So without further ado I present Wing Commander Douglas Bader's Spitfire Mk VA in 1/48 scale

For this model, i've used AK real colors, and the IFF bands are airbrushed.

Franck, I like the camo colors and your IFF lines are nice and square.

Rory, I looked over your post sorry. The Spit is a looker.

I tried to use some Tamiya tape to mask the Accurate Miniatures P-51A canopy, but cracked a rear piece. Tried to locate some masks for this kit with no luck.

Does anyone have knowledge where to obtain a set of masks for above canopy?

Rory, wonderful Spit! Congrats on that build! But I think Bader flew a Mk. II not a Mk. V. But maybe I'm wrong ....

Douglas Bader had "opinions". When his unit transferred to the VB he opted to get a VA as he didn't trust/believe in the 20mm Hispanos and they didn't suit his tactic.

This comes from the wiki page on him.

"During 1941 his wing was re-equipped with Spitfire VBs, which had two Hispano 20 mm cannon and four .303 machine guns. Bader flew a Mk VA equipped with eight .303 machine guns, as he insisted that these guns were more effective against fighter opposition. His tactics required a close-in approach in which he felt the lower caliber weapons had a more devastating effect. At the time, RAF trials with wing-mounted cannons had also revealed a number of shortcomings that precluded a widespread acceptance of the armament"

Douglas Bader was a real character and is my favourite fighter pilot (closely followed by Franz Stigler and Robin Olds). I encourage anyone who doesn't know his story to look him up. This is a man who had no legs, was a 22 kill ace, escaped from POW camps a few times (always recaptured sadly) and ended up becoming good friends with Adolf Galland.

Torsten, your Bf109 is beautiful as have been your other builds.

I had stalled on the P-51A since I could not find the landing light and one gun had broke off. Found the lens cover then messed up and had to use regular glue and sand it to shape. Used styrene rod for the gun, but still need to do a little surgery to make it look like the others.

The 109 G6 Wilde Sau has decals, fresh coat of gloss.....ready for assembly and weathering....

Well mates, as this campaign got a generous extension, I decided to do another one, here is my second entry:


I will build the plane of Stanislaw Skalski, Polish ace, but will probably leave out the D-Day stripes, because they disturb the clean impression of the plane a little. Well, maybe...

The canopy mask arrived and it was easy and a lot faster then using tamiya tape.

Good progress over the weekend with my Mustang...

Well, I was feeling pretty good about the 1/32 Z-M P-51K, until I tried to put the engine panels on and then attach the tail. Sometimes too much detail is NOT a good think. Sigh. So, here at the last minute, I'm going to try something different. A dual build of 1/48 razorback Mustangs for this campaign and the Mighty Eighth Campaign. My chosen instruments:



For this campaign, I'll be doing the P-51C of Capt. Wendell Pruitt of the 302nd FS, 332 FG using the Tamiya kit. Back when I originally bought the kit, I picked up the Jaguar interior to fix the curved floor problem, so I'll be using that too:





We'll see how this goes!

As I said, I left the D-Day stripes alone, it would have been a little bit too much for this small fighter imho...maybe with another P-51? So this shows W/Cdr Skalski's ride before 6th of June '44.
I cut out three kill markings from the decal(21 kills), because Skalski shot at least two enemy planes down after D-Day.

Peter, beautiful P-51. I always had trouble with the yellow leading edge. More so than the Dday stripes.

I have finally pulled out my airbrushes and settled on he Pascche to spray some Future my P-51A. I must admit that I do not remember if I had thinned it or just sprayed the Future from the bottle and at what air pressure.
