Hey guys,

I know this might sound redundant, but can I enlist with a desert 109 F I will start building in the next couple of days? It’s a 1:48 from Eduard

Sounds good to me Pedro!

Michael

Thanks Michael, I’m in !

Hi, guys!

UPDATE
I started detailing the cockpit. One of the very few add-ons planed for this kit was scratch-building the seat harnesses. I used for this scope textured masking tape painted with acrylics:

I also brush-painted some interior details; once the acrylics will dry, I will apply an oil wash:

I'm working right now on finishing the instrument panel and soon enough the interior will be ready for buttoning up

Cheers!

Hi, guys!

UPDATE

I finished detailing the interior and applied a light oil wash (sorry for the quality of the first picture - it's a bit out of focus):

Instrument panel complete, waiting to be installed:

Cheers!

Chaz see you over Malta! I will be flying my Picchiatello. It won't be friendly - you have been warned!

UPDATE
The propeller airbrushed with Vallejo Air RLM70 Schwarzgrun as per instructions. Unfortunately, there are no decals for the propeller.

Meanwhile I have buttoned up the fuselage (no pictures) and, waiting for the glue to set, I fiddled with the "peripherals":

I added breather tubes to the fuel tanks from stretched plastic tube:

The same went for the machine-gun barrels:

The ordinance (SC 250 or 500?) was primed with Rust-oleum aluminum, then parsimoniously sprayed with Vallejo Air RLM70, letting some "metal" shine thru:

Some witty armorer thought to send a message to Royal Navy "Limeys". The writing was done with acrylic red, using a 00 taklon brush:

I dry-fitted the wings and stabilizers... I'm a little disappointed - there is a lot of filling / sanding / re-scribing ahead...

Cheers!

Starting next week i would be far from my bench, so this week i'll make the maximum on my A-36 apaches and my FW 190a-4.

it's the first time that i build a resin cockpit from eduard, and the most of the build is really fun. The only problems came from my tweezers

Gabriel, your Stukas cockpit looks really good. I would not think it's vintage Airfix.

For my build I'll be doing Revells reissue of the Matchbox 1/700 HMS Kelly. Kelly saw brief action in the Med between April-May '41. Wikipedia has this to say:
'In April 1941 she joined HM ships Abdiel, Dido, Jackal, Jersey, Kashmir, Kelvin and Kipling at Gibraltar to form Force S, an escort for reinforcements to the Mediterranean Fleet (Operation Salient). She arrived in Malta on the 28th and was deployed with her flotilla to join Force K for attacks on Axis shipping to North Africa.

On 8 May, following the loss of HMS Jersey to a mine and the subsequent clearance of her wreck, the flotilla left Malta and joined Ajax, Dido, Orion and Perth to escort supply convoys to Egypt and Greece (Operation Tiger). On 10 May she led the destroyers to bombard Benghazi before returning to Malta. On 21 May she was despatched to Crete with Kashmir and Kipling and began patrols north of the island the next day.

On 23 May, during the evacuation of Crete, she was bombed and sunk, with half her crew killed. Kelly did succeed in shooting down three of the attacking Stukas, while another was badly damaged and crashed upon returning to base. The survivors were deeply affected by the loss of their ship; Mountbatten shared their loss and tried to console the ship's company by reminding them all that "We didn't leave the Kelly, the Kelly left us!" '

Kit is typical of most waterline ships of the period. Good detail in general but a little clunky in places. Unlike Japanese kits, Matchbox molded the hull in half with the bottom and deck plates seperate. This can make it tricky to get the deck flush, but with care can be achieved. Matchbox provide some options that allow several different K class destroyers to be built, something I plan on doing as I have several of these kits.

I'll replace some kit parts with Niko Models pom-pom and 4" AA guns, WEM splinter mats and I'll try (I'll stress try ) to add some PE railings.

I'll also add a couple of 20mm Oerlikons from the spares box.

First job though, drilling out the portholes. A long and tedious job.

Also got to have a good look through my paint box as I know I have a tin of WEM Mountbatten pink enamel.

Now, whatever happened to White Ensign Models?

Thank you, Stephen! I don't find the kit all that bad, despite its age. It could have been a good kit actually, if not for the fuselage fitting issues and some crude detail, most noticeable the rear MG and the seats.

