For Russell, I can put aside the work on my bench and build one for him, and I just have a couple of 1/72 scale aircraft on the shelf. I think this is a wonderful idea.

I wondered what 'Siderius' mean't.
Well, strangely, in its present spelling, it has nothing to do with astronomy.
Google has it as a family name, Dutch/German weapons manufacturer
and a medical condition.
There was the Sidereus Nuncis, published by Galileo, though; a pamphlet
on the topography of the moon and star related info.
Personally, Russel A, with maybe a background of his other interests
telescope, Starship Enterprise or an aircraft, with the year 2014
could be explored.
Just my opinion,
Cheers,
Joe

Everyone,
I just want to tell you that your well wishing and participation in this campaign is bringing great comfort and appreciation to Russell's family and friends. His sister wrote
She also asked me to add that Russell's username, Siderius, is from Siderius Nucius (latin for "the starry messenger"), a book by Galileo, after turning his telescope to the night sky and discovering that earth is not the center of the universe.
Russell loved Star Trek. Any models of space vehicles or Star Trek he would enjoy greatly! He was also very proud of his Canadian and Scottish heritage. He was planning to build a Canadian F-101 Voodoo. One of the first events that started our friendship was that I knew of the Canadair CL-215!
Another model he was stoked to build is his Do-217. We spoke about that just a couple of weeks ago; Russell was pondering what camo to paint. He was a fan of Luftwaffe Wassermuster camouflage (He talked me into painting my 1/48 Ju 88 with Wassermuster!) and thinking of it for the 217.
Russell was committed to 1/72, not because he didn't like bigger, but because he wanted to see all of his models together in a constant scale.
Russell's modeling law #1: build what makes you happy!

I love this idea. Wow, this gives me such comfort -knowing he was so highly regarded by those whose opinions he truly valued, in that which he loved so much!!

I posted this in my tribute to Russell, repeating it here for those who haven't seen it.
This is Russell's resting place, up a hill from the airport. The view is almost straight down the runway and clearly visible from the ATC tower, where a friend of Russell works.

Jessica, the ribbon works for me. Anyone who ever see's his name on a profile awards page will remember him.
@Fred - I'm so very happy Russell had a Canadian connection in some way. Even more happy his family is enthusiastic toward the concept. I hope they will see the gallery, or possibly a feature in the future.
As far as the rules I've submitted go; they are few. And they can be bent, twisted and played with. Most important, is to stay within the bounds of the way Russell modelled; enjoying the hobby, and building what makes you feel good. I believe we all knew that about Russell and it is confirmed in Fred's post.

Very sorry to hear this news. Thoughts and prayers with Russell's family and friends. The campaign is a wonderful way to pay tribute, I'd be honoured to participate.

Ribbon is great Jessica.
Well I know I'm building my F-101 Voodoo for this one.
Russell was a good friend, my best wishes to his family and friends.

is there a goal to this campaign? are we going to give a grant to a museum or anything?
Jonathan, my purpose for suggesting the campaign was solely to honour a fallen AeroScale friend. I never knew Russell on any other forum than here, so I believe he was loyal to AeroScale alone.
The goal of the campaign is simply to show respect to a fellow modeller by building in his honour. I can't think of a better way to remember him.

Since seeing the news I had a look at Russell's Gallery, he was obviously a fan of WwII German aircraft and Cold War jets. I have two that fit, a Frog Me Bf110G and a BAC Lightning F6 from Hasegawa. I also like his habit of displaying models in a fraction of diorama, so I will attempt that. I fancy the Lightning. My prayers are with his family.

Boy, you folks sure bring in the big guns to bend the rules, don't you!
OK, this campaign is APPROVED. With the suggested start and finish dates. And if anyone gives me grief about starting two campaigns in March, I'm sending them here.
If you haven't signed up, you can do so here. Let's make it a good one for Russell!

I certainly will, as long as we're all happy with the design. I wouldn't want to force something unwanted on anyone.

Sad news indeed. Russell always had a kind word for everyone's builds.
I know I shared a love of Star Trek kits with him and we had some conversations on those. I'd love to get one of those finished in his honour. If not then I have plenty of 1/72 aircraft that would be a pleasure to build.
He'll be greatly missed by us all.

I would like to join in also. I have a few 1/72 scale things that I could choose to build from as a tribute. Would photos of the completed models be presented to his family? Russell liked Star Trek, would a 1/72 DS9 Rio Grand Long Range Shuttle be allowed?

If you want to build a spaceship, Stephen, then please do.
I made the airplane rule thinking that's all Russell built. Knowing more now, I'm thinking build anything, just so long as you enjoy it. Russell's rule.
@Brent - I know Russell's family is aware of the campaign, and I hope a feature results from it. I'm sure they will see it.

While I'm putting the ribbon up, I'll also tweak the rules to specifically allow Star Trek models. We can share the build with the Model Geek people because Russel liked to post over over there, too. I've put up an announcement on the Model Geek forums.
