Looks nice Richard.
Well over the last couple of days the postie brought two parcels one from Eduard with bunny club discount and another from Spain of some display bases.
F-4 weapon set, Ka-50 pe set.
Still in their protective sleeves, these have a blue-black mottle effect and are on thick plasticard being designed for 1/48.

Some of the stuff I got yesterday and friday.
Zvezday Pe-2 looks very nice though I am not too happy with their rivets.
The french KG 100 book is very good (many pictures!)!! Too bad I do not read french .. hope it will be published in english too! and Volume 6 of Blumax Airmen is like the rest of the series .. worth every cent!
I also got some older Quickboost stuff and IDF F-16A masks...
all the best
Steffen

I also just got Zvezda's Pe-2. That kit is amazing I must say. The fit is absolute excellent as Tamiya could be. Inside of the wheel bays even the motor block is simulated, while you can see it. There are a lot of small details where Zvezda has paid attention to. Love that kit. The only bad things are the decals, there are weak.

Here is a very extensive review of the kit:

(sadly my russian is too bad to understand it, though I believe I understand that Rakovs planes camo is not fully clear)
cheers

When I came home from work today, postie had put something in my mailbox ....
.... including a fantastic decal sheet ....
All I need now are some Thunderbolts. I have about 10 in my stash already, but now I need 7 more ....
Torsten
Torsten,
17 Jugs just might be a record. I say go for it. I've got two and plan on 2 more.

Got this nice kit in the mail today
Only let down for me is the Swedish crown markings that they've got totally wrong, but an easy thing to replace.
And looking forward to comparing it to Pilot Replicas kit that will be released in about a month.

Nice one, Thomas. I also think about getting this kit to join my Draken ....
Joel, you don't know how many P-47 decal sets I have ....
Gary, I've just had a look at my stash. I have finished 3 Thunderbolts (N, D Bubbletop and Razorback) plus another 14 in that big pile ..... I plan to build 2 early next year for the 56. FG Campaign. To my defense I must admit, that last year I had the chance to buy 6 Hasegawa and Tamiya P-47 plus 2 decal sheets from an inheritance for little money. An idiot, who would let that chance go unused. We are all maniacs, are we?

Correct, you can never have too many Jugs! I think I have 6 in 1/48, one hangar queen in 1/32 and the big 1/24 which I barely started.
Enjoy the book Torsten, it has some great info and images.
Cheers, D

As much as I like the Jug, I have to exercise some control regrading my stash. I have 2- 109's, 2- IJA fighters, 2- 190's, a Mig-17, a Sabre Jet all in 1/48 scale as well as 2 1/350 scale warships. Added to that, I just got an e-mail saying that my 1/48 scale B-29 by Revell has begun it's long journey from Arizona to Australia.
That's probably over two years building there.
I've got to curb my habit of trolling E-bay and finding bargains I can't let pass.
Best Wishes,
Gary

Gary,
I've fought the Battle of the Stash for years on end. For the last several years we've come to an agreement that the max number of models is 12, which shortly was modified to a Bakers Dozen (13). Currently, my stash is at 12. With that being said, I average 3 maybe 4 builds a year, and I've already got my eye on the 1/32 scale Kingfisher, the 1/48 scale Grumman F2F-1, and the year isn't even over yet.
What's more I bought not 1, not 2, but 3 Iwata airbrushes (sold the Eclipse), and now I've just ordered the Iwata Pro Jet compressor for $467 as it's whisper quiet along with it's other features. So while the stash is under control for the time being, my modeling fund still has taken a major hit.

While I got a book full of Thunderbolts on Monday, the guys from the other side of the front surprised me today after returning from work ....
Another fine edition of great and previously unreleased photos of all kinds of Luftwaffe aircrafts. I have suscribed these books since years so I don't have to worry getting them. And they are worth every cent.
Now I have enough to read for at least a week ....
Torsten
PS: While I look at that delicious front cover I feel the need to build some Fw 190 right now ....

Well the postman didn't drop this off but I did manage to pick it up at the LHS when I stopped by for a paint run. This is the new Revell 2015 boxing even though it still has the Monogram logo. The LHS had just gotten it delivered, it wasn't even in their computer system yet but they were happy to sell it to me when I saw it setting behind the counter.
This latest boxing comes with decals for Enola Gay and Bockscar again, along with a 6th BG bird named "El Pajaro de la Guerra" (the War Bird) which sports a black underside camo scheme for the low level fire bombing missions. The decals appear to be of nice quality, so I don't plan to look for aftermarket replacements.
Everything is molded in grey plastic, and the kit includes both types of propellers. It also has a 4 page booklet to help you create a diorama of Enola Gay at North Field in August of 1945, pre-Hiroshima mission. I have to assume this is a reprint of the old Shep Paine bonus inserts Monogram was famous for with their bomber kits.

