Hi Justin, you are correct, those photos you posted through the link you provided, are really great! My dad remembered seeing the P-61's on Iwo Jima when he was there as Marine infantry. He told me about them growing up and it was one of the distinctive aircraft that I learned early on. Thanks for posting. Russell

Justin, have been busy researching and collecting detailing information as I'm planning on pushing my envelope one step further on my P-61 build then I did on my SBD-4 build. I'm great at planning, but execution is a whole different ballgame.

Will be starting little by little after the main painting sessions on my TBD-1 build.

So is there a start date? I'm on the back end of my current build and have been toying with dragging out the old Revelogram kit. I built one in school for a contest when I was in the 7th grade, I'm sure I could do a better job today.

hkshooter, this is a fun, informal Buddy/GB where list members can join in anytime, to build any P-61 of their choice, in any scale. Start whenever you want. The thread will stay active as long as someone is still building.

Ask questions, help others, post your build progress, start a Build blog, just enjoy your build, and the friendship of the list members.

As for Justin & myself, we came up with this concept so that we could help and bounce build ideas off of each other. Ok, actually, I'll be doing more of the bouncing off of then Justin, (just check out his SR-71 build, the detailing is incredible).

I am proving that Barnum was a pessimist. First, I stopped by the LHS and picked up an OLD Airfix 1/72 kit. Now I have re-entered the world of EvilBay to bid on a set of decals.

Wow, I don't recall too much fuss when I sent you some drop tanks a few years back. Course I claimed that they had no economic value, that can change the paperwork exponentially.

I'll be completing my current project shortly. Once done I'll pull out the old kit and decide if I'm ready for that butt whoopin again.

So, any rules, obligations or other items we need to follow? Is there a specific start and or stop date? Just post pics during?

@Terri, Hi Girl, long time no see.
et. al. Glad to be part of this GB. Nice to be part of a build without time limits.
I am surprised that most people are doing PTO planes again. I had the honor to meet Col John Morgan USAF (ret.) who, as a young Lt., piloted a P-61B named Doubtful Doris. Thru his Grandson I built a model of Doris using the Monogram kit. It was a long 5 months.
Unfortunately, the computer that I had my research and build log bit the dust and I lost everything. Anyway, this is Doubtful Doris in Italy 1944

Sorry it's small, but this is what I found on the net.
This the artwork, Varga Girl, of course.

If I dug a wee bit more on the net, I'm sure I could find better images. My point being, that as great as the PTO Black Widows were, there are so many others.

For instance, when doing research for NAS Vero Beach my club found that at least 4 P-61's where assigned to the Nightfighter training base.
So, this is my next Black Widow project.

P-61B Black Widow Naval Air Station Vero Beach, Florida 1944.

Honestly, I haven't even given any thought to what paint scheme and or markings I'm going to eventually do. Right now as I'm working on my TBD-1 build, I'm planning out the detailing & finessing that I want to work on.

The GWH P-61 is really an amazing kit straight from the box, and can be fairly easily be taken to a higher level without any AM parts. Just sheet, rod, and strip plastic, along with some solid reference material.

The reality of it is that my build should take a min of a good 6-9 months or more of work. Hopefully I'll be able to start the Grumman campaign in a timely manner, but I'm not counting on it. After all, it was my brain child, and a campaign I've been really looking forward to.

I really don't like to shelve one project to start another, so I don't have any closet or shelf Queens. I'm terrible at advance planning, so I always end up way behind the start dates of campaigns.

Good thing I'm finally going to semi retire from work at the end of Nov. For me that's 4 days/32 hours. Of course I'm sure that my lovely wife will have other plans for my extra home time. And work has already been hinting that I postpone my semi retirement to cover vacations, and the holiday season.