The Stukas that attacked and sunk Kelly were Italian or German? I'm doing an Italian one and the decals show some three ships sunk by this aircraft, from 97th Group, 219th Squadron. I am delighted to see a 1/700 ship in the campaign, as I am summoning my courage for a Trumpeter 1/700 Jeremiah O'Brien

UPDATE

I am using the "peripherals" to test my combination of paint / weathering / clear coats. The first one to fall victim to the weathering was the propeller, which have seen some chipping with the sponge method:

The bomb embraced the same fate:

To add some diversity to the build, I chose to weather extremely one of the external fuel tanks and to keep as good as new the other one:

More weathering follows for all those above parts: oil washes, oil staining... so on

As said in the previous post, the fuselage fitting is bad. The following picture shows the underside of the fuselage between the sanding sessions, the "step" between halves being already eliminated, and so the riveting detail

The worst problem is here, around the oil cooler intake: I installed the intake too early and now I don't have full access to the join line - I'm afraid I can't do too much in that spot:

In complete defiance to the fuselage problems, the wing halves fit superbly, with the tiniest amount of flash to be removed. No putty was needed there. The landing light glass was also installed:

In the same note with the wings, the horizontal stabilizers are just too easy to assemble

I am going to use silver enamel for this build as primer and here are the wheels being prepared for round two. Actually the fit of the wheel fairings halves is not as bad as the picture indicates - it was just a hairline join line which I failed to see it on bare plastic - another advantage of priming with silver!

Here's the rear half of the canopy masked. That expoit stretched my skills to maximum but in fact I realized that I cannot glue it in place because the MG isn't ready. And dealing with the machine gun took me the whole of this evening session, because the part is in this edition of the kit a big chunk of flash...

Looking forward to sealing the cockpit and priming the fuselage. On this build I am going to apply the primer on the fuselage before adding the wings, because I am still anticipating sanding and puttying...

Cheers!

Looking really good Gabriel!

I'm having an existential crisis. While I love Hurricanes and the 1/32 Fly kit is going pretty well, I keep getting siren calls from:

I have an older AeroMaster sheet for an 815 Sqn. aircraft at Taranto. Must... resist... changing... build!

i have that kit too michael. LHS miss priced it at $20 so i jumped on it. found out though the lower wings have a downward droop to them. if you do this kit let me know how you remedied it please.

hi gabriel i built this kit too and found it not a bad fitting kit and it has the right look and stance. i don't recall having any problems with the fuselage or oil cooler fit. i did attach the intake just before painting though (btw i think that is the regular intake not the trop you have there). the worst part of this kit is the raised rivet detail on the wings, lack of cockpit detail, also you will probably find out the dive brakes attach poorly (mine keep breaking off) and the bomb cradle doesn't really have any connection/pivot point on the fuselage. but i did enjoy the build. look forward to seeing the finished build- joe

btw i have several of these kits in my stash if anyone wants to build one. i need to make some room. i originally was going to make a dio with them but i don't think that will happen so i would like to find a home for them.

Hi guys. I wanted to share few update photos but first I have to ask if I am still allowed to participate in this campaign since I , by mistake, deleted entry photo with date and model in the box.

Paint on

Hi, Joe! Thank you for coming along! I am with you in this one: the kit has definitely more positives than negatives. In my example, the main issue was the fact that the right side of the fuselage is thicker with some 1/3mm in the rear, after radio operator's seat. It cannot be forced flush from the top because there is a bulkhead that makes sure the halves are flush from inside. The oil cooler fits seamlessly - the engine cover does not and, because I have installed the intake too early, I banned myself the access to the resulting seam between the engine cover and the right side of the fuselage. It can be done, but the loss of detail will be too extensive, and I guess I have to live with a poor fitting engine cover - not unusual on the real aircraft.
I finished masking the canopies and dry-fit them - it seems OK but a small gap will remain between the rear end of the canopy and the fuselage proper - I will make the pictures when I get thru with gluing the canopy. Another small issues is the lack of support for rear MG - the kit is designed to have the crew in place and the support for MG should be the arms of radio operator. Because I have decided not to do the crew, the MG will sit very precariously in its slit with a very small contact surface between the mounting ball and the bubble glass. Another annoyance is the pin marks on the flaps - three of them, with the raised river detail right over them. Again, some serious detail will be lost there and the parts are flimsy and delicate. Nothing that a little patience cannot solve.
Based on our dialog, this kit might appear rather repugnant but, in all fairness, it's rather not. As you pointed out: very nice airframe shape and proportions and a good solid build with clever engineering for most of the parts. It worth it every penny - it wasn't expensive as I can recall - I have it since three years myself I estimate. The issues we mentioned above are rather common issues for the aircraft build, shouldn't be held as particular for this one.
I'll be posting soon some pictures with the closed canopy and hopefully with the first coat of primer.

Cheers!

Hi, guys!

