The kit is not so good and I would not recomend it to anyone except a hardcore fan of this plane. The overall fit is poor and the wheelbays are hard to put together. The cockpit is difficult to paint and weather due to its construction as a one piece resin part. The wings dont have the correct dihedral and small parts which are moulded in plastic are not very good. Resin part on the other hand are realy nice as are the PEs.
In other words it's a typical Special Hobby kit which requires some modelling skills to complete. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished

Hi All
Here is my #2 entry into the campaign.
This is a CMR resin 1;72 scale Hughes 1B both versions are included in this boxing,i will build kit number two later.
First flown in August 1935 with a short low aspect ratio wing, the following September it set a world speed record of 352.388 MPH,
At the end of the flight Hughes landed gear up in a sugar beet field.
After having set the record Hughes and his team decided to modify the 1B for a speed record cross-country.
This is the version that I have built.
Modifications included landing gear and a wing with 32 Ft span and slightly larger tail surface.
January 1937 Hughes flew from Burbank Ca to Newark Nj in 7 hours,28 mins,25 secs.
Average speed for 2,490 miles was 332 mph.

That's one nice build, Richard. Was this the plane everyone thought Hughes had sold to the Japanese who then made the Zero out of it? I remember reading something like that- the reasoning being no one thought the Japanses had the tech to build such an aircraft. Once again, nice build.

According to Wikipedia, it was Hughes's view that the Zero was derived from the design of the H1, which was denied strongly by the designers of the Zero. If I were designing an agile fighter, I am not sure I would copy a dedicated high-speed aircraft.
The CMR kit looks quite nice, and it is great that you get two complete planes, rather than a choice of one or the other.

@ usethermite: Thanks for the supportive words, I hope I can finish at least this campaign on time.
@ Van : Congratulations on the "Spirit". Nice and clean built.
@ Jessica : Ive done a few short runs in the past but I have the feeling this one is realy somewhat flawed. I also built the Polikarpov R-Z from Special Hobby two years ago and it was less work even thou it was a biplane with skis and acetate canopy.

Richard, beautiful build of a great machine! It would be nice if they came out with an injection molded model of this aircraft wouldn't it? Russell

Hi Russell
I really like the lines of this aircraft and I would like to see it in 1:48 injection molding one day.
Thank you all for your comments!

Well, Richard, as a 72 scale modeler primarily I would like to see an injection molded in that scale too! LOL 1/32 scale would be a pretty awesome sight too. Russell

You must recall that Hughes had the world's largest ego, and at that time was just beginning to lose touch with reality.

I tend to agree with Jessica, I don't think the Zero, in all my readings, can be readily traced back to a copy of anything. I have always felt it was simply an original design of Mitsubishi. Russell

Im afraid, I wont make it in time again. I had a lot of troubles with the canopy, where the fitt is horrible and also with paint. I strated with X-2 gloss which was not the right step and then I hastily tried to correct the finish with gloss clear which looked even more horrible. I switched to Gunze to save the kit from ending up in a trash can, but all this took a few days so now I barely have the basic paint done. Since Im working late hours tomorrow and on Tuesday I probably wont make it.

Still working on the small B2. I had to redo the canopy, gaps and filler plus sanding. I plan on repainting today. Decals tomorrow.

Keep going!
I will award ribbons on the 1st May and give the late finishers until May 6th to complete the campaign.

Well, here is the B2 in all it's gunship gray glory with filled and sanded canopy / fuselage gaps. Underside needs touch up and all the little bits wheels and missiles added. Decals next followed by dull coat. This is 1/200 scale.

Nice progress guys, but time and motivation has run out for me. I suppose mine will end up in the Hangar Queen campaign at some point.

Super nice, Rob! You just gotta love the X-15 when it's all decked-out like that. Great build!
