Thanks, Ocsi. I appreciate your post.
Here's all of the control horns on the parts.
A little more reinforcing with superglue and future and I'll start constructing the tail.
More soon,
Mark

Well here you go Terri. I've Elmer glued the tail together so I can line everything up correctly and disassemble it later to reposition the parts. Then I superglued the front strut to the tail only.
And checked the over all fit with the rudder..............
and the aileron.................
More soon,
Mark

Mark would you say that because of its sturdy const and versatility that the M.5 served in so many services? From the Urals to the Med you can see it in several countries national markings and even a few with modifications.

Stephen,
The Grigorovich M-5 was a very good airframe. It was designed after Grigorovich worked on a damaged French-made Donnet-Leveque flying boat that was brought into the Shchetinin factory for a fast repair. The first prototype was manufactured in April of 1915 and some M-5's remained in service through the middle of the 1920's. In December of 1925, 22 training M-5's were recorded as serving with the Soviet Air Force. One interesting thing I read was that the wings, stabilizer and vertical tail were made of pine with the rudders and elevators being constructed of thin walled steel tubing. This layout "did not provide sufficient stiffness: in turns the tail unit twisted noticeably and vibrated, but never failed." Could you imagine flying at 10,000 feet and watching the tail twist in a turn? These guys sure had a lot of nerve.

Terri,
Not much since the last post. I'm taking Master's classes at the local University and my finals and Performance jury is tomorrow so I've been studying and practicing every spare second. Wish me luck. I can't wait to finish the Grig and start on the SE5a.
More very soon,
Mark

Thanks fro the well wishes Terri and Jean-Luc. Everything went very well today. I received may compliments from the faculty on my performance of Villa-Lobos 'Suite Populaire Bresilienne" along with Choro No.1 on classical guitar. So I am now "on the other side" of this semester. Time to get modelling.

Terri,
This one is on hold for a few days while I finish the SE5a for the group build. I'm still test fitting the tailplane and making turnbuckles but nothing to really post yet.

Hi everyone,
I got in the material to finish the tail. And I have next week off for Spring Break. Fortunately, the Grig survived the move without damage (one other aircraft of mine was not so lucky). Thanks for checking in. I'll have more at the beginning of the week.

Yes, I know, sorry about that. It should be a quick finish for the tail surfaces. The only thing I can't seem to come up with are decals for the fuselage serial number. I'll have to make them for myself..... but that is something I would like to be able to do anyway.

I've got the tail reconstructed and gave it one coat of bleached linen to check for any blemishes. Here's the test fit. The supports for the tail were metal tube instead of wood struts, so these will be painted flat black.

Hi,
I'm glad it was of some help. It sure is a fun build. The tail got damaged in my last move to my new house last fall. Nothing really major but there is some rigging to repair. Kind of disheartening because it's like re-spinning a spider web. It's on my "to complete" list for this Spring. Stay tuned.................