UPDATE

The canopy masked with Tamiya masking tape 10mm and attached to the airframe with Micro Krystal Klear:

Although the fitting is good, there are still a couple of places where the canopy doesn't seal completely. No problem for the modeler that wants to represent the canopy open - I thing the kit was design with that intention in mind:

Talking about the gaps: here you can see the most obvious of them, where the rear of the canopy meets the fuselage. Not a problem to seal it up, thanks to Airfix clever engineering:

I masked off the prepainted areas and the transparent surfaces using pieces of household sponge (no, pink it is not my colour )

After Micro Kristal Klear set, I sprayed Vallejo Air RLM02 over the canopy:

Finally (for today that is) I primed the fuselage. I chose to prime the fuselage alone first, because I was still expecting some sanding and puttying and the wings are much better with regard to the fitting. I will attach them before the second primer coat. To be honest, I have less problems than anticipated: only the canopy edges that I knew about already and a seam line to the bottom of the fuselage so thin that I cannot get a decent picture of it but needs to be addressed nonetheless:

I really like how Mr. Hobby Finishing Surfacer 1500 works!

Next I need to re-scribe the lost detail and to deal with the hairline join lines and attach the wings and stabilizers.

Cheers!

hi gabriel. i think i sanded the flaps smooth on mine, i will have to check. i don't remember having that much of a ridge on the top cowl either but maybe i did and don't remember sanding it smooth. either that or those parts just happened to line up better in my kit. your right about the machine gun in the rear but so far i have not had any problem with it breaking off. as for the canopy, the gun is one of the reasons i temporarily glued it to the fuselage for painting with white glue then popped it off after painting to install the gun. also because of my cammo pattern made it easier to paint on the plane. my impression of the canopy was it was intended to stay closed. i would have liked to add an aftermarket cockpit but it would have required cutting the canopy up, plus i couldn't find an afteremarket cockpit. i will try to remember to post a photo of my kit when i get home.

That's a fine looking 88 Bogi!

Time for my first photo entry on this campaign...
Building a Overtree edition of Eduard's bf.109 F-4, using some Kagero decals mixed with Xtradecals main insignias to build it as a Jg.27 Tropicalised version in 1942. Upon the kit's completion I'll post along a couple of photos of the actual machine I'll be trying to depict during the next few weeks.

Fist plastic cut off the sprues and the first spray of the main interior colors, rom 66 and 02. a second spray used a somewhat whiter shade of the base color so as to get a bit of depth. weathering with oils and dry brush will follow shortly.

Tried to use some chipping fluid on the back of the propeller blades but the scrubbing was a bit excessive, so some repaint will be necessary.

Pedro

Bogi, nice piece. One day I will build one (coughing) Yes, in tandem with the half-track looks spot on! Congrats for finishing!

Pedro, that would have been my entry if I wouldn't choose the Picchiatello (Weekend Edition). Looks great so far!

UPDATE
I know I had some three days of absence, but only because I was too taken with the build

I had a persistent seam line on the ventral part of the fuselage, which I needed to deal with:

Some other bits and pieces needed some attention as well:

After I sanded the excess putty, I attached the wings and the stabilizers. A minimal gap remained on the underside part of the joint, easily sorted out with Vallejo acrylic putty

One of the stabilizers also needed the tiniest amount of acrylic putty:

I applied to the superior wing joints from the principle "better safe than sorry" but I don't think was all the necessary - barely any putty was left behind the cotton swab:

I glued then the ailerons / flaps. These are one of the worst parts from the kit, with lots of flash, uncertain shape and prominent pin marks on the underside. One of the "hinges" also does not align properly on the right wing.

I tried out some re-scribing. I didn't manage the best of the jobs, but at least I didn't cause a catastrophe!

The riveting fall also short of perfect still learning the trade:

With all that done, I primed the entire model with Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 50% with MLT

To be honest, I was anticipating a worst result I have still a few spots to fiddle with and I will be ready for a under-coat of Rust-oleum Aluminum!

Thank you for following up!

More updates in the making!

Cheers!

A bit more progress to report on the M3 project. A pal recommended a Krylon paint and it is really flat. If I had rub on transfers it might have been perfect. As it is, I'll have to gloss it up for decals.

I'll get the gloss on it later today and decals from a BISON set later this week.

pedro, that is exactly what i am doing for this campaign. i just got an eduards 109 f4 overtree and am collecting decals to do franz stigler's 109 from afrika. there is some questions about what color was his 12 white or yellow. the book says white 12 but if you look at the photos in the book the 12 looks closer to the shade of the yellow cowl. anyone know for sure?
