because Fred is covering a lot of (sometimes pretty hefty) shipping charges all at once primarily out of his own pocket,
Frankly, I'm surprised to hear this. It's only common sense that those who have asked for a kit would pay the postage up front before it is shipped.
Lets not forget, this campaign is in Russel's memory. It would be sad if something so inconsiderate as a few dollars deflected from that path. This campaign is about honoring a friend.

Hi Ben
I can say from experience with shipping samples that it seldom works that way. It's more a case of after the event - because you don't know what the cost is 'till it's gone.
I hasten to add, my intervention is in no way intended as criticism of anyone (I haven't paid my postage yet - Fred hasn't told me what it tots up to). While we've got contingency plans to help Fred, it's just a heads-up that he is going to face a lot of costs up front due to the understandable wish to mark our respects to Russell.
All the best
Rowan

Same here - the second I know what the postage is going to be, it will be paid - that's the beauty of Paypal.

Well Fred must have been burning the midnight oil getting all this coordinated. Good as his word, Russell's Junkers 290 arrived at my place of business today. (and smartly packaged too. Well done!)
Well I can see Why Russell bought that kit. Its quite impressive. I hope he won't mind if I build is straight OOB. Its big enough as it is. I want to make sure it gets completed on time and the best way for me to do it is not get side tracked with aftermarket doo dads. So, Russell, I'm gonna employ the trusty KISS principle on this one.
One aside. I'm going on holiday (actually honeymoon). I'll be in Spain when the campaign officially begins, but I'll get stuck in as soon as I'm back in the States.
Cheers,
Fred

wow. just caught up with this news, and i'd like to echo whats been said here and on the other thread about russell. i'm another person who only knew him from posts on this forum, but this is quite shocking news, which in a way is a positive thing as it shows what a great contributor to this community he was.
i'm certainly going to take part in the campaign, the next couple of builds i had planned will be postponed and i'll even tidy up my bench.

It gives me joy that the purpose of this campaign is being realized. Even those who may not regularily visit the forums, are acknowledgeing the sad, premature loss of a fellow modeller. These are remembering one of our own.

Russell's model arrived today, thanks Fred,
As I worked on these in the early 70s doing the conversion to tankers at HSA Chadderton I am pleased to get this one. Never built one before, kit looks OK but raised panel lines. What do you expect for a kit introduced in 1983. The refuelling drogues are horrible, will have to do something about those.

No Problem Andrew - I've got 2 of Heritage Aviation's conversion sets (1/48 AAC Longbow Apache and 1/72 Merlin HC.3) and they're both absolutely stunning - recommend them any day!

Kits arrived today. Since they came in the same box I think I will keep George and Judy together for this build. Russell had started the Judy, so I can finish it for him.

Fred, thank you and your helpers for everything you have done. I received the Uri Gagarin / UFO Mystery Ship in the mail yesterday. I'm ready to set up space dock and begin construction in March. There are several options to painting and finishing the kit. I believe that Russell would have gone with the Uri in the as launched finish; I'm thinking light green and light gray.

Hi Group,
I am very glad the models are arriving. I haven't heard from any of my northern neighbors: Ben, Jessica, Terri, et al., have yours' arrived?

Nothing yet. I've been expecting it to arrive sometime soon though.

Fred: Got the Seiran & Mustang today. I think I'll start the Mustang first-Pacific Theatre. Thank you very much.
Does anyone know if there is a mask for the Tamiya Seiran?
Y'all take care,

Even though USPS's tracking said my parcel was stuck in Customs for "closer inspection", it arrived this morning. Great excitement in our house, I got the models, my better half got an American local newspaper to read, and the cat has a new box to hide in. Many, many thanks to Fred for all his hard work and dedication, I'm sure Russell would be proud.
