On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
_ _
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

I remember a Christmas long ago 1966 or 67'. I was with my mom & dad in Durango CO. In a local dept store I saw a display / stack of toy Castles made in W. Gerrmany. "King Arthur's Castle". My mom saw my enthusiasm and she bought the set and had is flown to Cortez CO. (An hour by car but the snow was heavy that year and they were still clearing it away.) When we moved to TX in 68'. It went with me and after about 5 moves it did not survive. Now look what I found.

I've just noticed that my post count has pushed my little rank marking up to the exalted heights of Major General. In celebration thereof, I give you this little song (with apologies to Messers Gilbert and Sullivan)
I am an Aeroscale model modern Major-General
I've information model building, painting and of finishing
I know the kits of Airfix, and I quote the lists
historical
From Monogram to Tamiya, in order categorical
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters vacuformable
I understand of resins, both the home-made and of store-bought, too
About scratch-building theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news
With many cheerful facts about repair parts anyone can use
With many cheerful facts about repair parts anyone can use

I'm very good at sanding and of filling up the seams that lurk

Winter is making an early appearance on the Left Coast.
The menu for today will be Butternut Squash and Apple soup, followed by a nice hot curry over Basmati rice with mango Lassi
Tonights movie will be Holiday Inn. It's not Christmas until Bing sings this.

Back by popular demand. From 2 years ago.
Merlin was dead for 7 years. This must be clearly understood otherwise nothing wonderous can come from this tale.
As conciousness returns I find myself in the back of the Hammick room. second level. My head hurts and as I check my cellphone. Dec . 21! . . .the last thing I remember it was Nov. 29?! Ouch! my head hurts in 2 places. . .
There was a pie fight. . . But as I move to the dining area the place is spotless. clean as a whistle.
As I stood behind the bar a lone burdened figure walked through the door. And I mean walked through the closed door. He was loaded down with bearing hundreds of unopend model kit boxes each one heavily taped to the other. Lightning ripped across the winter sky outside. As the apparition moved to the bar I stood as if rooted to the floor unable to move. He didn't look too good either. A bit knackered and floating about two inches from the cafe floor.
Me - Who are you?
Ghost - Ask me who I was. . .
Me - Merlin?
Ghost - Follow directions will you?!
Me - Ok, ok who were you then?
Ghost - In life I was you managing Editor. MERLIN! (More lightning.)
Me - So your out for a stroll?
Ghost - No! I suffer because I can't get these kits off my back. By the way your going to suffer the visits of three other ghosts. It will all happen in one night and whatever you do don't tick off the last one. He's always a bit edgy round this time of the year. Expect the first at 1AM the second at 2am and the 3rd at 5AM his schedule is really full this time of year. And oh! Did I mention whatever you do don't tick off the last one. Thats important.
Me- You want a beer?
Ghost - Yeah sure.
As I handed him a pint of Guiness dark he took it and drank it down to the last drop. But as it passed his lips it poured straight through him. Nother rmess to clean up. Then he was gone. I got the mop bucket and mop out. The clock chimed quarter past, half past then the hour itself. I I had just finished mopping up. As I looked over into the corner booth where Terri usually nests I see someone resembling Terri. But its not Terri. A tremendous bright light shines about. The flame on the top pf the spirit's head pierced the darken cafe.
Me - Could you turn down that spot light over there?
2nd Ghost - Hey! I don't see any other lights on. You forget to pay the light bill?
Me - Are you the ghost I was supposed to meet with at 1AM?
2nd Ghost - You catch on pretty quickly eh, Hoser?
Me - Great a Canadian ghost of Christmas long past. . .
2nd Ghost - No your past. Now touch my robe and that is not a free pass to grope!
The night gave way to the coming dawn and I was transported back to 1964.
End of Act I
In the light of the coming dawn we landed back in Cortez CO. in the winter of 1964. The spirit and I were standing at 502 N. Market street out side the house I lived in as a child. There was 2 and a half feet of snow on the ground and I could see myself as a child infront the Christmas tree waiting impatiently for the time when all attention turned to opening presents.
An hour later amid the shredded colourful paper I was stacking Models Revell big three 1:28 WWI Sopwith Camel, Spad XIII and that beautious Fokker Dr.I. There were others as well. Columbus' Santa Maria, The Golden Hind and the USS Constitution. Another box contained the Blue Angels 5 aircraft set. My first set of reference material was a set of the American Heritage books. . . while there were other gifts It was the Revell big three that I immediately grew to treasure.
2nd Ghost - Pretty happy then eh hoser?
Me - Of course that is when I learned the joys of model building.
2nd Ghost - Did you build them all?
Me - Yes it was great!
2nd Ghost - Miss anything ?
Me - Glue. . .there wasn't a tube of modeling glue anywhere in the house.
2nd Ghost - So what did you learn?
Me - Elmer's glue and school paste are a poor substitute.
2nd Ghost - you ate the paste didn't you?
Me - well it. . .hey thats enough take me home.
I woke with a jolt in my own bed and needing to visit the WC for the 3rd time that night.. Its tough getting older.
As I found relief bracing myself against the wall infront of me and reaching for the flush valve handle a bright light shown in through the edges of the closed door. Stephen. . .Stephen Lawson. . .! Come in and know me better stud!

