Tim, Look'in good. Actually, it's looking outstanding. Keep those pictures coming.

Can't wait to start mine. Finished the base painting of the TBD-1, so I'm within two weeks of actually starting.

Tim, I feel a lot better knowing that you're building the HB offering. The PE for the wing intakes is simply amazing. Are you also doing the GWH 1/48 kit like so many of us? Pete will also be building the 1/32 HB kit at some point.

Don't get me wrong, I love 1/72 scale, why I'll bet 72% of my stash is one seventytooth. Now I have branched out lately, in the last month I've gotten two AFV's and a truck, all in 1/72. I even have a 1/72 boat in the stash.

No, my discouragement stems from the kit I chose. The crew sits on Barcaloungers, the control column would be more comfortable in a city bus. The pilot is sitting with his hands in his lap. That's got the gunners so frightened, they're praying, what else could they be doing with both hands clutched just in front of their mouths. Futbol sized rivets EVERYWHERE. The only places missing raised detail are the crew compartments and the wheel wells.

I'm familiar with this kit, having just finished one for "Devils in the Dark". That sample didn't have any undercarriage nor any stores. I built it gear up and fudged the stores with a little help from Aeroscale pals. This one has the undercarriage and those parts are excellent, even has intricately molded brake lines. I'd hoped to dress it up with a crew ladder, better decals (including an instrument panel), maybe clean up the Barcaloungers with real arm rests. Leave off the top turret and do an OD over gray scheme, last one had the turret and was glossy black.

Now, I've really got to step it up and clutter the office with boxes and panels and add detail to the wells...

Mark, I haven't built a 1/72 scale kit in more the 30 years, but from what I remember, the models themselves were so small that rivets, and panel lines other then the separation of flying surfaces, shouldn't even been seen. The scale represents viewing the aircraft from 72 feet away. Walk the off that distance from a car, and look at it. You'd be hard pressed to even see the door separation lines.

I'd sand off all those rivets and raised panel lines. then add some panels checking references with a lighter or darker shade of OD.

I sanded down a lot of rivets last time.

I even went thru and committed surgery on the gunners to give them separate hands to grasp the gun controls.

I've been doing 1/72 aircraft for centuries. From back in the days when there were more choices in 1/72 than any other scale. Now my choices are limited by limited space for building and display. I really don't have room for a 1/72 B-17, no telling how I could handle a 1/32 version.

One wise man pointed out that the only difference between large scales and small scales were the size of the smallest detail parts you could add. You weren't freed from small parts, quite the contrary, you ended up with more small parts.

Thanks.
It's the Airfix kit.

I guess I shouldn't complaint too loudly. Between the two kits I'm out about half the price of the DML 1/72 offering..

Mark, your P-61 looks darn good to me. Love the gloss finish.

well the 2 I am doing, neither had tanks. Lt. Morgan's "Doubtful Doris" carried bombs, and "#37" was used as a trainer and didn't carry drop tanks

Later

ps I couldn't decide which one to do so...

Jess, looks like a fun build. Of course there is no way to tell the fit of the parts yet, and I'm sure that there are a few surprises just waiting for you to make your day.
