I found three nicknames, presumably one is right.
The flying shoe
The flying clog
The flying sabot
Dave
Hi Dave,It's The Flying Clog.Named after the distinctive 'clog shaped' profile of it's main fuselage.
Well done,Your turn.

My aircraft knowledge is pretty lame, so this is probably really easy.
What is this, who used it, and how did they come to use it?

Hi Dave!
This is a He 112 with a rocket installed in the tail by Werner Von Braun. It was meant to demonstrate the safety of a rocket powered aircraft... Warsitz (the pilot who later flew the first jet in history, the He 178) crashed the plane on it's first (and last) test flight! More can be found
here for those who can read french! :-)

That's correct! I would read more, but my French is, well, shocking.
Your question!

Hi Dave!
You can use Bable Fish if you want to translate the page!
Here's one wich is a little more... subjective. But I'm sure you will find the answer in no time!
What WW2 plane seems to be the adulterine child of a Morane Saulnier MS 406 and a Hawker Hurricane?

The Finnish LaGG-Morane? We get gradually Finnish ourselves, as we have so many Finnish-related questions... ahh, I know now, Santa lives there... that must be the reason... :-)

Hi Gábor!
Sorry, it was not the plane I was thinking of!
The "Mörkö-Morane" you were refering to is the adulterine child of a MS 406 and a Klimov engine... not a Hurricane!
You don't have to go Finnish for this one, more into the east of Europe!

Sigh!
Let's have some easier questions for a while! (At least I think this will be easier).
We had a thread about Aces a while ago. My question is threefold: - Who has been the most successful fighter ace in the jet age? Which nationality? And how many kills?
Cheers!

Nigel,
I would say that Giora Epstein and Israel is correct. I've only seen 17 kills (
inter alia in Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces #59 - Israeli Mirage and Nesher Aces). All Egyptian. 12(!) during the Yom Kippur war.
Anyhows, the question is yours!

Hi Guys,
I can't find my Osprey Luftwaffe Jet aces book, but recall there was an ME-262 pilot who has credit for 22.
I've read that Epstein has mid-20s kills. Don't recall where.

Hi Nigel
That looks like a Fairey Spearfish. Now wouldn't that make an awesome 1/48 scale model!
All the best

Its been Heinz Bär with the 22 ME-262 kills, and Erich Rudorffer with 16 or 18, I am not sure.

Yes, but that was against prop aircraft!! Epstein fought against jets! (At least 16 of the downed aircraft were jets, mostly Mig-21 and Su-7).

Here is the list, All the craft shot down by Epstein were part of the Egyptian Air Force and consisted of:
9 Mig-21
1 Mig-17
4 Su-7
2 Su-20
1 Mi-8?
The last airplane Epstein shot down was on October 24, 1973, and he has held the modern-day world record ever since.

Hi there
I don't think this one's nearly as obscure as some of my "golden oldies", but you don't see it too often...
What's this aircraft?

Ahoy! So my question is (actually twin questions):
1. The first man to fly a looping (and the first to score a suicide air victory, so that he actually died)
2. The first man to fly a forward looping (and the only one to survive the Gee Bee Super Sportster)
They're not that difficult are they.

Then he is merely tied with USAF Korean ace Capt. Joseph McConnell, who killed all fighters operating in air-to-air--no attack types nor bombers.
That said, there are some latter-day adjustments to his score after consulting Soviet records, which puts Epstein back on top for jet VS jet top Honcho.
