I started building the Airfix 1/24 scale Hawker Typhoon yesterday afternoon. No other kit has ever called to me to make a start like this has. I am going to build this in flight, I wouldn't normally do this but I want it on display on my trade stand at the Scale Modelworld show in early November. If I were to build it on its wheels, with the engine on display I doubt that I would get it finished. This model has all the detail that you could possibly want
As soon as you start to build this you get a feeling of the size of it! The cockpit framework and engine mount frame go together quickly, very quickly and I had to stop and consider paint I could have shown this virtually without any cement holding it together, such is the accuracy of the mating of the parts
As I will be building this in flight I have the pilot on the go as well, he needs to be added early on. I forgot to photograph him though, so he will be in the next update.

The more pictures I see and the more praise I hear about the kit, the weaker my resistance gets. I think I should just realise that all efforts to avoid this kit are futile and save some money instead.
Since you have a head start on the rest of us, this will be a build to follow closely. Spoil us with pictures, please!

I'm following your build here Mal, looking forward to every update. This kit is at the top of my list to add to the stash right now, the only thing that would knock it off would be a 1/24 Razorback P-47, just in case any manufacturers are listening in !

For further inspiration, pick up the latest issue of Airfix Model World (June) as there is a separate supplement devoted entirely to the Typhoon including an excellent build article on the 1/24 Airfix kit.

Mal,
You know that I'll be following your build with great interest. The detail of the cockpit and main wing spars is just at a level one never sees in a stock kit. Having seen the engine, it's a shame that you won't be displaying it, but a massive inflight display should be eye catching for sure.

Yes that is the idea, I'm hoping to get some paint on this afternoon

:) I placed this assembly on the centre fuselage and lower wing part, then held on of the upper wings in place, they fit perfectly and I exclaimed to myself, "bloody hell, its big"! The construction is unconventional but works very, very well

Yep built and written by Steve Bud, the guy who sent me the kit and who I am doing the shark mouth masks for and I mention this in my review, do get it it is well worth it

Welcome along Joel, I don't think that I will have any trouble adding regular updates Yes the detail is stunning and the way that it all fits together, much like the real thing is also equally well done. Like I keep saying, this kit is the bar to which all others producing large scale kits must now aim for. I am hoping that their next kit will be the Spitfire Mk1, to this standard

I think you should STOP this build NOW, in deference to those of us who are waiting impatiently for 6th June or whenever the release dates going to be.
Only joking, it's looking pretty impressive so far, looking forward to seeing more.

Hi John,
LOL, I understand I have been delayed in moving on, but I have painted this frame; I am just getting the interior parts to be painted black together so I ca get them painted. I am working on another review (on new paints) so I need to get them tried out and to that end I am also trying to get the interiors of 2 other models ready for paint. The framing has been painted with the new paint and it is looking good. I will update this over the week end

Hi Mal:
That first fit of the key structural components onto the lower wing section is an eye opener, isn't it - near perfect, even without glue.
I'm smiling here as your reactions are a mirror of how I felt, looking at it on the lower wing and thinking what a hefty lump it was turning into. That impression goes up several gears when you fit the outer lower wing sections...
It's going to be a massive draw at Scale Model World, on a stand with the prop spinning - I'll be posting some video of that on my Facebook account.
Glad you're enjoying it and that the 'reserve aircraft' has found the right home'.
Looking forward to the next batch of pics.
Best regards
Steve

Thanks Chuck I would like to see what you might do with this kit. From the box (not that I have a box!) this will build into what the average modeller would call super detailed

Yes, when I saw your pics of this my jaw dropped and when I read how it was basically a perfect fit I knew that this was something special. Seeing it and test fitting the lower wing and upper wing was a joy in itself
Yes I am really looking forward to getting the wings an fuselage together; I need to make a concerted effort to get the interior black painted bits together and painted (I'm being kept from doing it by "selfish" customers and the painting of the house!)
I had better make sure that I finish it then
I am going to the Torquay show next week end and I am contemplating taking some parts of this along; although I am worried about losing any parts! It would be nice to introduce modellers to this kit in person though

Hi Mal
It takes some nerve having such a stupendous kit and not plunge straight at it, so I share your pain
Now what ac will you depict with your masks??
Hope you'll pose it in shallow dive ready to destroy some armour
Keep it rolling please
Cheers

