Eirik , Russ , Hubert et all - Thanks for the input .I have just begun to repair my Hayabusa blog vandalized by PB by starting to replace some images on page 8 .
I signed up with ImageShack u.s. - approximately $ 20. Per year - let's hope they don't pull the same b.s. as PB. I will wait a bit to see if they are o.k with this before repairing the rest.
If you checked the box at the beginning stating this will be a build log then you can edit your own entries at any time but not the responses of others . I have also discovered that in my case the edit option is only available on the device that I created the blog on - in other words I posted the pics and text on my desktop and so that is where the edit icon appears- it doesn't appear on my iPad.
Those that may be more computer knowledgeable then I ( and that would be most people! ) may know the how's and why's of this.
At any rate, Image shack could not be any easier to use - fingers crossed here !

Hi to all who may be following this - still alive here and thanks to everyone for their interest. I have an Image shack account now - infinitely better than PhotoF-ckit.
I am extremely busy with real life stuff at the moment. Diorama progress is on hold till first week in August. My brother in law Jim will be coming to visit for a bit and together we will be exploring scene composition , base size / shape etc. Jim is an internationally recognized armor / diorama guy with many National IPMS awards to his credit as well as AMPS . Full time professional Architectural model maker as well so I am fortunate to have him in my camp. I hope to be able to undo PB's vandalism of my blogs here on Aeroscale at some point but it is not in the cards at the moment. Updates will be posted with photos as I progress and as time permits I hope to replace missing images . Many of us are in the same situation- don't give up and thanks to all for their continuing interest. Richard

Hi to all - It's time to get this rolling again - Rowan is building something again and Joel has made his welcome return so I better get my butt in gear.
Here is the base of bamboo -
And the Oscar on the base - colored paper approximating the grassy area.
I plan on using static grass for the first time.
and another shot of the same . I have reshot the various panels on the upper fuselage in an effort to regain some of the color modulation that I lost during the decal gloss/ flat coats. Don't know how well it shows in the pics.

Just caught up with your build. The Ki-43 looks great. It's hard for me to see that color modulation, but I hope to see it in person for this up coming Mosquitocon, and Noreastcon. I made it though all those eye injections and one more round of laser surgeries. So there isn't anything else they can do at this point.
The diorama concept really looks good, and your starter truck is modeling at it's finest. Never heard of anyone using Bamboo for a base, so it's another 1st for me.

Thanks again for those more then kind words. And yes, I'm holding my own with the vision in my right eye, but the left eye is classed as legally blind now. this does create some really interesting issues with DOF working up close, as I really have none. God only knows where the brush tip will actually touch, cause I sure don't.
I'm really looking forward to finally meeting you and Brian this coming year. The Noreastcon will be practically in my backyard.I have no doubts that your Ki-43 will walk away with trophy for sure, it's that good. Now get back to work, and get that beautiful base done. BTW, where does one find Bamboo bases?

Joel- the material for the base came from Rockler Hardware/woodworking.- it is essentially a length of 1 x 8

Thanks Terri - Nice to here from you - I plan on leaving the Bamboo natural as I did a hand scraped finish on it and it has a very warm glow - it is very dense and likely would not take stain very well unless the surface was scuffed up with sandpaper.

I've begun to accent panel lines with pin washes -
highly thinned oils - Payne's gray on lower surfaces , burnt umber on uppers.

Your panel line accent pin washes really came out perfect. Can't see a single miss or error anyway. In the close up I can also see some color modulation. I know that it's hard to photograph it, as I'm having the same issue with my Hellcat trying to take pictures to capture it.

The purpose-made building jig you're using looks very useful. It reminds me that I did buy an adjustable one a while ago, but I've never used it!
I guess old (bad) habits die hard - but I really should dig it out and try it...

Rowan - just a simple fixture made from foam core illustration board and hot glue joints - only takes minuits to knock together and one piece will yield several of these . Richard

Rowan,
I'm assuming you're referring to the JH model stand. I also use one. Works great but I don't much care for the V groves that the fuselage seats in once I've started the painting process as the dirty rubber band lining does leave marks. I use rigid pipe insulation over those fuselage V holders to prevent the marking.

Yep - that's the one. The added foam pads look a neat idea, but I must admit I just haven't even used the jig in its standard form yet. I noticed it the other day poking out from under a pile of stuff and made a mental note that I really should try it.

Hi Terri - Thanks for the kind words . I may do some streaking / dot filter work on the bottom as I think it looks a bit stark. I will also do some dust around gear legs / tires/ tail wheel but not till the end .

I've been still playing around with the composition - not entirely thrilled yet but getting there. Meanwhile I am practicing the static grass thing - the applicator is the economy model from Micro Mark. Be aware that the instructions on the package call for two D cell batteries ( not included of course ) - only after purchasing said D cells did I actually open the device up to find that the correct
batteries were AA.
Here is the first test attempt-
The oil drums were shot with Vallejo IJA khaki brown then hit here and there with dessert sand. Thought they needed something more before weathering so a trip to google translator yielded this -
a trip to the library and 50 cents later got the Kanji writing reduced by 45% so it looked right on the drums and a piece of acetate overlaid to cut for a stencil -
Stencil applied and shot with Vallejo white -
I don't know how accurate this may be but I assume the fuel drums must have been labeled in some fashion . I think it adds to the feel of the scene so I'm going to play the artistic license card.

Did my best to find any stencilling on the Japanese fuel drums, but unfortunately - no positive result.
I assume that actually there have been some stencils extruded (like in case of the German ones) or written freehand on the barrel's age (as it can be barely seen in the photo).
Anyway, a good idea and indeed adds something to the scene.
