With the holidays here, I have managed to get some nice blocks of time at my model bench. Like most aircraft, I am starting at the cockpit/interior for my Cessna 172 build. While that is being worked on, I did some research and found that the Ethiopian 172s did not have the roof windows as molded in the kit.

I filled the widows in with the kit glass then puttied them over to get a smooth finish.

While I was at it, I also filled in the large ejector pin divots in the interior of the fuselage. I don't know if these could be seen after the fuselage is glued together but decided to not take the chance.

Have fun modeling!
Mike

Getting ready for primer. A couple of fit issues, but nothing major.

Great choice! You are much farther along with your Cessna 172 than I am so I'll be following your build with interest! It looks like you have a nice start on the 172. What scheme are you planning to put on the 172? As soon as I get some more done on the interior of my 172, I'll start to post updates.
Have fun modeling!
Mike

Mike, I'll most likely do a custom paint job. I also filled in the top wing windows. I've also added weights in the only place that can hide them, under the cowling. I cutoff the back two cylinders and flattened some weights. Need to keep the front two cylinders since they can been seen from the front.

And over the Christmas break, I have been able to apply paint. The Invasion Stripes are painted then masked.

Now a clear coat, then decals.

Alan, that is a great approach to solving the balance problem with this kit. I was thinking along a similar line by deleting the engine halves entirely and setting a weight on the engine frame. I am planning on taking care of the see through problem in front by scratchbuilding some PE inserts to replicate the cooling radiators that one typically sees through these holes.

I like your idea of a custom paint job, cool!

I am absolutely thrilled to see not one but two Cessna 172s being built in a Aeroscale campaign. its is like pulling teeth getting folks here to build no-combat aircraft, never mind civil craft!

Some great efforts underway already. Kevin's C47 looks superb and it will be fun following the Cessnas.
Well here's the start to my contribution to the no-combat aircraft campaign
A couple of firsts, a transport plane and a 1/144 scale kit. I like a challenge but it will need some guidance along the way.

A Handley Page Hastings C3. The Royal New Zealand Air Force had a fleet of four in the 1950s and 60s.

As befits its scale, there isn't too much parts wise. I have cleaned up the pour stubs and the gaps between wing and body don't seem too bad. The rear fuselage section is marginally wider than the front so will lose some detail smoothing that out, not that there is much.

There are also four metal props, three wheels, two wheel bay doors and two metal wheel struts.

the first tricky piece is the cockpit windows. They are detailed as deep indentations. I have some thoughts but any clever ideas to deal with these and have a better representation of the glass?

cheers

Yeah Bob, Progress!

My paint space has been rebuilt, with heat and power! Hopefully I can get the interior of the Clipper painted and start assembly today.

Hi Michael. I wish he had not recessed the windows, it does make it more difficult, because of course one way or another they have to be filled in to a flush surface. That is how all his vacuforms were made up, and so I guess he carried on that style with the new mold.
The general practice in 1/144 is black decal windows, which is just as well, the scale does not allow anything to be seen inside a glazed cockpit.
I guess you can either fill the recesses with fine putty and file them perfectly flat, apply the decal, and then after all the finishing is done touch up the windows with gloss sealer, or, perhaps, I haven tried this, apply the decals to the bottoms of the recesses, and then fill with tiny drops of clear, self leveling casting resin. this would have to be done one window at a time, carefully propping the model so that each window is horizontal. youd have to adjust the fixture about eight different times. I dont know how long that stuff takes to set up, so the process could take days...

This is my best effort at glazing a fully detailed and painted 1/144 scale cockpit, built for a campaign a few years ago. A Welsh vacuform kit, I knifed the (recessed) cockpit windows out of it and filled the holes with Testors Windowmaker.

Complete waste of time, jet black inside even under direct sunlight.
the cabin windows I printed on decal film, I chose a dark blue-green colour, I think black would have been better.

Thanks Jonathan. I will try and fill the holes for a start and see where we go from there.

Here's an update on my Ethiopian Cessna 172. I have been working on the cockpit and have that completed. It was a challenge trying to figure out the proper colors but there was enough hints in the photos I found to work out the probable color scheme. The red seats do have a dark wash to give them some texture but this looks washed out (pun intended!) in the photos.

And stumbling right out of the starting gate, Airfix 1/144 Boeing 314 Clipper.

Plastic looks good, need to get it washed and paint the interior gray and I'll be on my way...

Progress!!!! OK, not much but, I got a protected, heated spot to actually spray paint. Tried to primer the inside of the Clipper but the rattle can was effectively dry. Pulled out a ancient bottle of Floquil Marine primer, got it mixed back up, poured it straight into the airbrush and it worked! Sprayed just fine, no splattering, no clogging just plain old paint!

Also got the windows and the windscreen dipped in Future, so I'm pretty much ready to start assembling.

I have Hawk's 1/245 USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) dirigible kit that I've been stalled on for a few years now and I'm looking for a good excuse to finish it up. My original plan was to make a massive dio (the kit itself is over 3 feet long) of 8/25/1927, when the weather didn't cooperate with the moored airship and lifted its tail to a near-vertical position. I'm now thinking that I just want to build this kit for normal display, and then work on a smaller scale balsa or foam scratch-build for the dio...the engineering required to stand this massive and heavy plastic kit upright may be more than my mathematically-challenged mind can handle.

The kit is started, but only the gondola is in progress. Per the campaign's rules, ZR-3 was designed by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin to be a civilian passenger airship, as the Treaty of Versailles prohibited construction of weaponized airships. The US Navy saw ZR-3 mostly as an experimental platform, including the use of trapeze biplane fighters (perhaps this falls under the "military rapid deployment" category?), though it ultimately was most useful as a training ship, mail carrier, and propaganda tool similar to today's Blue Angels.

So what do you all say? Permission to join the campaign?

The two Minicraft Electras in grey primer, complete except for props and U/C -

time to start designing decals/masking plans to make this ( times two, N5511 also flew in this scheme) -

yes, I lost a nose wheel. maybe it will turn up before it gets vacuumed up -
