To kick off the 4th(!) installment of our quiz, here's a cockpit photo - name the aircraft:

Hi Rowan!
Sorry I've been out of pocket, but work has interfered with more important things
I'm going to be venturesome and say "what is a Hawker Tempest ?" because of the lack of provisions for car doors like a Typhoon and becuse of the apparent fuel tank ahead of the cockpit.

Hi Mike
It's not a Tempest - but you're in the right era and nationality...

Thanks Rowan.
Okay, easy one.
Name me an originally designed multi-engine bomber that was converted into a fighter during WWII. Name any 4.
Edit: That should say at least 4! Sorry.

And there's also the YB-40, the Potez 63 fighter conversions, the Petlyakov Pe 8 nightfighter variant, and the Do 217 and DO 17 Kauz nightfighter conversions

All right guys, I'm going to dinner so anyone who's got a question on the tip of their tongue should go ahead and take the helm. Besides, it would take me a year and a half to come up with a question that would provoke thought from any of you. So long!!
What's that growling noise.

Okay, here goes . . . .
To the best of anyone's knowledge, the only WW II combat action between U.S. and enemy aviation units with both sides flying American-designed and built fighters took place during this operation.
And don't forget to phrase your answer in the form of a question :-) :-)

You got it, Jean Luc!
USN Wildcats got into a tussle with Vichy Hawk 75's, shooting down 15, I believe, for a loss of 7 F4F's. Not exactly a stellar performance for either side, or perhaps an indicator of how tough the opposition was on both sides?

Hi all!
As a Frenchmen I had to know the answer... or the question... anyway, here is one of my "Monster Planes":
Identify the four planes I used to make that "aircraft"... but be warned, Merlin usually finds the answer in a few minutes... so you have to be fast!

Do you have the same reference book as me? :-) I can't believe you find the answers so fast! One is still missing though...