Hi Pedro,
I actually have many kits that I wanted to dive straight into but haven't; partly because my modelling mojo had disappeared and partly because they were complicated. I also didn't feel that I could do them justice. However this one just seemed different, as though I couldn't possibly do it an injustice, even though it is complicated, the instructions, fit and and detail make for a trouble free build that will provide excellent results without the need for any budging of the fit
I haven't decided on what markings I will depict yet; It will have invasion stripes and I would like to show off with what markings are possible. That precludes the shark mouth option, although showing off the masks it was seen late war so no stripes. I quite like the idea of 245 Sqn with the blue and white checks on the tail and blue spinner. I need to do more research, but any neat suggestions are welcome, but no Canadian Sqn aircraft, as this will be firing rockets and I'm informed that no Canadian Sqns ever carried rockets.
Yes it will be in a shallow dive, launching a salvo of rockets to take out a bunch of targets. That is assuming that I can come up with a viable method of depicting this without it looking like a cotton wool ball I do have a plan though

Hi Lucky,
Thanks you will get to see some of it at Torquay
I didn't know that Airfix had a survey going, I'm off there next If they do do a jet then the Hunter would be a very good choice What about a Vulcan! I like your choices, but I really think that they should do a Spitfire MkI, to honour the Battle of Britain heroes. There's not many still around and how cool would it be to be able to have those that are at the launch I've already planned the markings for that
I have failed so for to do what I had planned this week end, apart from getting some paint on the framing, as I have been blasting the paint off the gable end of the bungalow and its proving to be a long laborious job. We are finally getting paint on the outside over 2 years after moving in! I will at least get most of the interior items to be painted black off the spruse and ready for paint. I haven't been totally idle with this and I have solved the one issue that Steve Batt found, more on that in the next update, soon

Mal,
Your modeling Mojo has disappeared once again? :-(. Maybe it's from trying to do to much all at once with multiple, complicated builds in 1/24-1/32 scales. I often find that when I set goals that push my limits too far, I tend to look for excuses, reasons, etc. as to why I should do something non-modeling related instead.

Errrr, No I was answering pedro and said "had disappeared" please re-read what I actually wrote? If anything this kit has helped me re-find my modelling mojo, I have actually deliberately not done any work on paint masks to be able to put time in on the modelling bench. That and having to paint the bungalow has proved to be a bad move as I now must spend time getting masks sets drawn. I am actually thinking about ditching paint masks so that I can get on with modelling; but my reason for modelling is to show what paint masks can achieve I may just have to give up the commission work!
I have started to get the sub assemblies that are painted black together but yesterday I got up at about 4.30am and I was just to tired to do much of anything! I often wake up quite early, but after a few days of 5-6am starts 4.30 was just too early. Although I woke up with the Tiffy on my mind I got little done. I will try and do better today

Mal,
Sorry that I miss read what you wrote. The good news is that your Mojo is in full operational mode.
Most days I'm up well before 5am. And that goes for days that I work from 10pm to 7am in the morning. Now those are long days. :-) Got into the habit of being an early riser from all the years I fished. Now I can't sleep late even when I have the opportunity to do so.

LOL, no problem Joel, I didn't like the idea that it may have appeared that I was in and out of my mojo as though I was a schizophrenic! Having seemed to have found it I'm feeling quite jealous of losing it
I also do get a little irritated when posters clearly haven't read previous posts or haven't properly read the post that they are replying to. That is partly why I haven't replied to some threads on Aeroscale; I will read every post before replying. So if it is something that I have no opinion on or someone has posted with the same opinion as me or, God forbid! I find it boring, or rambling, or just going off topic and if they have guite verbose content I won't read every post and therefor I won't reply. Often I read the content over several visits but if the post slips off the front page I will probably not get back to it until it "re-appears". I just don't have the time anymore because I am retired
I too tend to wake early and if I don't get back to sleep within 20 minutes I get up. Sometimes, like the other day, that is a bad move and I feel the effects of sleep deprivation zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I have been getting on but I am taking my time so I haven't got as far as I hoped by now, so no black paint on the interior parts. I do however intend to post pictures of where I am at later

To get paid for outgoing orders I have to get them out. When I got back home after a week end at my daughters there was a call on the answer phone that will make getting commission orders out a bit more difficult because I will need to concentrate on something else for a while! It is something that I have been working towards for a few years now and it looks like it is set to happen I will try and get an update done for this but today and tomorrow I have some serious redesign work to do, and its not a design for masks I think that it is now the right time to get a proper web site up and running So that is going to take quite a bit of time!
