As far as I remember my phisics lessons "sonic boom" starts in front of the plane and then the plane flies through the "wall" between the zones with different air presure.

Vance - thanks a lot for very good description of the shock thing. I have master degree in electrical engineering and most of phisics I've learned concerned electro-magnetics... Fluid dynamincs was something we did not focus on (as you can see).
Thanks again for explenaining of this shock-cone-transonic-vapor-flying thing.