Paul,
I'm quite certain that you'll do the kit more then justice with your building skills. At this point are you thinking of sanding off the raised panel lines and rescribing, or working with them as is?
And just out of curiosity, where and how do you plan on displaying this monster size model? Display space has been the only reason that I've yet to build my 1/48 scale PBY-5A.

Good question Joel.
I am debating trying to mount it to the wall (resting on the gear, nose pointed down) using an acrylic rod; I have seen some wall dispays made this way and they make an impression. I have some corner shelves in my computer room / office I set up to display the Monogram B-17 and B-24 when I build them, so it will probably go in there. Not on a shelf though, it's just too damn big. My wife suggested I hang it from the ceiling in the same room, in the corner over the shelves. Honestly though, I am just not sure yet. All three bombers are projects I will have to really dedicate myself to, and right now I have about a dozen fighters or strike aircraft I want to build / finish first.
Eventually, I am going to build her as Enola Gay and likely drop some money into Eduard's external details and the A-bomb set. I was thinking having the plane mounted on the wall and placing a detailed Little Boy bomb next to her would make a good display. I don't see myself investing a great deal of effort into detailing the interior.

Paul,
I was thinking along the same lines for my PBY. I thought about mounting it to a base with a Arial map of the pacific with Midway Island as the center. Then having it mounted on a few acrylic rods. That's the easy part. Trying to figure out how to cover it with a clear professionally made acrylic cover is another issue altogether. Hence, the model has been in my stash for a few years now.
Hanging models are more prone to being dust collectors then those on a display shelf.

Hi Paul,
I have a 1/48 B-29 on my way via E-bay, and like you, I am contemplating mounting it on the wall. I envisage building my own base and deep frame with a sheet of clear acrylic to keep the dust out. My biggest concern is the weight that the landing gear, wheels, and landing gear mounting points will have to bear. I have almost convinced myself to replace the main gear with modified brass bolts that will continue down between the wheels and into the base so it can be bolted down. I hate to trust all of that styrene to anything but the strongest of supports.
...I get modellers insomnia...I make the mistake of thinking about a build while I should empty my mind and get back to sleep... However, I do find the best fixes occur to me around 2:30 am.

Gary,
I certainly agree with your concerns about a large kits landing gear not being able to bear the weight vertically over a long period of time. Normally, the load is straight down so that there is no horizontal loading. Hanging the model on a wall creates a load situation that the kit parts were never designed to carry. Failure is 100% guaranteed over a relatively short period of time. That's why I will use either acrylic rod or more likely a series of bras rods and tubes.
Since the viewer will only see the back of the aircraft, there really isn't any need to use the landing gear, so your idea of modified nuts and bolts seems like a very interesting and doable method over the way I'm leaning on going.

Hi Joel,
I will make a broad flat spar of layers of brass sheet soldered together. Then I'll solder on a brass nut that the new gear will be screwed and soldered into. After supergluing the spar into the wing, I will criss cross it with a web of stretched sprue to back up the superglue joint. For the forward gear, I will also do something to keep the plane from rocking while being moved, but I'm not sure what yet. I have no idea what to expect until I find the kit before me. I've already researched the machine I want to build. There aren't a lot of decal sets out there, and I like to build something different from everyone else. I'm wondering just how far the tip of the tail is from the ground. I reckon my picture frame will be every bit as big as the cabinet I just built.

I was recommended this bird for my first foray into WWI aircraft models and rigging:
It arrived today along with a circle cutter.
Cheers!

Gary.
Good luck with your 1st WW1 build. About the only thing I know about kits of that era is that 1/32 scale kits seem to be more in vogue. I'll be following right along with your build blog.
I'm amazed that you guys get so much modeling stuff in the mail. All I ever seem to get is bills, and more bills

Hey Joel,
Thanks! As much as I'd like large scale, 1/48 just seems to work for my lack of display space, and my temperament.
To get kits in the mail, you gotta order em, mate. In this case, I needed a tool, and ended up surfing the site for a bargain to save on future postage. I've also bought kits off EBAY with no problems so far. *knock on wood*
