I forgot how bad the AMT kit was, but I like a challange it will be fun making a purse out of the sows ear. What kit did you finally get for your P-40B/C?
BOB
I got the Revell/Monogram kit in 1/48. It was quite cheap at 16 Canadian Dollars. Although not a sows ear, it will require some effort be make a nice model out of it. Also the kit includes markings for a Pearl Harbour P-40 which is a great bonus.
Looking forward to get this campaign started

Jesper I remember buildiing 3 or 4 of those kits when they first came out (does that give away my age) they were good then and the Revell/Monogram still has the best/correct shape of all the kits out now.

Glad to hear it. That spells good for my Pearl Harbour entry. Do you remember anything about the decals? Did they settle well on the models etc.?

Jesper they were fine, just remember to use future before placing the decals and if needed set them with decal set. Others may have a different approach so which one works for you is great.

Well, I only have a few photos to go on from Pearl Harbour. So it is difficult to determine if it is an exact Pearl Harbour marking option. However, I believe it is, as it has the same national insignia, "US. Army" text on the underside and stencil number type on the tail. If the exact aircraft number fits I am not sure.
I can post pictures of the decals and the PH pictures I have in some days. But cannot right now as I am not on my own computer.

Jesper I no longer have the book that had some photos of aircraft at Pearl were either all olive drab or olive drab with large white numbers on the fuselage and white spinner and small band behind the spinner on the cowl.

jesper the numbers were inline for i believe the 44th pg, those were white. the other groups had a mix of black tail numbering with either the group, plane number, or both.
they varied........

Joe thanks for the profiles, that is the scheme that I will use for my P-36. What publication is this from, it looks very familiar?

Anyone know if any Grumman J2 Ducks were present at Pearl attack?

Hello Michael,
I started to answer your question and I got stopped when the kids woke up, came back to send you the answer and found you answered yourself.
The pictures I've seen look like they are overall grey with national insignia in four positions and black squadron codes. I do not know if they were any othetr variations but probably were. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Brian

Thanks for the reply, Brian.
I know most where at Ford Island and the Marines had a couple. I don't know anything of what color they might be other than figuring they most likely would be in the overall gray coloring you mentioned.

Michael,
Here is a photo of a J2F Duck at Ford Island NAS during the attack. Looking close the tail is a different color from the rest of the plane. Afterward I found this color plate reference for this Duck. Hope it helps.
Sincerely,
Brian

Thanks for the colour schemes, Joe. A great help to use the correct markings for my P-40. I think I will go with no. 4 from the top.
Sounds interesting with the duck, Michael. What kit will you be building?

Sorry for the long delay in the reply, Jesper.
My main model will be the Revell 1/72 Gato converted to be the USS Tautog.
I was thinking if I could not get all the references I needed then I'd do a Duck. The kit I have is the Glencoe Models 1/48 version.

I opened up a big box from great models webstore on Friday. It contained some
models that are now headed to the Bagdad Model Club, and a very nice Hasegawa Nakajima B5N2 Type 97 (Kate). Looks like a nice kit, which I will build straight OOB. This will be the first Japanese kit I have ever built. I guess I am going to need some paint.

I will start warming up my engine on my P-40.
Last week I just received
THIS BOOK from Kagero. Excellent reference and it has masking tape included for a number of cool P-40 variants among those a Pearl Harbour P-40. Actually there is masking included for two versions each of the aircraft in each of the major scales. Highly recommended.
Looking forward to get started

I checked the instructions for my Nakijima B5N2 (Kate). In the painting profiles, it gives options for two aircraft, at Pearl Harbor, on December 8, 1941.
December 8, 1941
Is this a typo or an international date line thing?
Any way, I to will be warming up the engine sometime soon.

Hopefully a typo - or really really bad research
