Hi Warren

Well it was easy at first glance... but that's as far as it went! It's a mock-up (I can tell that much) and it's an American propeller (I think) and side-by-side seating as a trainer? (again, I think! It's looks like a Proctor "canopy" LOL!). Hmmmm...

All the best

Heres what may or may not be an odd question...is it anything to do with India?

Hi Warren

Interesting - I looked at India and all the Commonwealth countries (and everywhere else I could think of! ) early on in my hunt, and didn't find a lead. Back to work...

All the best

HAL made Prentices under license. Is this a HAL prototype using bits and pieces they had available? Or are you amazing at photoshop? Or am I just barking up the wrong tree?

Hi Warren

A prototype? Looking at the starboard "wing" and the "canopy", and the way the propeller is supported by what appears to be a stout piece of timber, surely it's a mock-up?!

I Googled "photo via B Harry" and all the results showed photos of Indian Air Force planes, hence the question about Indian origin.
That, apart from spotting the Hamilton prop is all I can come up with

It doesn't, you know. A mock-up is a full-scale model of the real thing, generally made of cheap materials, that shows all the structural detail, engines, wiring positions etc, but only as representative shapes to demonstrate layout. It's never airworthy. A prototype is the first example of the real real thing, constructed out of the correct materials and fitted with actual engines, armament etc. It may not be perfected but it is at least airworthy.

If the mystery aircraft is Indian, it must be a proposal for a trainer that didn't enter service, and I don't think it can be Prentice-derived. Any more clues?

Well, either I stumped you all or you got sick of looking.. The Mystery plane was the mock-up/prototype for the HAL HL-1... which never went into production...

Anyway, how about this one..

I even left the rego on the plane for you..

Hi Warren

Even knowing its identity, the HL-1 still doesn't turn up in any of my web-searches! It was a great find on your part.

All the best

Even I can get a sitter like that ...

Right, then, with apologies for the delay, another of pigsty's awkward little questions. Which aircraft could be both a biplane and a monoplane?

I think there was also a Russian prototype that had a wing that folded back into the body, but I can't recall the name of it.

Burn it?

Warren is close - although, rather than folding back, the lower wing folded so that the inner section stood up against the side of the fuselage and the outer section hugged the underside of the upper wing. But Michal has identified it so it's over to him!

Potty idea, no?

What's this?
