Not starting until 2015 I hope I remember that i enlisted in this campaign. I hope there will be reminders to all of us who have enlisted in the campaign. Good side of the late start time is that my modeling skills will have improved quite a bit so I should be able to turn out a good model, even in a diorama setting of some sort.

I have never looked at a vac or resin kit. Can anyone suggest a 1/48 kit that would good to practice with before the campaign?

I would suggest something simple for your first vac kit. Bill Koster's kits are excellent, and include everything you'll need to finish a great model. (That site doesn't carry them anymore, but it'll give you an idea what's available. Contact Bill directly for ordering details: wkoster22(at)att.net.

Many of his kits are conversions for the popular Monogram bombers, which can get you started working with vac and resin parts while still building (much of) a familiar injection-moulded kit.

Getting a little more complicated, the Wings 48 line of kits is good, but you typically only get vac parts so you ought to have a decent spares bin.

One of the absolute best vac brands was Dynavector. Taro-san moved back to Japan several years ago and stopped producing the kits, but you may find them second-hand at swap meets or on evil-bay.

For full resin kits, I like Planet Models. They've got an amazing selection of "Luft '46" kits, plus some really esoteric real aircraft. Here's what you can do with one of their kits.

Jessie, I just realized that my Welsh Models Resin Canadair CC-109 Cosmopolitan is 1:144 scale. After viewing the rules I see the scales range is 1:200 to 1:16 scale. I guess I will have to drop out.

Not at all. 1/144 falls between 1/200 and 1/16 so it's completely eligible.

Just enlisted. Will try to build my first vacuform ever!
Have a Hi-Kit Arado 96 in the pile for so long I completly forgot where and when I bought it...
Looking at the box contents the surface detail is quite good but the resin parts not so good. Will be chalenging for sure, though I'll need some advice as to best cut the parts out of the sheet.

Hi Pedro, there was a Vacuform campaign here a few years ago.
Exactly how to cut out the parts is explained very well there. I learned how to do it from reading this campaign thread.

I also have a build blog of a vacuform C-130, which might be helpful. I have never finished painting that model. august 2012, last time I saw it. Talk about a Hanger Queen. Might have to open that box again soon.

Looking at the last campaign thread I get the felling many modellers had the same "Vac Scare" that I've been suffering for years now, but it was surprising to read many saying that they would be doing another vacuform kit for sure, so it really can't be that hard... (did i really said that ?!)

the Welsh DC-7 kit looks excellent.

The SAS F-DCAL decal is surplus, any one here just shout if you want it, otherwise it will be on ebay in about a week.

Watch out for an "interesting" fit at the wing roots. The supplemental parts which fit to the fuselage sides really benefit from epoxy putty. What I ought to have done with mine was to pack wet putty inside them before I glued them in place. I didn't, and then had to try and cram in in the various cracks afterwards.

I started a build log for mine long ago and far away. I really ought to blow the dust off it...

yeh the instructions are mind blowing. I'll study your work carefully.
The DC-4 wing to fuselage is no picnic either, I had to do some engineering to make that kit work and its far from finished.


The DC-3 was a milk run in comparison to either of these.

People think the challenge of vac is the cutting out, but it aint - that's the fun part, once you figure it out.
Making an airplane out of the parts you wind up with - that may require ingenuity as well as artistry.

edit to add: I wish I had a set of Aeroclub metal props, but it looks like those are now "rare", so I expect to be rubbing out the vac ones, and whittling the spinners from sprue.

Have you tried contacting Welsh Models directly? It looks as though Densil has a supply of props laid in.
