Hi all
I thought I'd come back to find someone had nailed it!
I'll give you a clue: it shares a name with a University for the hard-of-hearing in Washington, D.C.
All the best

Ok folks first one of 2009.
What is this? and for a bonus what is its connection with ireland?
Should be fairly easy once you know the type.

Hi JP
Sorry - I missed your previous clue and thought we were still looking for a mystery de Havilland.
It's the Martinsyde Type A Mk II Seaplane - the first aircraft purchased by the Irish Air Corps.

spot on.
Martinsyde won at brooklands with motorbikes.
And the plane was bought so that Micheal Collins
could leg it back to ireland if the anglo irish treaty talks broke down.
As it happens the outcome of the treaty caused civil war in ireland and
collins was dead within a year of signing it.
Check it all out at wikipedia.com

And perhaps a port wing from a Hawker Sea Fury?
Posted: Monday, January 12, 2009 - 07:59 AM UTC
Hi again
Well done Matthew - it is indeed a K-44 tail. Tony - it's not a Sea Fury's wing, but you're correct in going for a carrier-based aircraft.
