Well Looks like I will head out to the Luftwaffe Forum tonight and post the same question there.

I am hoping to start on my Build this weekend.
First thing will probably be to scratch some type of real interior. I do have some PE German bomber seats and Belts so that should help.

Jeff! Sorry, can't help you! I've never been much of a bomber guy even if I have gotten myself an Airfix Dornier lately!

That is all for now.

No problem Magnus,

It looks like the Guys over at Luftwaffe and Allied Air Forces Discussion Forum and LEMB are helping me out.

It is amazing how much research these guys on these forums do.

And as usual it is never as simple as you think. The one I wanted to do was actually only used in France Campaign.

And as far as 9/KG76 there are many discrepancies with markings and actually AC.

I always like to make sure even if the model itself in detail isn't 100% accurate that at least the markings are Historically Accurate for what I am trying to portray.

Yeah I know a bit anal.........

Peter, I love that 109 cockpit! The weathering is very realistic.

I've started doing some work on my Airfix Dornier. Just cleaning up cockpit parts at the minute before I start putting it all together and painting. I'm surprised that some parts do have a fair amount of flash. I'm starting to wonder if we're already getting wear and tear on the molds for this kit.
One thing I am disappointed by are the MG15's. They are pretty bland, featureless and are reminiscent of the guns in more ancient Airfix offerings. I am thinking of replacing them with these from Quickboost, intended for the Hasegawa He-111: http://www.quickboost.net/Obrazky/72027.jpg

They have the added advantage that I can attach them later, but would the Dorniers guns have had the same ball mounting at the base of these barrels?

Any advice is appreciated.

Stephen.

Stephen,

While I'm very much enjoying the new Airfix Typhoons (1/24 and 1/72,) I have to agree with you about the flash. There isn't enough of it to put me off the kit, but more than I would have expected in a brand new mold. Iffy quality control, I think.

I joined this campaign but I won't be able to build anything for it as the rules state that it can't be more than 33% started, but I do have this on the go:

With your permission I will post some progress here? I think that I already have a thread started elsewhere. I am building this as a Mk I of 92 Sqn, QJ-K K9998 flown by Geoffrey Wellum who was the youngest pilot to fly Spitfires during the battle of Britain. This was the first Spitfire that he flew. I am actually building it for the Mullion Heritage centre where I live as Mr Wellum lives 2 minutes from me

Hi Michael/Stephen

I hope you don't mind me butting in here, I normally quietly sit and watch these campaigns from the side lines. However, I may be able to shed some light on why molds flash, even when new.

I can tell you, this isn't wear and tear on these molds.

99% of the time, what causes a mold to flash in this way, is putting the tool into a molding machine that is too small for the pressure exerted whilst injecting the plastic into it.

This is often done by molding companies in order to cut costs as smaller machines are cheaper to run than larger machines.

The result is that as the molten plastic is forced into the mold, the pressure exerted by the plastic flowing through the tool forces the two halves of the tool apart as the machine is too weak to keep it closed properly, resulting in flash.

The simple fix-put the tool in a machine adequate to the task of keeping the tool closed during molding.

Unfortunately, cost is often the overriding factor.

Russell,

Interesting information, thanks! You'd think a company the size of Airfix/Hornby would be able to get the right machines, but who knows. It's also interesting that the problem is occurring on large (1/24) and small (1/72) kits.

Stephen I am sorry my friend I can't help with the MG question, I have very little knowledge of WW2 Luftwaffe armament. Look forward to seeing your Dornier take shape.

Hi Michael
Often what happens in the plastics industry is that although Airfix own the mould, they will more than likely contract the work of moulding out to a 3rd party, that just does moulding.
In order to make a few extra cents profit on each part that the company moulds, they will move the moulds to machines smaller than they were designed for.
Therefore what needs to happen (and often does in the Automotive industry in which I work) is for Airfix to reject the shipment of kits, fine the moulder for interrupting supply by not meeting quality standards and then ask them to re-supply the parts without the flash.
Failing that, the customer (Airfix) can (because they own the moulds) take them to another moulding company who will meet quality standards required.
Hope this gives a little insight into what goes on behind the scenes of the plastics industry

BTW, great builds going on here, very enjoyable to watch!

Sorry Pete, I just realised that all of my last post seems addressed to you rather than my compliment on your build. Thanks for the input anyway.

Russel, thanks for clear up on that little problem we are having in regards to the flash. It's something I hope they take not of and aim to improve. Hornby have shifted all production of Airfix kits to India rather than in the UK (despite having a factory already able to do the job at home), so that could be the reason. Hornby have done that to pretty much everyone they've acquired over the years.

Hi Stephen

unfortunately going offshore is simply a matter of economics for most companies in order to survive. Without a drawn out explanation of world economics, what needs to happen is for Airfix to tighten the screws on their suppliers, or go elsewhere.

They've got great product now, (I've a cupboard full of their new tooled kits and am a huge fan) and just need to keep a lid on the quality.

Yeah... I don't think I can stretch the rules quite that far. Nice work though!

Ok fellow BoBers, I have a conundrum and could use some input. I cannot decide which Hurricane to build for this campaign. The choices are:

A. 1/24 Airfix kit (to go with the 1/24 Tiffie I've almost gotten to painting stage).

B. 1/32 Pacific Coast Models metal wing kit (to go with several other 1/32 BoB kits in the stash).

What do you all think? They both look like fine builds, just gotta decide which! (Now watch the new Airfix 1/48 kit land on my doorstep and screw it all up.)

Can't tell that I've got a bit of a thing for the Hurri, can you?

Some progress on the Messerschmitt

Thats all for now. The panels at the front are a bit of a nightmare fit, raised in one area and too low in another. Loads of sanding and filling.

Well, as I feared above, look what arrived today:

 photo 2015-05-02_16-46-55_381_zpsfrmqbcnl.jpg

Dang it!

I gotta tell ya, not too long ago I was ready to say I could happily live the rest of my modelling life building just Wingnut and Tamiya 1/32 kits, but these new Airfix releases have made me a believer. Have a look at this one:

 photo 2015-05-02_16-47-38_938_zpsjb7s2toh.jpg

 photo 2015-05-02_16-50-36_490_zpsgwmgfpdv.jpg

 photo 2015-05-02_16-50-48_654_zpsotoemd51.jpg

 photo 2015-05-02_16-50-59_39_zpsg088rsuu.jpg

And all this for about $21! Thank you Mr. Hornby for rescuing this classic brand!

So, guess what I'm saying it, I think I'm doing this one for the campaign.

Michael
