Mark Sharpe official Modern Campaign Thread
Posted: Saturday, September 01, 2007 - 07:42 AM UTC
Hi all...
This will be the "official" thread for the Mark Sharpe Modern Aircraft Campaign. If you need to know the exact rules of this Group Build, you can take a look here.
To sum up, the goal of this special Campaign is to honor Joe Szczygielski's (mother) son-in-law Mark Sharpe by building a modern military aircraft, with focus on Helicopters and Jets.
I will be the Campaign Leader of this Group Build but since I'm not a modern aircraft specialist I will need all your help and support on this one! Every participant who will be able to finish a model for this Campaign will be awarded a simple ribbon with the name of Mark sharpe on it.
I hope it will be featured on the profile page of many Aeroscale members...

This campaign is going to be something completely different for me. Well, not exactly completely, for at least something I haven't done in years, a modern aircraft model.
I feel kind of embarassed, the first post in the thread, and here I'm asking about if a certain model can be entered.
I don't know if the rules have been fine-tuned since I entered, or that I didn't pay attention to the fine print (most likely...).
Can I enter a Mig-21F-13 in Finnish markings?
Since the models' subjects have to be aircraft still in use, is it okay to build that mig, a plane not anymore operated by FAF, but still used by other countries?

Hi!
I will enter this campaign with this kit;
I´ll build this Italeri´s SH-60B Seahawk in 1/48 as I know Joe loves choppers (and so do I!).
It will be spiced up with a Eduard etch set and new decals.
That ribbon will be perfect for this campaign, simple and nice!
Cheers!

Hi Eetu!
I'm going to allow that. The rules won't be too strict anyway given the special nature of this Campaign. Primary goal is to honor Mark Sharpe by building a Modern subject. I won't nitpick...
I will build the French Rafale C prototype. Technically speaking it is not used by the Armée de l'Air neither.
A review of the kit by Rowan Baylis (Merlin) can be found here by the way.

Thanks Stefan. I indeed wanted the ribbon to be simple. Nice kit choice by the way...

Appreciate it. Thanks.
Well, here's the kit I'll be building, Revell's recent (if you can call it that anymore) Mig-21F-13.
I couldn't keep my hands off aftermarket parts, but I won't go overboard with them. Part's PE set and quickboost's resin intake plus eduard masks.
I'll be starting this entry after my T-34 (also Finnish btw).

Jean-Luc...Thanks
I'm in, I'll be finishing up Marks 1/48th F-105D and I'll be entring a 1/48th AMT S-3A Viking. Mark was always fascinated when coming into the model room. He was building a F-105D at the time of his passing. So I’m going to finish it for him…. I'll be looking so forward to be seeing all the Aircraft and Helicopters during this campaign.
Jean you will have all the help needed, no short of answers here as all of our members are well experienced.

Hi James!
You can do both! One for the ribbon and the other for the fun...
By the way, thanks for accepting to be co-leader of this Campaign.

Hi All
I am tempted to take part in this campaign. But as I am in the middle of a move - physically and psychological - I will not enlist until I know I can make it
It does not help that I have to do a red star, two meat balls, a "silver" jet (luckily I prevented enlisting for the Malvinas operation) and a Steyr for an Armorama campaing ... and then there is the shelfsitter campaign which I hope to use for a few half dead projects (runs until 6/2008).
In case I find the time I would like to build one of these (or both):
in FACh markings
all the best and go(o)d speed

Hai,
I join with a Hasegawa Apache in 1/48 scale.
At least if I can find the building instructions somewhere
In any case, It will be very very difficult to finalise this on 31 February

Why?
You can finish your model in January...
I will change the end date of course... Thanks for the heads up.

Hi all,
I'll be joing this campaign with this kit.
A 1:35th Scale from MRCAcademy. The kit looks good and has lot detail to offer, but I was looking for a kit review for this model. Just cant find one. Need Information what other detail I could possibly add on this kit.
Possible I'll be building this kit OOB with some few scratch built details. Aftermarket part were over my budget.
The kit offer a decal for 4th Squadron, 17th Squadron (Early '90s). The unit was already reflagged as 4th Squadron, 6th CAV. I coud not find photograph regarding 4th Squadron, 17th Squadron. Anyone Knows were I could find pictures of this unit?
I was thinking if could I make one kit from Task Force 118 during Operation Prime Chance.
Thanks c",)

Pictures will follow at a later date.

Hi all!
I post a picture just as a proof that I started to build a modern jet. My first since... 25 years perhaps!
I started to glue some parts together and applied some filler mainly to hide sink marks or ejector pins marks. The overall quality of the surface is good, but some preparation work will give a smoother finish to the model once completed.
Is there someone else who made a start?

...And I thought I haven't built a modern plane for ages!
The last jet I completed must have been some 8 years ago (give or take). I mean that era when I ran amok painting tomcats screamin' red etc.
Since my early building days, the closest I've made is dabbling with a 1:72 mig-29. (still in the box, got a little demoralized by the "interesting" fit in some places).
Btw, do you think I could finish it up for the VVS campaign?

Hi Eetu!
You already finished a very nice entry for the Campaign so I think I can accept your already started Mig-29 without hesitation!

A short update on my L-39 Albatros. I have finished construction. It was straight forward, but the fit of the fuselage halves needed some careful sanding to align properly.
I have also decided on a camouflage scheme of a two tone green with light grey undersides and some cool looking Tiger markings on the tail and wing tips. I simply cannot resist that colour scheme.

A short update on my Albatros. I have applied the base coat, the light grey underside coat and the top light green coat. Next time I will leave the drop tanks of until I have masked and painted them
Next is the yellow for the tiger markeings on the nose, tail stabilisers, top tail rudder and the wingtips. Especially the wing tips is going to be interesting as it is difficult to mark the yellow areas so they fit the tiger stribe decals exactly. Anyway, I will have to give it a try.
