Such great builds everyone.

I unfortunately am no where near completing my Sunderland so I wont be making the deadline. I'll just move her over to the Hanger Queens I suppose!

A small update:
I've slowly but surely been making progress. There are an awful lot of tiny decals. All of which seem to silver. The bigger ones too unfortunately. Never really had it happen to me in these large amount. Not sure what causes it. I prepared the surface with Citadel Purity Seal satin varnish like i always do, prepare with Microset, appy and cover with Micosol several times. It'll have to do as it is i'm afraid.

There are some learning issue for the next one: make sure the masking tape is really taped well/closed up. The primer has creeped under the tape in some places. And next time i'll try masking the canopies and mask them before installing them. Now i have painted the metal parts afterwards which doesn't look as good

It looks decent enough in the photographs and when viewing from a distance. When getting close in you'll start to see the mistakes. Perhaps this is one to hang from the ceiling once it's done





Next week i'll seal the wings with varnish and join the 2 parts. Then it's time to cover up the joints. I'll also need to re-attach the broken off bits. And then it's time for some weathering and see how it looks

I'm not exactly thrilled by how she turned out, but i'm not unhappy either... Well, actually i'm pretty happy

I did learn a lot during this build. There were a few setbacks and i wasn't happy when they happened. But in retrospect i did have fun with this kit. And i'm happy i finally have a Dornier Do 24 flying boat finished

Like in the old times when i was a little kid i'll hang her from the ceiling

I think I know what You mean. But I still do test flights with my finished kits in the house, making annoying engine sounds with my mouth .

I'm enrolled in a few other campaigns at the moment Jonathan, so that's a "yes"

(F.Y.I. - Just throwing this out there:)

Right now doing my first plane since high school (I am now 69) The 1/35th scale Hobby Boss Storch Fi-156A/C to go along with all my many military vehicles! I'm using the same paint scheme as Goof's Dornier so having to mask the assorted colors is proving both challenging and fun.

You guys inspired me to branch out!

p.s. Been hankering to do a PBY in the largest scale I can find for quite some time. That might be next on the list!

If I might ask a question of you guys with all the experience with the "wingy thingies"?

As I say, your work has me now building the 1/35th scale Storch from HobbyBoss.

Regarding the two color top camo: the lack of color contrast between the Tamiya Luftwaffe Dark Green (AS-24) and the Luftwaffe Gray Green (AS-3) would seen to make the camo efforts almost unnoticeable and as far as the real aircraft goes totally unaffective.

Do I have these colors right?

I am just starting to lay the gray over the green so now is the time to change if I have something wrong.

The Germans were the kings (Koenig) of camouflage so a higher contrast lite green would seem to be in order. - - HELP!



p.s. I admit the two color top camo on the Dornier Flying Boat shown above does not seem to have much contrast either so maybe I have things right after all ???

No idea really... I see much more contrast in other built planes online. But it's color settings on the monitor, camera settings, lighting etc. that play into that as well. And i feel it's more up to personal taste as well. Same with the modulation and highlighting effects on models. People use higher contrast, lighter colors (sometimes even white), mostly because they think it looks better



I just used the RLM27 and RLM 73 colors used for seaplanes and trust Vallejo Air got it sort of right. I see much more contrast in some pictures and less in others. There is contrast in the real thing as well, but not a lot and definitely not when the sun isn't shining. On the next one i'll use Tamiya paint and use much lighter colors for the top of the wings with higher contrast. Not because it's right or i know it's that way from real life experience, but just because i think it looks better

Outside of my area of knowledge, deserves a thread of its own, there are guys here who are deep into luftwaffe colors and you could get alot of input.

I have moderately good contrast separation between the two camo colors until I put on a clear matte overspray. Then the two colors practically disappear into each other!

I can't stand it - I am going to do a complete repaint then mask it again and use a different color - even if it is the wrong color!

Since this is more or less my first aircraft in years I am just going to have to chalk it up to a learning experience anyway. I wanted to take some liberties with the yellow markings anyway so now I can feel free to do whatever my artist license may dictate.

I always do. I hate being constrained by arguable beliefs of "correctness"

Ok, now I am going with Tamiya RAF Dark Green as the second camo color. At least I can see a definite color change between the two shades. In either case I don't give any points to the Germans for this particular color combination. You need a good degree of color contrast when using a two color camo pattern in order to break up the silhouette of a hard edged vehicle.
