Wow. I'm surprised you got that one that fast. While I found is as the Yer-2, I think that Er-2 works as well. Over to you now for the next one Rowan.

According to Wikipedia:
The Yermolayev Yer-2 was a Soviet bomber aircraft of World War II which took part in some nocturnal attacks on Berlin. It originated as a derivative of the Stal-7 ("Steel-7") transport designed by Bartini.
The Yer-2 was a gull-winged aircraft, with the engines and landing gear nacelles fitted at the crank in the wing; it had twin tailfins. Around 320 were built.
I'm sorry, I was typing the answer, while the answer was being acknowledged.

Hi Matthew
It was purely by chance - I've been browsing Crowood Press's "Russian Piston Aero Engines" by Vladimir Kotelnikov and happened to notice the Er-2 (the book says "Er" - ahh the joys of translating from the Cyrillic alphabet...)
Anyway, here's the next one... what's this attractive flying-boat?:

Sorry about this Rowan, but it's the Briev Be-4(KOR-2). Good to see that we're staying with the Soviet theme here.

Hi Matthew
Woohoo! Far too easy - and no need to apologise! I've actually got a rather flaky internet connection, so I was just hoping beyond hope that someone would get this one quickly! ( and the pic's from the same book I mentioned above).
Back to you for the next one

Okay. For this next one I'm going to stick with this little mini-theme of Soviet planes (if that helps to narrow it down)...

Hi Nige
Not a Boeing, but you've got the nationality right.

Hi Fred
No, not Vought either.
1st clue: Despite its antiquated looks, this a/c entered USN service in late 1940.

Hi Jim
Actually, it's not an N3N, so this one's still up for grabs.

Hi Chuck
Well, I can guess at its purpose: to train US pilots switching over to nosewheel undercarriages. But, as to its absolute identity... I'd have to go hunting!

Nice guess Rowan, but sorry wrong. It was not used to train pilots converting to tricycle gear aircraft. BUT it is a U.S. aircraft.

I have to admit, I was quite surprised when I found this aircraft, and more surprised when Rowan didn't get it at first guess
HINT: The designation for this aircraft was reused by the manufacture 22 years later for a jet powered aircraft.
