Hi all!
July 1st marks the start of the "Stars of the VVS" Campaign. Remember, to participate, you have to build a model of a Soviet/Russian aircraft which wears... red stars! The precise rules for the Campaign can be found in the Official Campaign page here.
I will be the Campaign Leader for this one and my co-pilot will be Mark Robinson (oleander13) who submitted the idea for this Group Build. I hope we will have many participants and don't forget to enlist if you want to receive this ribbon at the end!
Za rodinu!

I have just joined up. Am I correct in assuming modern aircraft, such as, say, a MiG-29, are eligible, as long as it has red stars on it?
Posted: Sunday, July 01, 2007 - 06:39 AM UTC
Yes,
it has to be Russian or Soviet and have a red star on it. Type of aircraft is free (so also lend and lease a/c or e.g. L-29 Delfin or L-39 Albatros .. but no Chinese, North Korean or Vietnamese (etc.) markings
cheers

Da Komrades!
I remember when I was an instructor pilot and I met Kossack kutie back in 1919. We had a wonderful Konversation. Eduard's kit 8073.
My choices will be either a Fokker D.VII or a Nieuport 24 -27. I will have to check my decal stash. (Maybe both.)
The image in the upper right corner is a Russian pilot's badge from 1920.

Hi Ted,
Good ribbon.
I build ICM Alanger Yak-9K in 1/72 scale. I think.
Let me introduce yours incredible Alanger kit .
Good box art.
Kit contains approximately 25 parts.
Clear and other parts badly molded.
Only good side decals. Very thin.
Sorry for my bad english.

Hi all!
It seems there is some movement on the Russian front!
Steffen, thanks for answering Tony's question. Again, for precise rules, go to the Official Campaign page.
Stephen, don't forget the red stars on your Russian biplans!
Ayhan, nice one!
I will build the LaGG-3 from South Front (review here)...

Hi all!
Great introduction and a very nice ribbon, Jean-Luc!
I have already enlisted for this Campaign, but as I have a P-47 Thunderbolt (Down Low Campaign), and a F-14A Tomcat (Tomcat Campaign), to build I´ll be a bit slow in the start.
Or should I put It; I´ll give you a bit of a handicap?
Good thing, though, as I have not decided what to build yet!
Hmmm.... , Pe-2 (MPM 1/48), Il-2 (Eduard 1/48), Yak-3 (ICM 1/48), MiG-15 (Tamiya 1/48 or Trumpeter 1/32), Mig-19C (Trumpeter 1/32), Mig-21F-13 (Trumpeter 1/32), Su-27 (Academy 1/48), MiL-2 (special Hobby 1/48), MiL-24 Hind (Trumpeter 1/48).... Ohhhhhh...Help!
Looking forward to this Campaign, Camrades!
Cheers!

Loads of Campaigns to get stuck into, and luckily Im just starting my summer break,,(its like the summer school holiday when I was a kid!)
I bought the Hasegawa Hurricane MKIIB Red Star ages ago from Ebay.
I presume this will be eligible Jean Luc?
This must be a rare old kit as I havent been able to find the box art anywhere on the web to post a photo.

Heres a photo of the boxart for my entry.Hasegawas Hurricane IIB in 1:72 scale.
Ive made a start painting the cockpit area.Hardly any detail in the kit.Just a seat, control stick and a decal for the instument panel. But seeing as the canopy is in one piece with no option for displaying it open Im just going to paint it up and add some seatbelts from Tamiya masking tape. The wings are also glued together and curing.
I'll be working on this in between wrestling with parts on my old Airfix Tiger Moth trying to clean them up and get them to fit,and Im also doing a quick oob of one of the RAF refuelling set for the Best Of British campaign on Armorama.( A good incentive for building a vehicle now and again,,they may come in handy for a diorama one day)

As usual Im a bit confused,,but Im sure your all used to that by now.
The colours called for on the instruction sheet for this Hurricane are..dark green/ocean grey topside, medium sea grey underside.
Would these be the same colours as used on RAF fighters?
My research so far not surprisingly is only turning up photos of models, and there seems to be quite a mixture of greys and greens in the photos.
Secondly,,would these machines have been delivered in RAF markings,,( minus squadron codes if they were new), and have these painted over before application of the red stars?

Hi Nigel
research a bit more and you'll find that some were even operated by British pilots (and of course in that case wore the appropriate markings) ... no you cannot build those as you have to put on "Red Stars" .
I would think that most were delivered in RAF colors. Maybe have a look at the AML decal sheet. There is also a two seater conversion with an additional gun for the backseater:
Soviet Hurricanes Part 1: http://www.aml.cz/en/AD7209-1.html
Soviet Hurricanes Part 2: http://www.aml.cz/en/AD7210-1.html
btw AML has lots of nice Soviet WW2 decals!
HTH a little
best wishes

Here is a picture of my entry - the Eduard Yak-3.
Looks like a very nice kit with masks, lots of decals, PE in one box at a very reasonable price. So many great colour schemes to choose from. Good there are two planes in the box

Thanks Stefan.
I already have the Red Stars for my kit
During my research I came across the site dedicated to modelling the VVS
Very interesting reading.
It seems that a lot of the Hurricanes delivered to the VVS were either new or refurbished airframes. These would have carried roundels and fin markings but no squadron codes. These would have been painted out on arrival and I intend to replicate this on my Hurricane.
The only Tamiya paints I could find to match the shades of grey are listed as spray cans with no pot of acrylic equivalent, so Im going to have to use Humbrol enamels on this model for the first time in well over a year.
Jesper,,that Eduard Yak looks a great kit!
Im working on bits and pieces of my entry at the moment but I have the Airfix Tiger Moth (troublesome as always) and another campaign entry (no wings!) to finish first.

Hi all
I daren't commit (I've made that mistake too often! ) but I'd love to join this Campaign... if all goes well I'll either submit a Rest Models kit or - in view of all the Lavochkins, this could be the perfect excuse to finish the Vector La-5F:
All the best

Rowan, I would have thought that you would have chosen the Polikarpov R-5sss instead of the La-5F...
Keep the entries coming guys!

Hi Jean-Luc
You're wicked and you know me too well! That is the other big contender to build! But the La-5 is a more realistic option if I have any free time to build something.
All the best
