Here is an instructor's Nieuport 24 of the 31st Aero at Issoudon 1918.

The figure is a Jaguar body with a head sculpted by Justin of the old Jager models in Glasgow. Though he has gone out of business these may be available from Copper State Models.

I see that the diligence is shining strong in your works my fellow aviator...
I hope that you get a chance to a nice early morning flight in your creations, all while the sun is rising above the horizon. just be careful while you fly so that you don't get too philosophical and travel to far over the lines....

Here is a Nieuport 17 from Naval Escadrille N.312 with the twin Lewis arrangement.

The figure is a modified Mike Good's Jaguar item from the WWII Italian figure set. I did some streamlining of the flight suit down to a WWI configuration. This figure has a great "personality that comes through in the facial expression. My nit pick about my own build here is that I should have stayed closer to the factory aluminum doped rather than a Naval grey look.

The story of Nieuport N2779 is a unique one. Flown by Lt. Rene Carre' of Escadrille N.112 and brought down by the German pilot Ltn. Pfifer. N2779 was later test flown by Ltn. Pfifer and the wings were seen to fold back in flight. Ltn Pfifer was killed in the crash flying the aircraft he brought down in the first place.

The kits is the Eduard 1/48 Nieuport 17 and the figure is the French pilot offered in the Eduard Nieu. 11 kit.

Ltn Stark of Jasta 35b and his mid production Fokker D.VII (OAW) 4523/18.

Though this 1/48 Jager kit and figure that came with it are out of production it is a memorable piece and worthy of inclusion here.

Hi Steve,

If memory serves, "Black Maria" ( Mari-ah) was a term coined in the first half of the 19th c. for criminal-transport wagons (paddy-wagons).

Greetings Augie,
You are very close but... a "paddy wagon" was the term used for a motorized prisoner transport van. There is some thought that "Black Maria" it first originated in Boston Mass 1830's. With New Scotland Yard in the early 1900's used the term to describe a heavily armoured Q-car (carriage.) The Metroploitan Police originated in 1829 and their first vehicle of any kind was, acquired in 1858. This is the earliest known use for the term "Black Mariah" in relationship to a vehicle.

The key is what kind of carriage?

Then for the fun of it ask yourself how does that relate to a Sopwith Triplane?

Augie, you are the only one to try, so let me know which download you want.

The answer is:
'Black Maria' was the nickname for secure police vans with separate locked cubicles, used for the transportation of prisoners...The Met's first vehicle of any kind was a Black Maria drawn by two dray horses, acquired in 1858.
