She sure is looking great, these new Airfix kits are certainly good.
As a suggestion for your next build try the Airfix Mustang,mines on the bench to be decaled,

it's a joy to build with many options.

2 styles of exhausts
2 style of tails-fits along panel lines
2 style of wheels
3 style of canopies
Bombs,rockets and drop tanks
flaps per the Hurricane
and a nicely detailed cockpit I was going to use some resin but the IP and seat were fine.

Sorry for the slightly off topic diversion but its a great kit.

Chris,

Don't give it a 2nd thought, your suggestion is just fine. The Airfix P-51D is on my build list, but I shamefully haven't bought one as yet. I do have their Spitfire Mkl in my rather small stash. But I do have the Accurate Miniature's P-51B calling my name.

Since retirement, I try to keep my stash under control as there really isn't much of a tomorrow, it's all current these days. So I build one, buy one kind of deal. Of course I have two spare Eduard F6F-3, & a -5, go figure. I owe myself a replacement for the F6F-3 but just haven't figured out what it will be as yet.

It's been more then two weeks since my last update, but the build has continued at my usual snail's pace. Finished up the re-puttying work, and primed with Mig Ammo black acrylic primer. Found more small issues, and reworked them. Then I re-primed, and everything looked ok, so I applied my Black Basing squigglies with Mig Ammo Gray primer.







Next work session I air brushed the bottom BS 210 Mig Ammo 243 Sky Type S from their Early RAF WWII set.

I didn't take any pictures during the individual painting steps, so these were shot after I completed the base color coats





Then I masked off the bottom for a hard demarcation line, and painted the top 1st with an overall coat of Mig Ammo BS 450 Medium Brown Dark Earth. I gave the paint a few days to dry, then came the long and laborious task of cutting the masks to make a hard line type B Camo pattern copying both the kit instructions and detail drawings I found online. I got close but it's not perfect by a long shot. Total time to complete the masking was 5 hours in one session.

After I cleaned my air brush I removed all the masking, and I was really quite pleased that I didn't have any issues with the hard line, and just two small spots on the bottom where the paint pulled off with the primer. I feathered it out with #8,000 & 12,000 Micro Mesh pads and re-painted. fortunately, it came out just fine.

For some reason when I edited the pictures the white balance seems off and the top side colors are a little to light and bright. Next photo session I'll go back to my old Auto WB settings and make the minor corrections in post rather then the pre-adjustments I made this time.









One issue is that the black basing really is almost completely hidden even though I thinned out the paint 2 parts paint to 4 parts Yellow Cap thinner. Just too many layers of paint. So I'll be doing post shading before decaling and weathering.

so far so good with the paint, but a long way to go. Getting it ready for the Mosquitocon is iffy at best, but for sure the Noreastcon. As it is I'm bringing the F6F-3 Hellcat and my 1/32 A4-E Scooter. Might just bring the Mosquito even though it has a lot if issues when you look up close and personal

Glad you think that the pre-shading looks about right. I did take another long look, and it does seem more modulated.

If I left it in my black basing scheme, it would make a perfect German Night fighter.

Okay, I use a different brand and I believe every brand has its own tone, but Dark Earth in my opinion should look reddish brown. At least that's how it looks on my Hurri Mk. I and Ventura Mk. II.

I'm still inclined to do a little post shading, but nearly as much as I originally thought necessary, as I'm now seeing more of the black basing effect come through as the colors cured as well as completely dried.

The other issue is that both top side colors just didn't photograph correctly as to what the actual Mig Ammo paints look like. I had a White Balance issue but corrected it in post, yet it still remained to some extent. Will be going back to my old 3 light setup with all 5500k bulbs and sticking with Auto White Balance, then correct as needed in post.

I'm cross posting this question as I just can't find a picture of the leading edge of the Hurricane Mk1 wing. The Airfix kit has the .303 MG barrels stopping halfway through the wing spar. There is no barrel that goes into the leading edge so you can actually see the front of the barrel. The leading edge does have deep recessed depressions for the barrels, but no barrels.

Were the gun openings taped, have a plug, or did they in fact remain open where you could see the front of the barrel?

Any and all info especially any pictures would be great appreciated.
