Richard, with that bright orange, it's nearly impossible to miss. I guess with the campaign ending, hardly anyone is following the last few builds.

That's a pity, because the orange is quite spectacular. I just wish I had got mine to look so good.
Meanwhile, back at the workbench, the DC-3 and 4 have their full primer coats on now, and the areas needing more attention are readily evident

Thank you Jessica
I used the Vintage Flyer decals you suggested and cut down the cockpit glaze.
The decals were well worth buying and I will use them again.

Richard, Everybody,
Some amazing work from some tough kits going on. That said,
I am in with the AM Dauntless also. I picked up this kit on clearance at a craft store years ago for $4. Couldn't pass on that and here I am finally building it (or attempting to).
This was my first "Plane Kit" bought since I was a kid. The last? A Monogram SBD. Loved that kit and the lines of the plane. It actually looked good as it was the first time I used an Airbrush. Managed to stay on the shelf for about a year until it participated in the "Dirty Creek Convoy Battle" in the Summer of '77. Covering itself in glory, it used an experimental 2 part weapon of Brake fluid and pool chlorine to take out the USS Wasp, SS Capistrano, and severely damage the DKM Prince Eugen amidst a barrage of BB gun and Roman Candle fire. Sniff, sniff. But I digress (as usual). I base- coated it Sunday so we'll see how far she gets.

Charlie, I have several of the old AM kits, and most were cutting edge for their time. You should enjoy the build. The only issue might be the age of the decals.

Hey Joel, Considering the age, you may be right. Thankfully, much to the chagrin of my wife, my inventory stays in a spare bedroom so it's been climate-controlled all its life and they look great. We'll see though. Thanks for the heads up,
Charlie

Charlie, Sure hope they're still OK.
I've converted one of the spare bedrooms into my computer/model/photography room. Stash (hopefully will stay under 12 kits), is in the closet. More then 25 years ago we decided that central air was the way we wanted to go, so that we could be comfortable all year. Modeling 12 months out of the year in a climate controlled environment, is a dream come true.

Hi there,
a little progress on my SPAD. Cockpit is ready, General Ky is waiting to get properly dressed in his black flying suit. The pink scarf will be added last
No problems yet with the kit.

I overcame a huge psychological hurdle to get the wing to fuselage joint faired. One of the challenges of vacufrom kits.
almost ready for paint.

in primer. looks ok.
need to make some oil coolers, there is just a lump on the bottom of the engine, which is caved in, the plastic is very thin there.
and cut out wheel wells. maybe.

Just amazed how your workbench looks everytime you update on a project. Probably I'm not the only one. Like that.

Jessica, looking forward to seeing both the -3 & -4 with a base coat. As far as workbenches go, I do have to admit that mine is rather neat and organized. Unfortunately, that doesn't prevent the carpet monster from doing his thing every chance he gets.

since my metal props have been back ordered for N months and don't pretend to be shipping in the next week, I guess Ill go for the full vacuform experience and rub out the kit ones
...
well that went fairly well.
some gentle working with jewelers files and some black paint, call it good.

The Laws of Modelling say that just as soon as you've finished gluing these in place your metal props will arrive.

Good luck with the props. Are you going to have to 'fill' the back to keep an airfoil shape?
Ah, Jess, my display area is overwhelmed with ~ 10 single engine fighters. Where do you put all those airliners?????

I used to have a set of Ikea shelves they all sat on. Since we moved that hasn't been set up, so now they sit on top of our bookcases, and sometimes on top of the books.

Jonathan, nice work so far on those props. Vac-u-forms have always been one area of modeling I've shied away from since my one effort back in the 70's which was a complete disaster.

I learned everything I know about building vacuform kits from the masters right here, in the Vac Attack campaign thread.
Once you know the magic trick of cutting out and rubbing down, its actually quite satisfying.
Welsh Models makes quite a few airplane models that are not available in any other medium, (as well as DC-3, DC-4 etc. )
such as the HS-748
I think tho in future, where there is an acceptable injection molded kit, like the Minicraft DC3 and DC4, I would choose that over the vacuform.
Im going to paint the C-47 tonight, and I have made up the decals
and my ref photo

That's going to look really good
My DC-4 isn't doing so well. The airbrush decided to splatter just as I was finishing off the fuselage crown
I tried buffing in some SNJ powder, but that just made it look worse. I'll leave it to dry and try some gentle sanding. Meanwhile, we learn why CP Air's marketing slogan was "Orange is Beautiful"
