She's a beauty, Joel! Really turned out fine now. Well done! And I second Terri's words about the wire.

Joel,
It looks very good from here.
From what I read (and I mean read without too much depht) from your build thread, you were not very satisfied with the shades the paint gave (am I right?), but it sure looks spot on, especially the underside Sky.
But what catches my eyes are details, and your Hurricane has plenty of good details throughout. Good model as usual Joel

Cheers,
Pedro

Thanks so much for stopping by and liking the results.

I'm not that much of a stickler for dead on paint accuracy to even a FS595 chip, as the further back in time we go, the more aircraft paint tended to react to the external weather and atmospheric conditions. Hence, I do like to weather somewhat. The issue in this case was that the Mig Ammo Dark Brown and Dark Green colors from their Early RAF set are just to warm and light. Compared to many builds I've seen, it certainly does look that way. So I added a few dark filters to help tone down and darken up those colors. The Sky S does seem to be rather close.

I'm more then satisfied with the final results, and will do a little preventive paint adjustments when I build the Airfix Spitfire Mk1 later this year.

Hi Joel, a nice build.
I would have to agree the wires detract from the final build a bit. Probably thinner and tighter, and the wire parallel to the antenna should be closer to the base. I, after battling with fine fishing line which, after it's tightened, keeps exerting pressure on the connection points, have moved on to E Z line which I was able to source from wingnut wings. It works very well and remains taut without too much force at the ends.
The Airfix Hurricane is a very nice kit that I'd definitely do again at some point. Thanks for sharing.

regards.

Spud,
I'm really leaning towards just popping both off and going for a slightly smaller dia. stretched sprue. Which is why they're neither painted nor really tightened up. At times I've also run into the issue of the tightened up antenna line pulling a antenna out of whack. I keep on telling myself to get some E Z line since all 3 of my main online resources now carry it.

As for the windscreen mirror, I didn't bother adding one. All the restorations I've seen do indeed have that mirror, but the few pictures I have of an actual war time Hurricane doesn't seem have one.

Terri,
Thanks so much for checking out my Hurricane as it does mean quite a lot to me. I'm still leaning towards just popping off the antennas and going with a thinner stretch sprue one. I used plan old white glue, and didn't even paint it till I was sure.

Torsten,
Thanks so much my friend for those most kind words. If it wasn't for you, I'd have just left those colors as is, and never gave it another thought. But a few filters brought them somewhat into line. And the final results are just that much better.

Very nice work on the Hurricane Joel, it looks ready to defend the skies over SE England. I read your comments on photography with interest, lots of good information there! I use "Daylight" bulbs in my photo setup, and have found that takes care of almost all white balance issues. I have started to get serious with actual 1:1 macro shooting and I am finding out that DoF can be a challenge at times! Again, great work on your build as always my friend!

Ernest,
Thanks so much for stopping by and liking my efforts on the Hurricane. It's much appreciated.

As for photography, I actually found two of my old reflectors and bought to 5500k floods for them. I still went with a 3 bulb setup. Long exposures of 1/4 sec f25 @ ISO 200 worked just fine.
My main interests in photography are birds, florals, Macro/insects, and this year I'm branching out to some sports photography as well.

Christos,
Thank you for that most kind and generous words. While I've never considered myself anything more then a average builder, I do like to share my efforts through build blogs with fellow modelers. If one person learns something new, & or I learn something from them, then it's worth more then the time and effort.

Joel! A beautiful Hurricane and with less than two months from start to finish this has to qualify as a quick build, doesn't it?

I'm not as fond of the antenna as the rest of the gang here ( ), I would give it a thin wash of dark grey to tone it down a bit and give it more of a metallic look. Apart from that: a fine looking Hurricane that makes me feel the urge to take up my 144-scale ones!

Joel -

Have you tried fine nylon ( I think it's nylon- definitely synthetic) fly tying thread ?

I used it on the Hayabusa and now I won't use anything else . Diameter is just right,
Strong and easy to use . There must be a Fly Shop near you . You can glue it with white glue and tension it if necessary by lighting a PAPER match - BLOWING IT OUT- then pass it under the antenna .
If you want to try it and cannot find any I'll mail you a piece .

Magnus,
Thanks so much for stopping by, and appreciating my Hurricane build.

the antenna wires were never painted at the time I took the photos as I just wasn't comfortable with them. Honestly, even though many of the gang thought they were ok, I decided to go with a thinner dia stretched sprue, then painted with Tamiya gun metal which has that sheen to it.

Hard to believe, but this build is my record for sure. Of course being fully retired now, and being stuck inside from weekly snow storms afforded me daily long periods at the bench. But with the nicer weather finally making an appearance here, I'll be spending more time out doors and less at the bench, so I figure the old 3-3 1/2 month time frame will be more like it.

Richard,
Only tried cotton thread once and hated it. Still have to redue the antenna on my TBM-3 Avenger that was the test bed. While I've redone the Antenna with good old stretch sprue, I'll take a drive to Dicks and get some there. I'm assuming it's about .2mm in dia.

The Mosquitocon is getting real close, and I can't wait top finally meet you and Joe. My brother is working day and night on his 1/48 scale Tamiya F-14A as it' will be his only entrant. Why he doesn't want to bring his 1/32 scale Mossie is beyond me.

Fully retired AND snowstorms - that's dangerously close to cheating I would say !

A superb build Joel!

And in just 2 months! I can only dream of such short build times. Like Magnus said: Retirement and snow, seems like cheating

Thank you for sharing!

Will be looking forward to your next build!

Russell,

thanks so much for appreciating my build and your continued posting. It's what makes doing these blogs so rewarding and enjoyable.

I've waited more then 70 years for that scenario. All these years of worrying about snow or storms as I had to always be at work running a CVS drug store. Everyone else could call in, but not the managers. Gotta be there so the nut cases can buy beer and snacks (we don't sell tobacco products any longer).

Now with the nicer weather finally making it's way to LI, there's fishing, back to jogging, and I'm a nature photographer (my other life long hobby), so the build times will be back to closer to normal. And then there is the infamous "Honey to Do list" that can grow to a small booklet over night.