That voice. . .it was a woman's voice. . .Ursula!!? As I stepped into the living room area there on a throne surrounded by bounty and horn's of plenty was a beautiful woman clad in green velvet and white fur. Impossible as I knew it could be yet here she was. The staff she carried emminated a sweet scent and the ambiant joy beaming from the lovely 30 something face let me know I had nought to dread.
Me - uh hello. . .
3rd Ghost - Surprised?
Me- Well I expected someone just not someone so lovely. . .
3rd Ghost - Alright you silver tongued stud muffin lets do this. . .
Just when I was bracing myself for a very warm fuzzy experience I was rocked by the sounds of church bells ringing across the city and echoing into the foothills of the Rocky Mtns. As I opened my eyes I was standing in the hallway of the Oncology ward at Children's Hospital. Suddenly she waved her torch and the dark hallways were enhanced with festive holiday decorations and the nurse's station FM radio was playing Christmas music. I saw then a wonderous site. The jolly old elf hisself was moving from room to room leaving presents in each room. As the early morning hours gave way to dawn's first light I could hear cries of joy pealing through the hallway. Nurses sharing coffee and cookies talking around the radio.
Nurse 1 - Did you see that? models and books, acrylic paints and tube glue for each child. Movies and food. Every parent being here even from hundreds of miles away.
Nurse 2 - Never saw anything like this. . .
Nurse 1 - It always seems to happen . . .round here.
Fading back to focus on my current spirit guide.
Me - So is there question?
3rd Ghost - Miss anything ?
Me - No we got it all this year.
3rd Ghost - So what did you learn?
Me - Hospital Care and sterile environments are a poor substitute for happiness for a child.
3rd Ghost - Look I'm not opening my robe so just know that dealing with ignorance and want goes beyond Christmas day - right?!
Me - Right.
3rd Ghost - Are you ready for the next fellow?
Me - Are any of us ready for the Ghost of Christmas future? By the way about that robe thing. . .
3rd Ghost - No time for that. . .
Suddenly I was . . .

Lighgtning ripped through the midnight sky. The thunder rolled like the sounds of a battery on mission. Between the lightening flashes I could see the terrain was rough and hard. The churned up ground looked like there could be little or nothing that could ever grow. Suddenly it was there at my side. Tall and shrouded in black. The boney hand pointed ahead and we moved slowly together.
I noticed that there was no sign of life ahead of us but behind the dawn was rising. But it never seemed to catch us. Then I came to understand. There is no life in the future and it exists only in the here and now. The past holds only fading images of our lives. Then we stopped my companion turned to me and threw back the cowl of his shroud.
It was the wildeyed Christopher Lloyd.(Emmett L. Brown). He glared directly at me and siad, "Your future hasn't been written yet so make it a good one!"
Then I could see it. Live your lives in faith and hope. Do no harm, speak no evil.
Suddenly I was in the back of a huge sleigh, As I crawled over the bags of all different model kits I could see him all in red with white fur. But he wore shorts and was bare foot. On his long winter's cap I could see the monogram "PJ". I could hear him call the reindeer by name. "Now Fokker, now RAF, Albatros and Gotha. On Roland, on Pfalz, on Hansa and Sopwith! To the top of the roof to the top of the wall now dash away dash away all! . . " Now as I settled in, we drove through the night. He shout "Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night, Model On!"

No worries we had an empty chair and a plate of goodies for you. It did dissappear though. . .We just got it cleaned up from the New Year's party. I am here just baking my birthday cake. It is a 7 layer German chocolate cake. Word has it I am getting another WNW Fokker D.VII. Its the OAW kit I am told.
