I agree with Bruce, we should agree "Tiffies", because they were used more as CAS than fighter by the end of the war.

yes ...they were a big heavy aircraft ..but very very powerful..
Not so good in a dogfight (especially since early aircraft had a distressing habit of shearing off their tail during manouvers)
They were highly effective as ground attack platforms ...they virtually stopped the Germans rail transport system et al..

First enlisted, front and centre. Looking forward to this one. I think one of the first kits I ever made was a 1/72 Typhoon, I haven't made one since but I love the aircraft so I think I'll travel down memory lane and find a 1/48 or 1/32 kit for this build. Any advice on good vs bad kits gratefully accepted.

Cheers all, D

Hi all

Photobucket

Does the Roden 1/48 Grumman OV-1A/JOV-1A Mohawk count as a CAS. If so this will be my project.
Great campaign by the way.

Hey Jim,
I like the idea of ground attack aircraft, signed up for this campaign. I just recently completed this one... The Roden 1:48 RAF BE2c, originally designed as an artillery observation aircraft, but soon became obsolete, and modified for a CAS role, which was an extremely dangerous role due to ground fire.

DSC_0007" BORDER="0">

This brings me to a question on rules eligibility, most aircraft from the Great War were designed primarily as fighters or scouts, considering the fact that ground support was a newly devised tactic. Many aircraft were forced into ground support roles as technology outdated thier initial design, like the BE2c, or as the tide of war changed, namely the Sopwith Camel and the Fokker DVII. Great Britain organized specific units tasked with the role of ground support, but were equipped with fighters. Basically Camels with Bombs. Would an entry from No.70 Sqn. flying Camels, attached to a tank corps in a CAS role, qualify for this campaign? I do have several options on eligibility, namely an FW190 F8, but would aircraft such as the Me110 or the Mosquito also qualify for this campain?
Thanks for your time.
Mo

I love your BE2!..the wrap around paint on your wings is VERY well done..I have a special spot in my heart for biplanes..but we agreed that the aircraft should be purpose-built, or purpose-modified in the factory..
I understand that the ground support role was not really developed until after WW1, however...... I could be wrong, but I seem to remember the Sopwith Salamander as being purpose built for attacking trenches? Id like to see some WW1 aircraft included in the campaign..

Even in my stash there is plenty to choose from if but I think I'll stick with the il-2
Had a few thoughts of ribbons. The AFCAM USAF ribbon is quite nice . Scarlet with gold diagonal stripes.
But what about something a little more distinctive.

Nothing says Close Support quite like an A10

I got mock-strafed by a pair of A-10s whilst driving thru western Nevada back in 2002. It was REALLY intimidating!

I havent been in the US much, but I drove to Myrtle Beach once ...the A-10s were flying all over the place...they were straight line flying and I found THAT intimidating.....There arent any military bases around here at all...heck the only air traffic we get really is floatplanes and other private planes..sometimes a police helicopter looking for gro-ops..

Hello Todd,
I think that the AH-64 class was primarily used as a Tank killer. Was the D model redesigned as a CAS only Helio? I know that in the First Gulf War and the later Gulf Wars, they were used as both AT and CAS.

It is up to our Great and Noble Leader to decide if they are OK.

I am also going to do an A-10 only in 1/48 scale. I have to find all of the Resin AM Parts and other Decals to go with it.
Cheers,
Bruce

I know in the recent conflicts all they do is CAS work ... no tanks to kill ... ck youtube and you'll see what I mean ... I know the Brits' apache was primarily CAS ...I read the book titled Apache by Ed Macy ... EXCELLENT read ... I will let Jim make the call on the Apache though ... its his show after all.

Just want to throw this into the mix; how about a F-15E Strike Eagle; part of their primary role is CAS. Would that be allowed or can I get stuck into it now?!!

Dang it guys,I see both sides on this one really...
My main mandate is for people to have fun and build kits..but...I think Im gonna say a "nay " to both the apache and the f-15.....
Its a bit of a sticky wicket call, as the F-15 as far as I know was designed as a interceptor/dogfighter...and as Bruce says, the Apache was designed as a Tank killer..
I think the Apache COULD be KINDA considered ground support in an arguement, as the Typhoon busted up a hellofa lotta armour ....and trains....and buildings ....and other stuff..
Does anyone have a rebuttal? This here is a democratic dictatorship...lol
