production SSW D.III machines I can say that D.8346/17 was covered in typical intermediate dark 5 colour "lozenge" camouflage in the usual locations. Now the left ailerons appear different, I believe due to the location on the fabric bolt that they were cut from.
